The cargo was twenty negroes, and the were sold as slaves to the colonists. This was the way in which negro slavery began in this country. The buying and selling of men and making them serve their masters without pay went on for many years. As the United States grew larger this traffic in men grew until at last people began to be afraid slavery would spread over all the country. At first only a few people thought slavery was wrong. These talked and wrote about it until more and more people joined them in this belief. The quarrel grew and grew and waged fiercely between the people who believed in slavery and those who did not. Then at last this country was plunged into a cruel war. The Northern people who wished to put an end to slavery fought against the Southern people who owned the slaves. This war lasted several years. Many brave men died and many precious lives were lost that the negro might be free. The man who did more than any other to free the slaves and keep this country as one nation was Abraham Lincoln. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's First Love: A True Story Two miles south of Petersburg, in the state of Illinois, are the hills of New Salem, picturesque and beautiful; yet with all their picturesqueness and beauty, they would probably never have gained more than local fame had not Abraham Lincoln there spent his early life and met his first love. Just west of the Sangamon River is the hill on which the little town of New Salem was built. It is very steep and rugged until you reach the summit, where it is comparatively level. The view from this hill is one of the most beautiful in Illinois. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. So the man behind the mask, whether it be placed there by himself or others, must at length come forth in his own true character. We have seen, as has been well said, the Lincoln legend in actual process of evolution, and cannot again be surprised at the historical myths that have come down to us from more uncritical ages. But legend and myth must give way before conscientious investigation, an investigation which brings out suppressed facts and points an unerring finger at fallacies and fabrications. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Lincoln Early a century has passed since the men and maidens of a quiet Village in Kentucky met to celebrate the wedding day of Thomas Lincoln and his young bride Nancy. The ever - changing line that marks the borders of the West rested then over the territory of Indiana, and a large part of Kentucky was hardly more than a wilderness. Hospitality was the law of the land. The stranger, pausing on his journey for the night, became a guest of honor. The customs of the time were simple; but there was no want of friendliness in the company that gathered around the rude table to wish the bride and bridegroom a long and prosperous life. The table was loaded with the delicacies of the period. Venison, bear - meat, wild turkey and ducks - all that the forest yielded was there in abundance, and what the occasion may have lacked in formality was made up in good cheer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Abraham Lincoln There is no doubt that for some time prior to the assassination of Mr. Lincoln, Mr. Arnold had contemplated writing his life. Previous to that event, and while yet a member of Congress, he had commenced to write the History of Abraham Lincoln and the Overthrow of Slavery, which he completed and published in 1867. He brought to the preparation of that work the qualities of an able and conscientious historian, who wrote very largely from personal knowledge and personal observation. It is a book of real interest and exceptional historic value. Important and valuable facts are to be obtained therein which are not to be found elsewhere. This work was never entirely satisfactory to Mr. Arnold, so far as it related to Mr. Lincoln, and hence some two years since he determined to write in a stricter sense the life of Mr. Lincoln, in the light of additional material he had gathered, and disconnected with the history of the overthrow of slavery, except in so far as the subject was connected generally with the administration of Mr. Lincoln. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lincoln's Own Stories For many years the editor has collected and studied the literature relating to Abraham Lincoln, and his interest has led to the preparation of a book which he has endeavored to make both authentic and significant. His purpose has been to select stories which embody truth and point, and to arrange them, as far as possible, consecutively, so that they may furnish continuous illustrations of the various stages of Lincoln's wonderful career. Various dubious and often maudlin tales which have been attributed to Lincoln have been omitted. While it would be impossible to claim that any collection is absolutely comprehensive, yet it is believed that the best and the essential Lincoln stories are assembled here in a manner which will serve as an outline biography in story form. In connection with this plan the bare facts of Lincoln's life may be restated helpfully. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Boswell on Johnson and Pepys on himself tell us a great deal that is significant, but their copious notes leave untold more than they tell. It must inevitably be so. The full story of a man's life would take as long to read as to live, and twenty times as long to write. The amplest compilation of facts, say Lockhart on Scott or Moore on Byron, amounts at last to a slight and more or less fortuitous selection. Far from being regrettable, this is fortunate; but it is a fact. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
