Download or read book Coming Full Circle written by Wanda Lloyd and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Inspiring reading for aspiring journalists and students of civil rights.” — Kirkus Reviews Wanda Smalls Lloyd’s Coming Full Circle: From Jim Crow to Journalism—with a foreword by best-selling author Tina McElroy Ansa—is the memoir of an African American woman who grew up privileged and educated in the restricted culture of the American South in the 1950s–1960s. Her path was shaped by segregated social, community, and educational systems, religious and home training, a strong cultural foundation, and early leadership opportunities. Despite Jim Crow laws that affected where she lived, how she was educated, and what civil rights she would be denied, Lloyd grew up to realize her childhood dream of working as a professional journalist. In fact, she would eventually hold some of the nation’s highest-ranking newspaper editorial positions and become one of the first African American women to be the top editor of a mainstream daily newspaper. Along the way she helped her newspapers and other media organizations understand how the lack of newsroom and staff diversity interfered with perceptions of accuracy and balance for their audiences. Her memoir is thus a window on the intersection of race, gender, culture and the media’s role in our uniquely American experiment in democracy. How Lloyd excelled in a profession where high-ranking African American women were rare is a memorable story that will educate, entertain, and inspire. Coming Full Circle is a self-reflective exploration of the author’s life journey from growing up in coastal Savannah, Georgia, to editing roles at seven daily newspapers around the country, and circling back to her retirement in Savannah, where she now teaches journalism to a new generation.

Book Synopsis Barbie as a Fashion Icon by : AQEEL AHMED
Download or read book Barbie as a Fashion Icon written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2023-10-14 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In short: A six-year-old girl named Lily lived in the busy town of Glamour Ville. She was crazy about fashion, which showed in her huge heart. Lily would run from school to her bedroom every day, where her most-loved things were kept: her Barbie toys. These weren't any dolls; they were Barbies, the fashion icons whose beautiful style and ease had inspired generations. For as long as Lily could remember, she had been collecting Barbies, each one had its own story and outfit. Lily's grandmother, Grandma Rose, walked into her room one fateful afternoon. In her own time, Grandma Rose was known for having great style. She had a special treat in store for Lily. She showed her that Barbie was more than just a toy; she was a style icon. Lily was interested and asked Grandma Rose to explain. Grandma Rose then told the story of Barbie's interesting life, including how Ruth Handler made her and how her goal is to encourage girls to dream big and believe in themselves. Lily was very open to new ideas, and Barbie's reputation as a leader who sparked new careers and fashions around the world had a big effect on her. It got Lily's attention, and she wanted to know more about what Barbie wore. Grandma Rose painted a lively picture of Barbie's wide range of clothes, which included everything from fancy ball gowns to useful business clothes. Barbie had turned into a pilot, a doctor, a scientist, and many other things, showing girls that they could do anything they set their minds to. Lily was very interested in the idea of becoming a fashion star like Barbie. Her grandmother praised her and told her that playing with Barbie dolls and putting on fashion shows in her bedroom were the start of her own fashion business. Lily set out to make her Barbie dolls into the most stylish and powerful fashion stars in Glamour Ville, driven by her newfound desire to succeed. She learned about great designers and fashion history, and then she started making tiny couture clothes for her toys. With a sewing machine, model, and sketches of her newest designs on the walls, her bedroom was turned into a busy fashion studio. People noticed Lily's drive and skill. She was asked to show off her designs for Barbie dolls at Glamourville's Annual Fashion Gala. This was a big deal for her folks. Lily's Barbie dolls walked the stage at the Fashion Gala, and the crowd was amazed by how creative and different they looked. Lily stood at her display and was moved to tears by the cheers and praise. Fashion designers, the media, and famous people praised her, amazed by her skills and determination. Lily's love of fashion grew over the years, and she finally went to design school and became a famous fashion designer in Glamour Ville. Her beloved Barbie dolls had always given her ideas, and she thought that her success was due to the lessons she had learned from Grandma Rose and her dolls. One day, Lily got a special letter inviting her to the Barbie Fashion Institute. There, she would work with the real Barbie on a fashion line. When Lily worked with Barbie to make a line that combined Barbie's classic style with Lily's modern designs, she reached her goal in full circle. The selection was a big deal all over the world, giving young girls and fashion fans ideas. Lily's experience made her want to help young designers-to-be. She does this by showing them how