Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the best strategy books of 2021 by strategy+business Get to better, more effective strategy. In nearly every business segment and corner of the world economy, the most successful companies dramatically outperform their rivals. What is their secret? In Better, Simpler Strategy, Harvard Business School professor Felix Oberholzer-Gee shows how these companies achieve more by doing less. At a time when rapid technological change and global competition conspire to upend traditional ways of doing business, these companies pursue radically simplified strategies. At a time when many managers struggle not to drown in vast seas of projects and initiatives, these businesses follow simple rules that help them select the few ideas that truly make a difference. Better, Simpler Strategy provides readers with a simple tool, the value stick, which every organization can use to make its strategy more effective and easier to execute. Based on proven financial mechanics, the value stick helps executives decide where to focus their attention and how to deepen the competitive advantage of their business. How does the value stick work? It provides a way of measuring the two fundamental forces that lead to value creation and increased financial success—the customer's willingness-to-pay and the employee's willingness-to-sell their services to the business. Companies that win, Oberholzer-Gee shows, create value for customers by raising their willingness-to-pay, and they provide value for talent by lowering their willingness-to-sell. The approach, proven in practice, is entirely data driven and uniquely suited to be cascaded throughout the organization. With many useful visuals and examples across industries and geographies, Better, Simpler Strategy explains how these two key measures enable firms to gauge and improve their strategies and operations. Based on the author's sought-after strategy course, this book is your must-have guide for making better strategic decisions.

Book excerpt: How smart companies are opening up strategic initiatives to involve front-line employees, experts, suppliers, customers, entrepreneurs, and even competitors. Why are some of the world’s most successful companies able to stay ahead of disruption, adopting and implementing innovative strategies, while others struggle? It’s not because they hire a new CEO or expensive consultants but rather because these pioneering companies have adopted a new way of strategizing. Instead of keeping strategic deliberations within the C-Suite, they open up strategic initiatives to a diverse group of stakeholders—front-line employees, experts, suppliers, customers, entrepreneurs, and even competitors. Open Strategy presents a new philosophy, key tools, step-by-step advice, and fascinating case studies—from companies that range from Barclays to Adidas—to guide business leaders in this groundbreaking approach to strategy. The authors—business-strategy experts from both academia and management consulting—introduce tools for each of the three stages of strategy-making: idea generation, plan formulation, and implementation. These are digital tools (including strategy contests), which allow the widest participation; hybrid digital/in-person tools (including a “nightmare competitor challenge”); a workshop tool that gamifies the business model development process; and tools that help companies implement and sustain open strategy efforts. Open strategy has an astonishing track record: a survey of 200 business leaders shows that although open-strategy techniques were deployed for only 30 percent of their initiatives, those same initiatives generated 50 percent of their revenues and profits. This book offers a roadmap for this kind of success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crises, in the past, have been cyclical events in economic history. However, we are currently experiencing an acceleration of these cycles with shorter time span in-between major events. In a period of 20 years, from 2001 to 2021, we have lived three global major crisis events: The Twin Tower Attack on September 11th, 2001, the Financial Crash in 2008, and the Covid-19 pandemic from 2020. In the first edition of this book, the authors explained the main decision-making patterns of behavior (i.e. short termism, centralization, and parochialism) that characterized the management processes of Boards of Directors during the financial crash. Now, in this revised and updated second edition, the authors explore the main commonalities and differences between decision making at the top during the previous financial crisis and during the most recent Covid 19 global pandemic, as well as during the inception of the war in Ukraine. In doing so they ask, is this a new crisis or just the “new normal” that businesses and organizations need to face after major catastrophic events? By first reassessing the very meaning of the word ‘crisis,’ the authors explore the relationship between frequent crises, emergency cabinets and socially widespread fear as determinants of a “new normal” rather than as the extraordinary state of our societies. In this sense, the authors identify more nuanced and updated consequences of short termism, centralization and parochialism that could shape the changes after the current crisis and the approach to next crisis to come

