Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale of the combat between the Storm-god and the Sea that began circulating in the early second millennium BCE was one of the most well-known ancient Near Eastern myths. Its widespread dissemination in distinct versions across disparate locations and time periods - Syria, Egypt, Anatolia, Ugarit, Mesopotamia, and Israel - calls for analysis of all the textual variants in order to determine its earliest form, geo-cultural origin, and transmission history. In undertaking this task, Noga Ayali-Darshan examines works such as the Astarte Papyrus, the Pisaisa Myth, the Songs of Hedammu and Ullikummi, the Baal Cycle, Enuma elis, and pertinent biblical texts. She interprets these and other related writings philologically according to their provenance and comparatively in the light of parallel texts. The examination of this story appearing in all the ancient Near Eastern cultures also calls for a discussion of the theology, literature, and history of these societies and the way they shaped the local versions of the myth.

Book excerpt: Presents unique insights from key player in first Gulf War, who continues to have an extremely high profile. There is renewed interest in diplomacy of first Gulf War in wake of current Iraq crisis. As Iraqi troops surged into Kuwait in 1990, British Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Alan Munro played a vital role in both forging and maintaining a formidable coalition to evict them. Never before had Western and Arab states fought side by side against another Arab country. He reveals here all the behind-the-scenes manouevring that made this possible. He recalls with verve and candour the frantic phone calls, the diplomatic interplay, the confusion of the battlefield, and the difficulties of dealing with the international media. Munro surrounds his revelations with a thoughtful and informed analysis of the international politics of the Middle East. With Western armies once more deployed in the Gulf, this new updated paperback edition of Munro's book provides a timely reminder of the pressures, pitfalls and potential of international diplomacy in the region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storm Clouds ... As darkness approached, the young lady—a senior at the University of Alabama—looked out at the ominous clouds forming across the horizon. All evening news reports had warned of possible tornado activity. As the clouds grew darker, Chelsey and her friends found that “safest place”—as some call the inner hallway—in her apartment. They told jokes to keep from showing their fear, and they waited. On campus and off , students and townspeople waited and watched—some even prayed. As the storm bore down on the sleepy university town, family groups and student groups alike found themselves huddled into whatever “safest place” could be found. One group of students found themselves crowded into an inner hallway. Laughing to cover their anxiety, they even convinced a couple of friends to get into a small linen closet to make room for others in the hallway. The lights flickered and went off . In the small linen closet, the darkness was exceeded only by the deafening noise and fierce, violent shaking. How can a few minutes last so long? The friends in the closet finally managed to uncover their ears, shaking themselves as they searched for the doorknob. They could see nothing as their minds tried to process all that had just happened. Their “ark of safety” had served them well. They opened the door. Indeed, they had unknowingly been inside an “ark of safety.” Their friends had crowded down next to the ark. But next to the ark is not the same as being in the ark. Stunned into disbelief, they looked ... their friends were ... RELIGION – SPIRITUALITY Truth Alive Ministries, Inc. P.O. Box 61581 Savannah, Georgia 31419

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ron Rhodes, a leading scholar on biblical prophecy, reveals how looming tensions over oil factor into end-time global alignments and how they may lead to a dramatic shift in the balance of power in the world. Much of the world's oil is in the custody of unstable and sometimes hostile regimes. Nations around the world are positioning themselves to protect their shrinking piece of the pie of dwindling oil reserves. Global tensions continue to rise. In The Coming Oil Storm Rhodes documents the role of Islam as the religion in control of most of the world's oil reserves and shows convincingly that once Muslims are in possession of the two swords of oil and nuclear weapons, they will feel empowered to act as they wish. Oil could even play a role in the path to Armageddon. The Coming Oil Storm is an essential guide for understanding the state of the world today...and what's yet to come.