important it is to be inspired, believe in themselves, and remember that goals can come from strange places, like favorite childhood toys like Barbie. Lily carried on Barbie's tradition as a fashion icon. She is a symbol of how icons last, how powerful dreams can be, and how young girls can be anything they want to be. Story Starts Hear: A long time ago, there was a girl named Lily who lived in the busy town of Glamour Ville. She loved clothes so much that they were bigger than her heart. She rushed home from school every day, took off her shoes, and went straight to her room, where she kept her most valuable things: her Barbie toys. Lily's room was a beautiful place where she could be creative. When you walked in, there would be a crazy mix of colors, textures, and small mannequins. The number of Barbie dolls she had was truly amazing. They were carefully arranged on the shelves, and each one had its own clothes, decorations, and personality. These dolls were more than just toys; they were her friends, confidantes, and creative guides. Her grandma, Grandma Rose, who used to be very into fashion, sparked her interest in it. Lily thought Grandma Rose's stories about how beautiful she was as a child and how perfect her style was were like fairy tales. She would be amazed as her grandmother talked about her life in fashion, from going to galas with famous people to making her own clothes. Lily's soft heart was stirred by those events to want to do more. Once the sun went down, Lily's room turned into a busy fashion studio, and a warm glow spread through Glamour Ville. A small sewing machine was sitting on a table with bright thread spools all around it. The newest work in progress was proudly shown off on a small doll. Lily's design ideas were drawn on the walls, making her dreams come true. Lily first tried her hand at fashion by drawing on her Barbie dolls. She would spend hours carefully making them high-end clothes. Her skilled fingers sewed tiny seams and added tiny buttons and lace trim, making her dream come true. Every outfit she wore was a work of art that was based on different styles she saw in fashion magazines and books. But it wasn't just the clothes. Lily named each Barbie doll after a different person. Lily made a stylish spacesuit by hand for one of the dolls and turned it into a brave astronaut. Someone else wore a chef's hat and an apron and dressed up as a famous cook. Lily had a huge imagination, and her toys were her endless dreams come true. One day, Lily was finishing up a beautiful evening dress for her favorite Barbie when she got a letter she didn't expect. There was an offer to Glamour Ville's Annual Fashion Gala, a big event that the best people in fashion attend. Lily's heart beat fast as she read the invitation because she knew this was her chance to show everyone how good she was. Lily and her Barbie dolls got ready for the Fashion Gala with her parents' help and unwavering dedication. Each doll was dressed in a beautiful outfit that Lily had made, and they all stood in a line on the little runway in her bedroom. When the Gala night came around, the huge hall was filled with excitement. As the fashion show started, Lily's Barbie dolls sashayed down the runway, capturing the attention of the crowd with their beauty and grace. There was a lot of cheering and praise, and Lily felt like she'd accomplished something she'd never done before. She has taken the first step toward her goal of becoming a fashion star. After the presentation, fashion designers, reporters, and even famous people came up to Lily to tell her how much they admired her amazing ability. They were amazed at how creative she was and how she could turn a childhood hobby into art. Lily smiled happily because she knew she was about to start a journey that would change her life. Lily has kept up her interest in fashion over the years. After going to design school and getting better at what she did, she became famous as a fashion designer in Glamour Ville. She got ideas from her Barbie dolls, who taught her about style, imagination, and the strength of dreams. Lily got a letter one day that would change her life forever. She was shocked when she saw that it was an offer to the Barbie Fashion Institute. She would get to meet the real Barbie and work with her on a fashion line. Lily was excited as she set out on this journey. She met Barbie herself at the Barbie Fashion Institute. Barbie was a fashion icon who had inspired generations of girls. They worked together to make a line that combined Lily's modern designs with Barbie's classic style. Young girls all over the world were inspired to believe in themselves and their goals by the collection, which went on tour around the world. These were not any ordinary dolls, though. They were Barbies, fashion icons who had inspired generations with their amazing style and ease. For as long as Lily could remember, she had been collecting Barbies. Each one had its own story and outfit. Lily thought that Barbies were more than just plastic dolls. They were like doors that led to a world of endless creativity and potential. Her goals and dreams were reflected in each Barbie. She used them as blank canvases to write stories about fashion and adventure. These dolls were more than just things to her; they were her friends, her quiet confidantes, and the main characters in the exciting stories she made up in her head when she was young.
