A child who loves a book will listen to it repeatedly, maintaining interest. Using a selected book in a number of consecutive preschool storytimes, but presenting it differently each time, can help children learn new skill sets. This book presents a new approach to storytime, one that employs repetition with variety to create an experience which helps children connect and engage with the story on a higher level. Diamant-Cohen, recently awarded the 2013 ASCLA Leadership and Professional Achievement Award, and Hetrick offer a year’s worth of activities specifically designed to address multiple intelligences through a repetition-based process. Incorporating recent theories on developmental learning, this book includes Scripts for 8 different books, with enough activities to repeat each one for six weeks, along with lists of optional alternative books Planning aids such as outlines of storytime sessions, a fill-in-the-blanks planning sheet, questions for evaluation, and tips for enhanced storytimes using props and crafts Detailed but straightforward explanations of theory and research that will help readers communicate effectively with parents, caregivers, and other stakeholders From setup to execution, here’s everything you need to create and implement a successful, elevated storytime.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Adventures of Pahwoo and Her Friends" is the penning of an ongoing bedtime story, told over seven years, to my two grandchildren. It began the night my youngest granddaughter was born, and my oldest granddaughter came to stay with Grammy and Pappy for quite a while, while baby sister spent time in the hospital's NICU. It began as an attempt to quell the uncertainties a four-year-old experiences, when separated from her parents for an extended period of time. It began, as I pulled the story from the air, and heard myself say, "Once upon a time, there was a very unusual little owl. For one thing, she was pink!"Every sleep-over following, for that seven-year period, we would pick up where we'd left off, bringing her younger sister along for the journey, as she became old enough to enjoy it. The grandchildren grew older, Grammy grew tired, and Pahwoo and her friends settled back into their idyllic farm life, leaving an amazing trail of adventures quietly behind them.It was at the urging of friends and family members to capture those stories in print, that I finally sat down at my laptop, to call them back from across the years. Alarmed that I could feel them slipping away, out of mind and into oblivion, I began to write feverishly, capturing what I could, not with the purpose of selling a book, but with the intent to save these stories for my grandchildren to someday read to their own children, and maybe even tell them about "Grammy" and the fun we had.The art inside the book is from a collection of drawings made by my oldest granddaughter, between the ages of 8 and 11, who enjoyed illustrating her favorite story moments. Perhaps someone else may find this little book someday, and share these stories with his or her own little ones. If so, I hope these whimsical, and admittedly far-fetched adventures bring your children and grandchildren as much joy and laughter as they brought us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Meaning of Educational Change Fullen wrote, Low morale, depressed, feeling unfairly blamed for the ills of society? You must be a teacher. This quote spoke volumes to me as I watched politicians jockeying for position by spewing their recycled political rhetoric, and then launch an all out attack against public school teachers. In years past these attacks had been levied against those receiving social security, Medicare and Medicaid which mainly affected the poor, disabled and elderly. Dont get me wrong these issues are still on the table, but I guess politicians felt they had beaten them with a dead horse and needed another soft target to spark the publics interest so public school teachers was it. They struck with a vengeance firing public school teachers by the thousands throughout the country. In an attempt to reduce the collective bargaining power of teacher unions, such as American Federation of Teacher (AFT) in Texas they claimed the only way they knew to help balance the state and district school budget shortfalls was to rescind some of the benefits they had agreed too. It hurts when the profession Ive dedicated over half of my adult life (25 yrs.) to; is under attack by politicians and others that have no true concept of whats involved in being a public school teacher. We have absolutely nothing to do with the decision making process. First were told to do one thing and then were told to do something entirely different. Its almost schizophrenic. To all of my colleagues that remain on the frontlines of public education and those that are planning to take up the banner This books for you. You might not have control over the decisions being made outside your classroom, but you can control those things going on inside. I provide ways to control student behavior by the design of your classroom to the use of a simple yellow tablet.

Book excerpt: The author of such works as The Big Sleep (1939), Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The Lady in the Lake (1943), and The Long Goodbye (1953), Raymond Chandler was one of the most popular mystery writers of his time. His works continue to be read today and have been adapted many times into films. Chandler's writings have also been receiving growing amounts of scholarly attention, and while most of this attention has focused on his use of language, critics are now studying the fictitious world he created and the milieu in which he wrote. This reference is a detailed guide to his writings. A chronology and brief biography overview the chief events in his life and career, with the biography discussing thematic patterns in his life and writings. The major section of the book, Chandler's World, describes the characters and places in his 7 novels and 25 short stories. Alphabetically arranged entries also provide summaries of his works, along with discussions of key topics. The entries are concise and informative and thus readily guide the reader through Chandler's complex universe. Appendices provide information about adaptations of his works, along with extensive listings of primary and secondary sources for additional consultation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only complete edition of stories by the undisputed master of detective literature, collected here for the first time in one volume, including some stories that have been unavailable for decades. When Raymond Chandler turned to writing at the age of forty-five, he began by publishing stories in pulp magazines such as “Black Mask” before later writing his famous novels. These stories are where Chandler honed his art and developed his uniquely vivid underworld, peopled with good cops and bad cops, informers and extortionists, lethally predatory blondes and redheads, and crime, sex, gambling, and alcohol in abundance. In addition to his classic hard-boiled stories–in which his signature atmosphere of depravity and violence swirls around the cool, intuitive loners whose type culminated in the famous detective Philip Marlowe–Chandler also turned his hand to fantasy and even a gothic romance. This rich treasury of twenty-five stories shows Chandler developing the terse, laconic, understated style that would serve him so well in his later masterpieces, and immerses the reader in the richly realized fictional universe that has become an enduring part of our literary landscape

The scoundrel, Chip, soon begins grooming Lydia to satisfy his twisted sexual desires. Lydia’s naiveté, combined with the subtlety of Chip’s advances, keeps young Lydia unaware of the mistreatment she is suffering at the hands of her own stepfather. The abuse continues in secret for nine long years. When a young man from church asks sixteen-year-old Lydia to be his girlfriend, she agrees. Chip’s subsequent jealousy provokes him into fits of rage. Ettie questions her daughter about why Chip may be targeting her with his anger and is shocked to hear Lydia’s response. Tackling her overwhelming fears that Chip will intercept them on the way to the airport, Ettie flees to safety with Lydia and her two brothers. Family and friends support Ettie and Lydia as they deal with the aftermath of abuse and betrayal. Although Lydia meets regularly with a therapist who specializes in helping sexual abuse victims, she struggles with her identity as a victim. Hiding behind a mask of happiness is Lydia’s way to cope with the vortex of pain swirling in her heart. Can God’s love break through the pain to write hope and healing into the rest of her story?
