Book excerpt: This book explains and illustrates the actual materials and techniques adopted (both successfully and unsuccessfully) by tactical units – i.e. the concealment of personnel, weapons, equipment, field positions, and movement by infantry riflemen and weapons crews, artillerymen, and vehicle crews. It covers all areas and seasons in the European and Mediterranean theaters of operations, for the US, British, German, and Soviet armies. It includes camouflage of the person, personal equipment, and weapons; natural materials and “expedient” techniques; issued camouflage materials such as nets, ponchos, etc; the principles of camouflaging equipment and vehicles, of positioning and terrain integration, the effects of light and shadow, and the use of decoy and dummy positions. Featuring meticulous full-color artwork and specially selected period photographs, this absorbing study casts new light on the camouflaging techniques developed by the major armies of World War II on a host of European battlefields.

This book was released on 1946 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "During most of World War II the subjects of camouflage, concealment (defined here as underground construction), and deception (the use of decoys and dummies), were not special fields of photographic interpretation. Instead they were treated in a routine manner as they occurred in relation to standard subjects of reporting, i.e., airfields, shipping, industry, etc., and were not considered particularly troublesome or significant. However, when the aerial bombardment of Japan forced the Japanese to disperse vital military and industrial facilities, the detection of efforts toward camouflage and concealment suddenly became important. The war ended before Japanese attempts to hide essential targets assumed any great operational significance, but the threat implied to the effectiveness of photographic interpretation caused much speculation on the future usefulness of photographs as an intelligence source. In order to answer the questions thus raised photographic interpreters attached to the United States Strategic Bombing Survey studied Japanese camouflage, concealment, and deception in the field. Due to the lack of any special reporting procedure for this type of interpretation, very little published photographic intelligence material was available for checking, and consequently the following evaluation is largely qualitative in nature. All considerations of Japanese methods in this report are made strictly on the basis of their effectiveness in confusing the photographic interpreter. Some techniques of camouflage, concealment, and deception which did not greatly confuse the interpreters may have been effective in confusing an attacking pilot or bombardier"--Page 1

Book excerpt: How does one engage in the study of strategy? Strategy: Context and Adaptation from Archidamus to Airpower argues that strategy is not just concerned with amassing knowledge; it is also about recognizing our imperfect understanding of the environment and respecting the complex nature of adaptation to the unforeseen or unexpected. In essence, the strongest strategists are those who commit to an education that cultivates a more holistic and adaptive way of thinking. With that thought in mind, the contributors to Strategy, each a current or former professor at the School of Advanced Air and Space Studies, widely considered the Department of Defense’s premier school of strategy, offer ways of thinking strategically about a variety of subject matters, from classical history to cyber power. Practitioners in the profession of arms, perhaps more than any other profession, must employ critical thinking where the application of power on land, at sea, in the air, and in space and cyberspace are concerned. Strategy examines various sub-disciplines regarding the use of power, and illuminates different approaches to thinking which have implications beyond the implementation of force.