Book Synopsis Victorian Dress in Contemporary Historical Fiction by : Danielle Mariann Dove
Download or read book Victorian Dress in Contemporary Historical Fiction written by Danielle Mariann Dove and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-19 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Dress in Contemporary Historical Fiction is the first full-length study to investigate and attend to the deeply suggestive and highly symbolic iterations of Victorian women's dress in the contemporary cultural imagination. Drawing upon a range of popular and less well-studied neo-Victorian novels published between 1990 and 2014, as well as their Victorian counterparts, 19th-century illustrative material, and extant Victorian garments, Danielle Dove explores the creative possibilities afforded by dress and fashion as gendered sites of agency and affect. Focusing on the relationship between texts and textiles, she demonstrates how dress is central to the narrativization, re-formulation, and re-fashioning of the material past in the present. In its examination of the narrative trajectories, lively vitalities, and material entanglements that accrue to, and originate from, dress in the neo-Victorian novel, this study brings a fresh approach to reading Victorian sartorial culture. For researchers and students of Victorian and neo-Victorian studies, dress history, material culture, and gender studies, this volume offers a rich resource with which to illuminate the power of fashion in fiction.
Book Synopsis Books of the Dead by : Tim Lanzendörfer
Download or read book Books of the Dead written by Tim Lanzendörfer and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zombie has cropped up in many forms—in film, in television, and as a cultural phenomenon in zombie walks and zombie awareness months—but few books have looked at what the zombie means in fiction. Tim Lanzendörfer fills this gap by looking at a number of zombie novels, short stories, and comics, and probing what the zombie represents in contemporary literature. Lanzendörfer brings together the most recent critical discussion of zombies and applies it to a selection of key texts including Max Brooks’s World War Z, Colson Whitehead’s Zone One, Junot Díaz’s short story “Monstro,” Robert Kirkman’s comic series The Walking Dead, and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Within the context of broader literary culture, Lanzendörfer makes the case for reading these texts with care and openness in their own right. Lanzendörfer contends that what zombies do is less important than what becomes possible when they are around. Indeed, they seem less interesting as metaphors for the various ways the world could end than they do as vehicles for how the world might exist in a different and often better form.

Book Synopsis Changing the Story by : Gayle Greene
Download or read book Changing the Story written by Gayle Greene and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-22 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "... Changing the Story... gives an excellent and well-informed account of the differences between the American, Canadian, British, and French attitudes towards feminism and feminist fiction and literary theory.... a very readable book... which reminds us that literature can change us, and that through it we can change ourselves." -- Margaret Drabble "A distinctive contribution -- clear, elegant, precise, and well-read -- to the feminist discussion of narrative, of Anglo/Canadian/white North American novelists, and to contemporary fiction. Greene tracks how feminist novelists draw upon, and negotiate with traditional narrative patterns, and how their critical approach implicates, and provokes, social change. The book brings us to an intelligent post-humanism which does not scant the social meanings of metafictional critique. And, in addition, this book remembers hope." -- Rachel Blau DuPlessis "Changing the Story is an invaluable guide to the feminist classics of the last three decades. This is cultural criticism at its best: engaged, re-visionary, and politically astute." -- Nancy K. Miller "Greene tells a very good tale about how feminist fiction emerged, developed, made changes in the world, and now threatens to wane." -- The Women's Review of Books "Her probing analysis... should captivate general readers as well as academics." -- WLW Journal "Changing the Story is an important work of feminist criticism certain to spark controversy within the feminist community." -- American Literature The feminist fiction movement of the 1960s--1980s was and is as significant a movement as Modernism. Gayle Greene focuses on the works of Doris Lessing, Margaret Drabble, Margaret Atwood, and Margaret Laurence to trace the roots of this feminist literary explosion. She also speculates on the future of feminist fiction in the current regressive period of "post feminism."
