Some he te soled, some he patched or mended, others he put new toes to. Often through the window he could see his handiwork. He had plenty of work because he sewed well, used good leather, was moderate in his prices and' kept his word. If he could finish the work by the day fixed he would undertake it; if not he would say so frankly and never try to deceive. And every one knew him and he was never short of work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Fairy Tales, Folklore and Legends The stories have yet to be discovered which can compete with folk-lore stories in fascination for the young, and the reason for this it is not hard to divine. The folk-lore tale has had its origin among plain, artless people, in many respects only grown up children, and its survival to our times is simply evidence of these people having regarded it as being too excellent for them to allow it to be lost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Index to Fairy Tales, Myths and Legends The increased use of the story hour in work with children and the ever-widening use of fables and myths in school work have Shown the need of an index which would save time by indicating at a glance the source of an asked - for story. When eight out of ten versions of a myth are given in their respective books under different titles bearing little or no resemblance to the one Sought for, when each new translator or compiler may give an entire set of new titles to old favorites, mechanical aid is necessary to Save reason as well as time. This index includes, besides fairy tales and fables, the stories from Greek and Norse mythology which seemed most likely to be called for, also hero stories and some modern stories like the Leak in the dyke, which are not strictly fairy tale or legend but which are constantly asked for by teachers and story tellers. Since inquiries for stories are mainly by title this is first of all a title index. When the same story appears under various titles, it is indexed under the best known or under the one that seemed most descriptive of the story, and references are made from all the other titles. The title as contained in each particular book, when differing from the one under which it is indexed, is given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. In the case of mythology and hero stories the titles have been inverted, or invented if necessary, in order to bring the entry under the name of the character. When a book con tains a number of stories about the same person but bear ing different titles, a general reference to the book is given; when two only, but not in direct Sequence, the titles are given in parenthesis at the end of the entry. The cross references from one story to another are intended to aid story tellers by suggesting similar stories in case the one wished for is not obtainable. The cross references from subjects - holidays, stars, flowers, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends and Stories: Italy It was the night on which our Blessed Lord was born, and the angels had brought their message of peace and goodwill to the shepherds upon the lonely hillside. The glory of that heavenly vision had left the men awed and silent as they gathered round their fire. The news of the birth of the long looked for Infant King filled their hearts so full of wonder and of joy that for a while they could not speak. But erelong they roused themselves and in low tones began to talk of what they had seen and of all that the message of the angels meant. There was surely but one thing to be done - they must set out at once to seek the new-born King. So they began to plan how they might safely leave their sheep, and to pile the fire high with dry branches that the blaze might keep away all evil beasts. So intent were they on their preparations, and so filled with the wonder of that night, that none of them gave a thought to the little child who lay in the warm shelter of a rock close to the fire. She had been helping her father tend the sheep all day, and had crept into the bed of dry leaves to rest, for she was very tired. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories and Legends of Travel and History, for Children To my little friends, Mary and Alice Seelye, I wish to inscribe this volume, in remembrance of a pleasant summer spent under their father's roof - the Water Cure, at Cleveland, where a part of these sketches were written, - in remembrance of their happy, cordial faces, and of the "loving kindness" of their parents - of much genial companionship and generous sympathy. In remembrance of the beautiful wood, with its flowery paths, its hills and dells and darkly shadowed water, where we often wandered together; - where my dear baby grew like the flowers, drinking in dew and sunshine - strengthened by fresh winds and aromatic odors, - where under fluttering forest-leaves her little face caught its first gleams of thought and tender meanings, like their glinting lights and flying shades, and her little voice seemed intoned by their silvery murmurs, the love-notes of birds and prattle of streams. In remembrance of the sweet spring in the glen, and the shady resting-places on the hill, - of the grand old oaks, and of the violets at their feet. In remembrance of the lovely child, with whom we last visited that wood, - dear Georgiana Gordon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: HISTORY and mythology, fact and fable, are closely interwoven in the texture of Japanese life and thought; indeed, it is within relatively recent years only that exact comparative criticism has been able, with some degree of accuracy, to divide the one from the other. The accounts of the God-period contained in the Kojiki and the Nihongi-"Records of Ancient Matters" compiled in the eighth century of the Christian era-profess to outline the events of the vast cycles of years from the time of Ame-no-mi-naka-nushi-no-kami's birth in the Plain of High Heaven, "when the earth, young and like unto floating oil, drifted about medusa-like," to the death of the Empress Suiko, A.D. 628.
