Analytical work on the problem to date has dealt mainly with isolated voids in perfectly plastic materials, so that strain hardening and interactions between neighboring voids have been neglected. These features of void growth are examined here, but only for a simple geometrical configuration. In particular, the growth of single infinitely long cylindrical voids in bodies of rigid-plastic, strain-hardening material is considered. Bodies with both finite and infinite dimensions normal to the void surface are included in the analysis. The exact relation among the pertinent variables: transverse stress, axial strain, hardening coefficient, void strain and void growth rate is presented. Solution via a bounding technique is given for two general cases. The first case is that of an imposed constant void growth rate and the second case is an imposed constant transverse stress. The results show a decelerating effect of hardening on void growth. Application to the ductile fracture problem of void growth in the neck of a tensile specimen demonstrates the accelerating effect of void growth due to interactions between voids. (Author).

The mechanical behavior of materials undergoing strain path changes can be very different from those deformed in a given direction to fracture. The work presented here employed laser drilled model materials to better understand the effect of pre-strains and strain path changes on void growth and linkage leading to fracture is studied. The experimental results show that increasing pre-strain results in faster void growth which was justified in terms work hardening rate in the sample. Scanning electron microscope images revealed that the ductility of the sample decreased with increasing pre-strain but only slightly compared to the large decrease in far field strain at failure. This suggests that pre-strain affects strain localization significantly and to a lesser extent the ductility. Finally a finite element model has been built to predict the linkage between voids.

Pores or voids are physically modeled in two dimensions by both random and regular arrays of equi-sized holes drilled through the thickness of tensile specimens of 1100-0 Al sheet and 7075-T6 Al plate and sheet. Fracture strains as well as failure paths have been determined for different hole sizes, spacings, and area fractions. A statistical analysis of the data indicates that increasing the minimum hole spacing, which decreases the degree of hole clustering, increases both strength and ductility. Conversely, decreasing the hole size causes a minor increase in both strength and ductility. Increasing the rate of work hardening is beneficial to ductility in that a high strain hardening rate appears to increase the resistance to flow localization between holes. The results are discussed in terms of a fracture process which depends on shear localization between holes/voids and which is very sensitive to void/pore distributions. The effects of void growth and interaction and specimen necking on material failure have been investigated for a single material cell, with a discrete cluster of four voids, where geometrical parameters have been varied to result in seven unique periodic and random void arrangements. The interrelated effects of void distribution and geometry, strain hardening, geometrical softening, localized plastic strains and slip-rates, and hydrostatic stresses on failure paths and ligament damage in face centered cubic (f.c.c.) crystalline materials have been studied. Results from this study are consistent with experimental observations that ductile failure can occur either due to void growth parallel to the stress axis, which results in void coalescence normal to the stress axis, or void interaction along bands, which are characterized by intense shear-strain localization and that intersect the free surface at regions of extensive specimen necking.
