Book excerpt: Based on the traditional Book of Hours - psalms said daily, at set times, by religious communities throughout the world - Seasons of the Day reveals the enduring relevance of this ancient practice to contemporary living. In Seasons of the Day, Sister Stan, knowing that our modern-day understanding of time pushes us to our stressed-out limits, passes on the monastic ritual to the layperson. Here, as she slows us down, she reveals the psalms through her own words, her own prayers. Using them, she also guides us tenderly through a four-week period, from the silence and mystery of pre-dawn (matins) through to the reflective conclusion of the day (compline). In a world that can often seem hostile and unfriendly, her gentle reflections help the reader find inner peace and confidence. A prayer book for today

Book excerpt: Imagine Huck Finn "lighting out for the territories" 150 years later, this time as a late-30s corporate dropout turned backcountry snowboarder and mountain climber. Dudeville is a coming-of-middle-age adventure story, set in and all around small-town Colorado during the outdoor sports explosion of the 1990s. Inspired by a wide and wild range of influences -- from Thoreau, Whitman, Muir and Twain, to Jack Kerouac, Edward Abbey and Warren Miller -- Dudeville is equal parts extreme sports tale, male bonding romp, and reluctant love story, a sensuous, lyrical, exuberant exploration of the American West. Dudeville's author, J.D. Kleinke, was a serious health care guy in Baltimore until he discovered snowboarding, hang gliding, jam bands, and the raw spiritual power of life above treeline . . . and moved to Colorado. He is the author of three books about medicine in America, including Catching Babies, a novel about the culture of maternity care and childbirth. He has also been involved in the formation, management, and governance of several health care companies and non-profit organizations. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and dozens of medical and business publications. He lives with his wife in Half Moon Bay, California, and Portland, Oregon. From Dudeville: "From this summit, the horizon seesaws open into an electric blue dream of Colorado sky. The adolescent swagger and brawn of the Rockies is nothing like the stooped and rounded hills back east. Spiked with mammoth formations of rock and ice, this vast, continental cacophony is the very roof of the world, pushed skyward by geologic time while collapsing under its own weight. I drop in, and surf off the wind-scoured edge, working the margin between transcendent bliss and utter catastrophe, a controlled fury exploding from my core into arcing snowboard turns as I crisscross the fall-line and dissolve into gravity..."

It offers advice on subjects such as developing presence onstage; increasing strength, flexibility and physical expression; developing partner and trio relationships; understanding the power of the mask; and working with an audience - in particular, turning a performance into a conversation with the audience and increasing the actor's ability to connect with a crowd. Fannie took that chance. She was full of hope and sure that leaving Georgia for Washington, DC, would change her life. It is fifteen years after the end of the Civil War, and Fannie, a forty-one-year-old spinster lives in a small town in Georgia, where she works as a seamstress. One day, her elderly friend, Sarah, gives her a beautiful gold pendant watch. She tells Fannie that the watch has magical properties that will make her younger. Fannie is reluctant to take the watch but humors her friend. Then something terrible happens, and Fannie is forced to use the watch. She changes her age to twenty and leaves town with nothing but a valise with a few personal items, the clothes on her back, and a handful of dollars. Fannie loves her new life in Washington, DC, and the friends she meets in the rooming house where she lives. But life is not always easy, and Fannie has obstacles to overcome. When Fannie meets John, she finds him attractive. He begins wooing her right away, though she is hesitant to respond so quickly. She is inexperienced in the ways of the world and of men. But new problems arise, and when unbearable events take place, she leans on John and gives into his pleas that they marry. Things are good for a time. But when Sarah dies, Fannie must see that her granddaughter gets an education, and her life begins to fall apart. She is unable to conceive. Financial worries and other issues stalk her. Will her marriage survive? Will she survive?

Book excerpt: In this rich and insightful collection of essays, leading anthropologist Ghassan Hage brings together academics across political science, philosophy, anthropology and sociology for an examination into the experience of waiting. What is it to wait? What do we wait for? And how is waiting connected to the social worlds in which we live? From Beckett's darkly comic play Waiting for Godot, to the perpetual waiting of refugees to return home or to moments of intense anticipation such as falling in love or the birth of a baby, there are many ways in which we wait. This compelling collection of essays suggests that this experience is among the essential conditions that make us human and connect us to others.

Most humans stay far from its borders--but Victory Vaughn, Boston's only professional demon slayer, isn't exactly human.... Boston's zombies have suddenly become inexplicably violent--horror movie-style--resulting in a catastrophic all-out battle against humans. More troubling to Vicky is that she's had dreams and visions of herself fighting alongside the demons. At least, she hopes they're just visions--otherwise, that puts her on the front lines of the wrong side of the war. Vicky's not surprised to discover that Pryce, her demi-demon cousin and loathed adversary, is behind the outbreak of the zombie plague, having formed an unholy pact with the Old Ones. Now, as the violence escalates and alliances shift, Vicky knows she's the only one who can stop the plague. Unless the pack of hellhounds on her trail finds her first.

Book excerpt: This IBM® Redbooks® publication helps you with the planning, installation, and configuration of the new IBM Linear Tape File SystemTM (LTFS) Enterprise Edition (EE) V1.1.1.2 for the IBM TS3310, IBM TS3500, and IBM TS4500 tape libraries. LTFS EE enables the use of LTFS for the policy management of tape as a storage tier in an IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFSTM) based environment and helps encourage the use of tape as a critical tier in the storage environment. LTFS EE can run any application that is designed for disk files on tape. LTFS EE supports IBM Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 6 and 5 tape drives in IBM TS3310, TS3500, and TS4500 tape libraries. IBM TS1140 and IBM TS1150 tape drives are supported in TS3500 and TS4500 tape libraries. LTFS EE can play a major role in reducing the cost of storage for data that does not need the access performance of primary disk. The use of LTFS EE to replace disks with tape in Tier 2 and Tier 3 storage can improve data access over other storage solutions because it improves efficiency and streamlines management for files on tape. LTFS EE simplifies the use of tape by making it transparent to the user and manageable by the administrator under a single infrastructure. This publication is intended for anyone who wants to understand more about LTFS EE planning and implementation. This book is suitable for IBM clients, IBM Business Partners, IBM specialist sales representatives, and technical specialists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern distributed systems, such as the Internet of Things or cloud computing, verifying their correctness is an essential aspect. This requires modeling approaches that reflect the natural characteristics of such systems: the locality of their components, autonomy of their decisions, and their asynchronous communication. However, most of the available verifiers are unrealistic because one or more of these features are not reflected. Accordingly, in this book we present an original formalism: the Integrated Distributed Systems Model (IMDS), which defines a system as two sets (states and messages), and a relation of the "actions" between these sets. The server view and the traveling agent’s view of the system provide communication duality, while general temporal formulas for the IMDS allow automatic verification. The features that the model checks include: partial deadlock and partial termination, communication deadlock and resource deadlock. Automatic verification can support the rapid development of distributed systems. Further, on the basis of the IMDS, the Dedan tool for automatic verification of distributed systems has been developed.