Book Synopsis Elizabeth Spencer: Novels & Stories (LOA #344) by : Elizabeth Spencer
Download or read book Elizabeth Spencer: Novels & Stories (LOA #344) written by Elizabeth Spencer and published by Library of America. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 831 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On her centennial, a contemporary of Flannery O’Connor and Harper Lee joins the Library of America with a volume that restores to print her searing novel about the late Jim Crow South Elizabeth Spencer (1921-2019) was a major figure of the Southern Renaissance, though today her many books and stories are scattered or out of print. This Library of America volume brings together the very best of her writing--three novels and nineteen stories--from a career spanning more than six decades. The Voice at the Back Door (1957), greeted by The New Yorker as "a practically perfect novel" and here restored to print, portrays small-town life in Mississippi during the late Jim Crow era and the self-interest and hatred that kept injustice firmly in place. Published two years after the Emmett Till lynching, it captures the spitting vehemence of its white characters' speech and may have been proven too potentially controversial for the Pulitzer board (which awarded no prize in 1957). Also included in this volume are The Light in the Piazza (1960), Spencer's most famous work, a deftly poignant comedy about Americans abroad that was adapted to the screen by Guy Green; and a second superb Italian novella, Knights and Dragons (1965), reminiscent of Henry James's novels in its atmosphere, interiority, and concern with transplanted Americans. Spencer excelled in the short story form and this volume presents a career-spanning selection by editor Michael Gorra that ranges from the early "First Dark" (1959), a kind of ghost story about a spectral oversized house in a Southern town, to the valedictory "The Wedding Visitor" (2013), about the refusal to let the all-enveloping world of place, family, and childhood define one's adult life. Spencer's special focus was families, and few writers have so brilliantly plumbed the passions that unite them and the inner upheavals that can tear them apart.

This book was released on 2019-06-25 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastside High School in Paterson, New Jersey, a school that had transformed over the years into one of the worst high schools in the state, became the subject of a full-length Warner Brothers motion picture entitled Lean on Me. The main character of the movie was the beleaguered principal known as Crazy Joe Clark, who had been assigned by the district superintendent to come in and turn things around. He introduced what eventually became very controversial administrative methods that ultimately led to significant changes at the school. Six-Part Harmony: The Untold Story of Riff chronicles the relationship of the R&B recording artists known as Riff with their manager, mentor, and vocal arranger, Dale "Skip" Van Rensalier, as they, together, navigated the maze of the recorded music industry while trying to attain some significant recognition for the group. Riff parachuted to fame after appearing in one of the more recognizable scenes of Lean on Me, singing the Eastside school song in the school bathroom at the behest of Principal Clark (portrayed by actor Morgan Freeman). They were students at Eastside High School at that time. Skip, a 1966 Eastside High School graduate, had returned to his alma mater as a school social worker and met Riff after hearing them sing their rendition of the school song over the school intercom during a homeroom period. With the success of Lean on Me and the exposure that Riff achieved from their appearance in the movie, once contracts had been negotiated and signed between Riff and Skip, the entertainment business journey began. What the six of them never realized was that it would be a journey filled with twists, turns, hills, valleys, lies, ego trips, and empty promises. In other words, a reality check that blindsided all of them. This is their untold story.

This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her journey of recovery from bipolar disorder and her insights are described in this book, an autobiography of Carol Noyes. When Carol went through mid-life crisis in the spring of 2006 her world was turned upside-down. Carol was able to wean herself off drugs, after over four years on psychiatric medications. She found natural alternatives that effectively helped her to recover and to lead a productive life. Carol believes that the current medical paradigm is inadequate and often unable to help individuals to heal and to bounce back. Carol nearly died from a combination of the swine flu and lithium poisoning. Her descent to the bottom of the metaphorical well provided the impetus for her to research non-drug therapies. These therapies, along with faith, hope, and courage, brought Carol back to a peaceful life. Carol recounts her life and investigates the factors that precipitated imbalance. She writes about her extraordinary experiences during expanded states of consciousness. She also delves into the world of symbols and mythologies, describing how they became poignant for her. Carol calls her experience a time of spiritual awakening; a time of developing self-esteem, learning to love herself, and finding her true purpose. She hopes that her insights will help others going through spiritual crisis. Those interested in humanistic psychology, personal growth, and spirituality may find this book fascinating.