Book excerpt: Work-life balance isn’t about where or how you spend your time. At least not solely. It’s about where and how you use and replenish your energy. Work matters. Life matters. Work-life matters. As we start to navigate life during and after the pandemic, employers and employees are increasingly re-evaluating how work can be made more sustainable and more fulfilling. Many employees - particularly Gen X and Gen Z - are seeking a new psychological contract with their employers. Putting these trends into context and offering practical solutions, this book takes a deep dive into why work matters as part of a healthy and fulfilling life. The authors present a new and different way of thinking about the matter of balance, arguing that there is no hard divide between ‘work’ and life’ because ‘work’ takes place entirely within ‘life’ and you can’t balance two things when one is a subset of the other. To achieve the balance required for a healthy existence, we need to recognise that there are activities in all parts of work-life that drain our energy and others that give us a buzz. Rather than trying to solve the drain of hard work by living it large at the weekend – or compensating for an unfulfilling home life by working like a demon, we need to create balance at work and balance at home. Now is a golden opportunity to re-examine the world of work and job-craft to make them more satisfying, less draining and more energising. The ideas in this book provide a practical guide to help that process.

Book excerpt: This book acts as a valuable quick-access resource on the challenges and opportunities that the digital age presents to organizational leadership. Balanced, comprehensive, and thought-provoking, the book will be useful to professionals and practitioners. The book broadly follows a macro, meso, and micro approach to argumentation and is best read from beginning to end. The book synopsizes the historical context of technological revolutions and reflects on first-order results from enhanced use of information and communication technology in organizations; considers second-level impacts from information and communication technology on economy, society, work, and the very act of organizing; maps out core concepts of agility and principles that leaders should honor to exploit agility in newfound workforce ecosystems; showcases emerging leadership behaviors and mindsets; and specifies the good practice needed to plan and lead digital strategies. The book invites reference to the author's popular Knowledge Solutions: Tools, Methods, and Approaches to Drive Organizational Performance (2017) and the more recent Leading Solutions: Essays in Business Psychology (2021), which it both rests on and extends. Olivier Serrat researches the field of organizational leadership at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. He spearheaded knowledge management at the Asian Development Bank from 2008-2012 and for two consecutive years-2011 and 2012-earned ADB an Asian Most Admired Knowledge Enterprises award. He is the author of Leading Solutions: Essays in Business Psychology (2021), Knowledge Solutions: Tools, Methods, and Approaches to Drive Organizational Performance (2017), and Learning in Development (2010). Olivier produced Guidelines for Knowledge Partnerships (2011) and ADB: Reflections and Beyond (2010). He has written hundreds of articles and developed multiple initiatives to energize organization, people, knowledge, and technology for learning. In consideration of the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of general conditions and situations in the twenty-first century, Olivier sees that we must-beyond preoccupation with leadership styles-learn to lead in new ways of organizing. At the intersection of complexity leadership, metagovernance, and sensemaking, Olivier investigates how to lead organizations of the future.

Book excerpt: This book explores how cosmetics firms have made the transition to technology-enabled beauty companies to meet changing customer demands. For this purpose, the contexts of cosmetics industry growth and digital marketing strategy in the post-pandemic world are presented here. The digital marketing strategies of Japanese and Korean firms are shown, along with new business models and future prospects in cosmetics industries. In the post-pandemic world, the growing middle class will set priorities for beauty–hygienic goals, nutritional choices, and healthcare development needs. The growth rates of Asian economies were slowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet their growth opportunities were not constrained. Diverse industries—the cosmetics industry in particular—have addressed the needs of these growing segments in Asia. In keeping up with the leading business trends, cosmetics firms also have leveraged big data and built their brand partnerships across industries, applying the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence for their product and process development. The vast amounts of big data gathered through IoT devices are now being used to improve entire value chain operations, creating a digital thread through the global value chain. These data are increasingly used to create new services and develop a business model for global firms. As of 2021, four of the top ten global cosmetics firms are from the USA (Estée Lauder, Proctor & Gamble, Coty, and Johnson & Johnson), three are from Europe (L’Oréal, Unilever, and Beiersdorf), two from Japan (Shiseido and Kao), and one from Korea (Amore Pacific). The USA and European firms still maintain their competitive advantage in the cosmetics industry. Global cosmetics market share by region shows that North Asia is the largest (35%), followed by North America (26%) and Latin America (7%), Europe (22%), and Africa and other regions (10%). With the rapid increase of the middle class in the Asia region, more sales are expected there than anywhere else. In this dynamic market environment, a real challenge for the cosmetics industry is how to develop and put into practice its own unique business model.
