They desire above all things that, in their humble way, these books shall be the ambassadors of goodwill and understanding between East and West - the old world of Thought and the new of Action. In this endeavour, and in their own sphere, they are but followers of the highest example in the land. They are confident that a deeper knowledge Of the great ideals and lofty philosophy Of Oriental thought may help to a revival of that true spirit of Charity which neither despises nor fears the nations of another creed and colour. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of India's Gods and Heroes The word "Preface" suggests to many youthful minds something learned and dry, and the result is that the Preface is not read. Certainly a book of stories like these ought not to be burdened with anything dry at the outset; but if the stories themselves are to prove reasonably interesting, it will do no one any harm to know something about the books in which they are found and the people among whom the books were written. The language in,which these tales have come down to us is called Sanskrit, name which has nothing to do with that of any people like the names English, French, German, etc. - but is simply an adjective of which our term high class, though not an exact translation, gives a good idea; because Sanskrit was the language spoken by the Brahmans, - i.e. the priests - and kings of various different nations of ancient India, while other classes of society commonly spoke what was called Prakrit, a vulgar form of Sanskrit. This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindu Gods And Heroes Studies in the History of the Religion of India by Lionel D. (Lionel David) Barnett Let us imagine we are in a village of an Aryan tribe in the Eastern Panjab something more than thirty centuries ago. It is made up of a few large huts, round which cluster smaller ones, all of them rudely built, mostly of bamboo; in the other larger ones dwell the heads of families, while the smaller ones shelter their kinsfolk and followers, for this is a patriarchal world, and the housefather gives the law to his household. The people are mostly a comely folk, tall and clean-limbed, and rather fair of skin, with well-cut features and straight noses; but among them are not a few squat and ugly men and women, flat-nosed and nearly black in colour, who were once the free dwellers in this land, and now have become slaves or serfs to their Aryan conquerors. Around the village are fields where bullocks are dragging rough ploughs; and beyond these are woods and moors in which lurk wild men, and beyond these are the lands of other Aryan tribes. Life in the village is simple and rude, but not uneventful, for the village is part of a tribe, and tribes are constantly fighting with one another, as well as with the dark-skinned men who often try to drive back the Aryans, sometimes in small forays and sometimes in massed hordes. But the world in which the village is interested is a small one, and hardly extends beyond the bounds of the land where its tribe dwells. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From the Indian Epics The favourable reception given by the Indian public to the "Indian Heroes" has led me to write a companion book. In the Indian Heroes I confined myself to the actual doings of the heroes themselves. In the "Tales from the Indian Epics" I have told a series of stories which are incidentally related in the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Eight of the following stories will be found either in the Adi Parva or the Vana Parva of the Mahabharata. "The Descent of the Ganges" will be found in the Ramayana Balam Kandam. To these I have added the tenth story, "The Tale of the Pole Star," from the Shrimadbhagvat. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cradle Tales of Hinduism IN the following stories, it may be worth while to point out, we have a collection of genuine Indian nursery-tales. The only discretion which I have permitted to myself has been that some times, in choosing between two versions, I have preferred the story received by word of mouth to that found in the books. Each one, and every incident of each, as here told, has one or other of these forms of authenticity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
