Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical edited and written entirely by Charles Dickens and published from April 4, 1840 to December 4, 1841. It began with a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells about himself and his small circle of friends (which includes Mr. Pickwick), and their penchant for telling stories. Several short stories were included, followed by the novels The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. It is generally thought that Dickens originally intended The Old Curiosity Shop as a short story like the others that had appeared in Master Humphrey's Clock, but after a few chapters decided to extend it into a novel. Master Humphrey appears as the first-person narrator in the first three chapters of The Old Curiosity Shop but then disappears, stating, "And now that I have carried this history so far in my own character and introduced these personages to the reader, I shall for the convenience of the narrative detach myself from its further course, and leave those who have prominent and necessary parts in it to speak and act for themselves." Master Humphrey is a lonely man who lives in London. He keeps old manuscripts in an antique longcase clock by the chimney-corner. One day, he decides that he would start a little club, called Master Humphrey's Clock, where the members would read out their manuscripts to the others. The members include Master Humphrey; a deaf gentleman, Jack Redburn; retired merchant Owen Miles; and Mr. Pickwick from The Pickwick Papers. A mirror club in the kitchen, Mr. Weller's Watch, run by Mr. Weller, has members including Humphrey's maid, the barber and Sam Weller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Little Nell From Old Curiosity Shop Charles Dickens was born near Portsmouth, England, February 7, 1812. He early developed a fondness for reading, and when only nine years old had read "Don Quixote," "Gil Blas," "Robinson Crusoe," and several of the early English novels. When he was ten, his father, who was a clerk in the Navy, lost his employment, and was imprisoned for debt. The boy was placed in a blacking factory, where he pasted labels on the bottles of blacking. After a time his father, released from prison, secured an engagement as reporter on the "Morning Herald," and Charles was again sent to school. A few years later he entered a lawyer's office as clerk, but he had no taste for this work, and taught himself shorthand, with the idea of becoming a journalist. At the age of seventeen he became a reporter at Doctors' Commons, a court building of London, and at twenty-two he was employed as reporter on the staff of the London "Morning Chronicle." His work required him to travel all over England, collecting items of news and writing up such incidents as are now telegraphed to the papers daily by local reporters. As there were no railroads at the time, he went by stage-coach from place to place, and in this way he mingled with the people and saw every phase of life. While thus engaged he began to contribute original papers, under the signature "Boz," to the "Evening Chronicle." They were afterwards collected and published separately as "Sketches by Boz." In 1836 the "Pickwick Papers" appeared. These brought him fame and fortune, and he soon became the most popular writer of English fiction. The events and surroundings of Dickens's own early life, the people he met, and the places he visited as a reporter, constantly appear in his novels and stories. It was at Camden Town, for instance, while he worked in the blacking factory, that he lived with an old lady who took children to board, and who, he afterwards said, was the original of Mrs. Pipchin in "Dombey and Son." The most striking feature of Dickens as an author is the skill with which he seizes upon some peculiar trait or quality in one of the persons of his story, exaggerates it, and keeps it before his reader until all other traits and qualities are forgotten, and that character becomes the very personification of that one quality. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens's 200th birthday will be celebrated in 2012. Though his writings are now more than 100 years old, many remain in print and are avidly read and studied. Often overlooked--or unknown--are the considerable Christian convictions Dickens held and displayed in his work. This book fills that vacuum by examining Dickens the Christian and showing how Christian beliefs and practices permeate his work. This historical work is written for pastors, students, and laity alike. Chapters look at Dickens's life and work topically, arguing that Christian faith was front and center in some of what Dickens wrote (such as his children's work The Life of Our Lord) and saliently implicit throughout various other characters and plots. Since Dickens's Christian side is rarely considered, Gary Colledge illuminates a fresh angle of Dickens, and the 200th birthday makes it especially timely.

Book excerpt: This work tells the story of Nell and Her Grandfather, the two main characters from Charles Dicken's Old Curiosity Shop. It's the story of Nell Trent, a beautiful and virtuous young girl. An orphan, she lived with her maternal grandfather, who loved her deeply, in his shop of odds and ends. Nell never complained, but she lived a lonely life with almost no friends her own age. When Little Nell's grandfather gambles away his curiosity shop to his creditor, an evil dwarf named Quilp, the girl and her old man run to London. The story follows several unexpected events that unfold later in the story. This book adds a fresh perspective to the story of the young girl and her grandfather. It is a perfect read for the fans of Dickens' works.

Book excerpt: A remaking of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights set in postwar Japan A True Novel begins in New York in the 1960s, where we meet Taro, a relentlessly ambitious Japanese immigrant trying to make his fortune. Flashbacks and multilayered stories reveal his life: an impoverished upbringing as an orphan, his eventual rise to wealth and success—despite racial and class prejudice—and an obsession with a girl from an affluent family that has haunted him all his life. A True Novel then widens into an examination of Japan’s westernization and the emergence of a middle class. The winner of Japan’s prestigious Yomiuri Literature Prize, Mizumura has written a beautiful novel, with love at its core, that reveals, above all, the power of storytelling.
