Book excerpt: In October 2009, more than 50 of the world's leading negotiation scholars gathered in Istanbul, Turkey for the second in a series of three international conferences designed to critically examine what is taught in contemporary negotiation courses and how we teach them, with special emphasis on how best to "translate" teaching methodology to succeed with diverse, global audiences. In organizing the Istanbul conference, we took particular note of a consistent strain of criticism of the artificiality of a classroom environment, which became a running theme of many of our authors in the project's first year, captured in the previously published RETHINKING NEGOTIATION TEACHING: INNOVATIONS FOR CONTEXT AND CULTURE (DRI Press 2010). It would be hard to imagine a better environment for trying something new and different outside the classroom environment than Istanbul, and we tried to do honor to one of the world's greatest trading cities in our design for the conference. In brief, as described in this book chapter, we dispatched small teams of scholars into the city's famous bazaars, for one exercise in studying how negotiation might be taught more actively, and dispatched teams into the city's less touristy neighborhoods on another occasion, with instructions that required each team to negotiate internally. The resulting rich collection of scholarship is gathered in VENTURING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: VOLUME 2 IN THE RETHINKING NEGOTIATION TEACHING SERIES.

Book excerpt: Confined in a small space for months on end, subject to ship's discipline and living on limited food supplies, many sailors of old lost their minds – and no wonder. Many still do. The result in some instances was bloodthirsty mutinies, such as the whaleboat Sharon whose captain was butchered and fed to the ship's pigs in a crazed attack in the Pacific. Or mob violence, such as the 147 survivors on the raft of the Medusa, who slaughtered each other in a two-week orgy of violence. So serious was the problem that the Royal Navy's own physician claimed sailors were seven times more likely to go mad than the rest of the population. Historic figures such as Christopher Columbus, George Vancouver, Fletcher Christian (leader of the munity of the Bounty) and Robert FitzRoy (founder of the Met Office) have all had their sanity questioned. More recently, sailors in today's round-the-world races often experience disturbing hallucinations, including seeing elephants floating in the sea and strangers taking the helm, or suffer complete psychological breakdown, like Donald Crowhurst. Others become hypnotised by the sea and jump to their deaths. Off the Deep End looks at the sea's physical character, how it confuses our senses and makes rational thought difficult. It explores the long history of madness at sea and how that is echoed in many of today's yacht races. It looks at the often-marginal behaviour of sailors living both figuratively and literally outside society's usual rules. And it also looks at the sea's power to heal, as well as cause, madness.

But his books make it possible and easier for many of us to join him in the journey." In this enduring classic, rich with deep, original insight into the nature of early learning, John Holt was the first to make clear that, for small children, "learning is as natural as breathing." In his delightful book he observes how children actually learn to talk, to read, to count, and to reason, and how, as adults, we can best encourage these natural abilities in our children.

Book excerpt: Although the first air cadet unit was raised in Bournmouth in 1928, the first squadrons to be formed in a privately funded national organisation were part of the Air Defence Cadet Corps in 1938. Thousands of youngsters joined and were able to learn about aircraft, aerodynamics, navigation, mechanics and other subjects not taught in schools. The organization was to become known as The Air Training Corps (ATC) and as war loomed it was considered a useful RAF recruitment tool to attract potential airmen and ground crew. Throughout the war ATC cadets supported the home defences by fire watching, as messengers and as observers, working alongside the Home Guard, the fire services and other vital organisations. During the second half of the 1900s the corps continued to thrive. Girls were now included and retired RAF officers and other ranks continued to take an active part in each squadron. There are now over 900 squadrons within the UK, providing the same skills to modern youth and teaching them the importance of personal responsibility and teamwork via annual camps at RAF stations, adventure training and flight experience. This book looks at all aspects of the Air Cadet's history and tradition, including the RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force attached to public and grammar schools. It concludes with an analysis of what subjects and courses are currently available with many past and present illustrations. As seen in The York Press and The Scarborough News.

From the young age of five is when I came to realize that my life was full of so much pain and misfortune. From abuse to abandonment at the hands of my parents, I struggled to survive on my own. Oftentimes wanting to give up, I would find a way to go on. Along the way there were so many kind souls that helped me to find my way and do so much. Through all the suffering and pain as a child, I overcame so much. Surprisingly not the way one would assume.

Over 40 years of frequent diving have taught the author how to catch, clean, and cook exceptional ocean fare, from worldwide slimy sea cucumbers to the Northwest’s highly valued giant geoduck clams, and from huge Alaskan crabs to tasty Australian abalones. Various diving adventure stories (sharks! sea snakes! octopus! wolf eels!), plus 50 color photos, 18 YouTube videos, and 23 of his favorite recipes, pass that uniquely valuable knowledge on to the reader. He describes how the pure wonderment of being lost in constellations of moon jellyfish, or being blinded by the darkness of swimming underneath giant rays or whales, can create the more subtle dangers of distraction and disorientation. Scuba diving is by far the most fun and efficient way to harvest all types of seafood seldom found in stores or restaurants. Any true fresh seafood fan or scuba diver will certainly love this absorbing book of undersea and culinary exploits.

Book excerpt: A fun and inspirational homage to The Mary Tyler Moore Show --now 50 years after its debut -- with "life lessons" on how Mary Richards serves as an icon and inspiration for generations of women to "make it after all." When the character of Mary Richards walked into the WJM News Room in the fall of 1970, one of the most beloved shows in television history was born. The Mary Tyler Moore Show would win 29 Emmys over its 7-year run, and would later be lauded as one of the most influential TV shows of all time. Not only that, but Mary Richards would become an icon and inspiration for future generations of women (for example, Oprah Winfrey, Andrea Mitchell, and Tina Fey have all credited Mary with inspiring their careers). Now entertainment writer Paula Bernstein writes this charming celebration of this groundbreaking show, offering not only fun trivia and history, but also the "lessons" we've gleaned, including: Make the Most of a Small Space. Mary's adorable nook in a Victorian home became TV's most famous bachelorette pad -- and, with Mary's "M" on the wall, inspired thousands of women to adopt their own first initial as home décor. Get Along with Everyone at Work. Lou Grant was grumpy, Ted Baxter a blowhard, and Murray an all-around nice guy. Mary worked with all her colleagues with grace and style. (And at the time, Mary's position as Associate Producer at WJM was glass-shattering!). You Can Have the Town -- Take it!: How Mary's famous "hat throw" was an inspiration to independent, working women everywhere. And many more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the author stresses software as the most important topic in modern robotics. In particular the book concentrates on software for mobile robots, and the author demonstrates how inexpensive solutions can be constructed by mounting Raspberry Pi controllers and cameras onto model cars or other simple mechanical drive systems. He introduces EyeSim-VR, a freely available system that can realistically simulate driving, swimming, diving, and walking robots. The emphasis throughout is on algorithm development and all software assignments can run on real robot hardware, as well as on the simulation system presented. The book is suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses in artificial intelligence and robotics, and also for self-study by practitioners. All software used in this book, including all example programs, can be freely downloaded online, with native applications for MacOS, Windows, Linux, and Raspberry Pi.
