Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Children of Crisis, a profound examination of how listening to stories promotes learning and self-discovery. As a professor emeritus at Harvard University, a renowned child psychiatrist, and the author of more than forty books, including The Moral Intelligence of Children, Robert Coles knows better than anyone the transformative power of learning and literature on young minds. In this “persuasive” book (The New York Times Book Review), Coles convenes a virtual symposium of college, law, and medical school students to explore the phenomenon of storytelling as a source of values and character. Here are transcriptions of classroom conversations in which Coles and his students discuss the impact of particular works of literature on their moral development. Here also are Coles’s intimate personal reflections on his experiences in the civil rights movement, his child psychiatry practice, and his interactions with his own literary mentors including William Carlos Williams and L.E. Sissman. The life lessons learned from these stories are of special resonance to doctors and teachers looking to apply them in classroom and clinical environments. The rare public intellectual to be honored with a MacArthur Award, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a National Humanities Medal, Robert Coles is a true national treasure, and The Call of Stories is, in the words of National Book Award winner Walker Percy, “Coles at his wisest and best.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem this project attempts to solve is to develop a workable moral education in light of the clash between religious forms of moral education and U.S. Supreme Court decisions concerning them. The concept of story and storytelling has been suggested as a unifying focus for disparate prescriptions for moral education. Several recent approaches to moral storytelling have been proposed. The approaches of William Bennett, Nel Noddings, and Herbert Kohl are among those which have attempted to combine moral education and storytelling within the last decade. Bennett is identified with other theorists whose primary concern is the moral content of a story. Noddings is identified as a process theorist, whose primary concern is the process of moral storytelling, not the content. Kohl is identified as a reflection theorist, whose approach challenges tradition in the hope of creating a more moral society. Each one of these three approaches attempts to provide a comprehensive program of moral education, but they fall short of that goal. The purpose of this project, then, is to construct a storytelling moral education program that improves upon earlier approaches. Using the three levels of moral thinking posited by R.M. Hare, a three-level approach to moral storytelling is proposed. The intuitive, critical, and meta-ethical levels of moral thinking that Hare refers to are used to frame a new, three-level, approach to moral storytelling. The three-level approach combines content, process, and reflection into a unified prescription for moral education. Thus, a more comprehensive plan for moral education through storytelling is developed, one that respects traditional forms of moral education while remaining within the parameters set by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moral Instruction in the Public Schools Through the Story It is a matter of vital concern to those who have the interests of the6 nation at heart that ways and means be developed to give the children of our schools education along the lines of character building. That the children of today are the citizens of tomorrow is a truism makes it none the less imperative that we give careful heed to the kind of character material we are putting, or allowing to be put, into the moral structure of those future citizens. More and more the realization is growing that the school has not been doing all that it can in this important matter, and more and more firmly is the conviction being forced upon those who are thinking in terms of national interest that the school must take over as a definite part of its work the moral instruction of the children. We need to appreciate the fact that the child begins life ignorant of the moral experience of previous generations, 'and minus the consequent moral wisdom. He must learn to speak the truth, to be kind, to obey, to do his Share of the world's work, to serve the good. If he is to progress above the former level, he must be put into touch with that previous experience. And it is not enough for his best development that he be put in touch with it in the hit or miss way of the chance contacts with ordinary life. He must be made the possessor of the accumulated moral knowledge of the race. As he is trained according to carefully developed plan's in other branches of knowledge, so must he be in this. Only so can we hope to have a mass of citizens whose purposes and ambitions are in accord with our national standards and traditions and the ever expanding ideals Of civilization. The state department of education believes that results can be obtained in moral instruction through the use of stories which illustrate the virtues. In this pamphlet, arranged according to grades, are listed a number of stories illustrating particular virtues, which, as a result of a questionnaire sent out to the teachers of the state, it is considered desirable to try to inculcate in the lives of the children. Under each virtue several stories are given, with reference to the books where they may be found. Under the subject, Respect and Reverence, reference is made in each grade to Ethical Readings from the Bible. Teachers will find many passages referring to each of several virtues. They should make whatever selection that seems best suited to their needs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
