Book excerpt: This report documents the culmination of in-house work in the area of uncertainty quantification and probabilistic techniques for aeroelasticity. The work was divided into different project areas, including: accurate analysis of limit-cycle oscillations for simple aeroelastic systems with variability; probabilistic prediction of flutter in systems with distributed variability (random fields); optimization of nonlinear dynamic systems (deterministic with intent to transition to risk-quantified optimization), and incorporation of sensitivities into probabilistic analyses. Technology developed in this task is being transitioned in the STOFAM program and extended in the new laboratory task "Risk-Based Computational Prototyping."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great bulk of the literature on aeroelasticity is devoted to linear models. The oretical work relies heavily on linear mathematical concepts, and experimental results are commonly interpreted by assuming that the physical model behaves in a linear manner. Nevertheless, significant work has been done in nonlinear aero elasticity, and one may expect this trend to accelerate for several reasons: our ability to compute has increased at an astonishing rate; as linear concepts have been assimilated widely, there is a natural increase in interest in the foundations of nonlinear modeling; and, finally, some phenomena long recognized to be of interest, but beyond the effective range of linear models, are now known to be essentially nonlinear in nature. In this volume, an exhaustive review of the literature is not attempted. Rather the emphasis is on fundamental ideas and a representative selection of problems. Despite obvious successes in research on problems of aeroelasticity and the existence of a broad literature, including a number of excellent monographs, up to now little attention has been devoted to a general nonlinear theory of interac tion. For the most part nonlinearity has been considered either solely in the description of the behavior of a shell or in the description of the motion of a gas.

This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing interest in understanding how uncertainties in flight conditions and structural parameters affect the character of a limit cycle oscillation (LCO) response, leading to failure of an aeroelastic system. Uncertainty quantification of a stochastic system (parametric uncertainty) with stochastic inputs (initial condition uncertainty) has traditionally been analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). Probability density functions (PDF) of the LCO response are obtained from the MCS to estimate the probability of failure. A candidate approach to efficiently estimate the PDF of an LCO response is the stochastic projection method. The objective of this research is to extend the stochastic projection method to include the construction of B-spline surfaces in the stochastic domain. The multivariate B-spline problem is solved to estimate the LCO response surface. An MCS is performed on this response surface to estimate the PDF of the LCO response. The probability of failure is then computed from the PDF. This method is applied to the problem of estimating the PDF of a subcritical LCO response of a nonlinear airfoil in inviscid transonic flow. The stochastic algorithm provides a conservative estimate of the probability of failure of this aeroelastic system two orders of magnitude more efficiently than performing an MCS on the governing equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear and nonlinear modal interactions in aeroelastic structures under wide band random excitation are examined analytically and experimentally. The analytical investigation deals with the random response characteristics of two- and three-degree-of-freedom nonlinear models in the neighborhood of internal resonance conditions. These conditions take the form of linear relationships between the normal mode frequencies and are established from the linear modal analysis of each model. The Fokker-Planck equation approach is used to derive a general differential equation for the response joint moments. In view of the models nonlinearity the differential equation is found to constitute a set of infinite coupled first order differential equations. These equations are closed by using two different truncation schemes which are based on the properties of response joint cumulants. These two schemes are known as Gaussian and non-Gaussian closures. The analytical manipulations are performed by using the computer algebraic software MACSYMA, while the response statistical moments are determined by numerical integration by using the IMSL software DVERK. The Gaussian closure solution gives a quasi-stationary response in the form of fluctuations between two limits. However, the non-Gaussian closure results in a strict stationary response. The general trend of the nonlinear interaction takes the form of energy exchange between the interacted modes when the system is internally tuned.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The linear and non-linear random modal interactions of a two degree-of-freedom aeroelastic structure are examined by using the Fokker-Planck equation approach. A general differential equation describing the evolution of the response moments is derived for any moment order. For the case of linear modal interaction this differential equation is found to constitute a closed set of moment equations. The stationary response is determined for various system parameters. It is found that the linear interaction results in a suppression of one mode when the uncoupled frequencies of the structure are close to each other. For the case of nonlinear modal (known as autoparametric) interaction the differential equation of the response moments forms an infinite coupled set of equations which are closed via two closure schemes. These are the Gaussian and non-Gaussian closure leads to 69 differential equations in the first four orders of response moments. The two sets are solved by numerical integration. Keywords: Equations of motion; Coefficients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the sixth edition. It is suitable for one or more courses at the advanced undergraduate level and graduate level to cover the field of aeroelasticity. It is also of value to the research scholar and engineering practitioner who wish to understand the state of the art in the field. This book covers the basics of aeroelasticity or the dynamics of fluid–structure interaction. While the field began in response to the rapid development of aviation, it has now expanded into many branches of engineering and scientific disciplines and treats physical phenomena from aerospace engineering, bioengineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering in addition to drawing the attention of mathematicians and physicists. The basic questions addressed are dynamic stability and response of fluid structural systems as revealed by both linear and nonlinear mathematical models and correlation with experiment. The use of scaled models and full-scale experiments and tests play a key role where theory is not considered sufficiently reliable.

Book excerpt: This monograph presents the state of the art in aeroservoelastic (ASE) modeling and analysis and develops a systematic theoretical and computational framework for use by researchers and practicing engineers. It is the first book to focus on the mathematical modeling of structural dynamics, unsteady aerodynamics, and control systems to evolve a generic procedure to be applied for ASE synthesis. Existing robust, nonlinear, and adaptive control methodology is applied and extended to some interesting ASE problems, such as transonic flutter and buffet, post-stall buffet and maneuvers, and flapping flexible wing. The author derives a general aeroservoelastic plant via the finite-element structural dynamic model, unsteady aerodynamic models for various regimes in the frequency domain, and the associated state-space model by rational function approximations. For more advanced models, the full-potential, Euler, and Navier-Stokes methods for treating transonic and separated flows are also briefly addressed. Essential ASE controller design and analysis techniques are introduced to the reader, and an introduction to robust control-law design methods of LQG/LTR and H2/H∞ synthesis is followed by a brief coverage of nonlinear control techniques of describing functions and Lyapunov functions. Practical and realistic aeroservoelastic application examples derived from actual experiments are included throughout. Aeroservoelasiticity fills an important gap in the aerospace engineering literature and will be a valuable guide for graduate students and advanced researchers in aerospace engineering, as well as professional engineers, technicians, and test pilots in the aircraft industry and laboratories.

Book excerpt: Introductory Guide on the Design of Aerospace Structures Developed from a course taught at Concordia University for more than 20 years, Principles of Aeroelasticity utilizes the author’s extensive teaching experience to immerse undergraduate and first-year graduate students into this very specialized subject. Ideal for coursework or self-study, this detailed examination introduces the concepts of aeroelasticity, describes how aircraft lift structures behave when subjected to aerodynamic loads, and finds its application in aerospace, civil, and mechanical engineering. The book begins with a discussion on static behavior, and moves on to static instability and divergence, dynamic behavior leading up to flutter, and fluid structure interaction problems. It covers classical approaches based on low-order aerodynamic models and provides a rationale for adopting certain aeroelastic models. The author describes the formulation of discrete models as well as continuous structural models. He also provides approximate methods for solving divergence, flutter, response and stability of structures, and addresses non-aeroelastic problems in other areas that are similar to aeroelastic problems. Topics covered include: The fundamentals of vibration theory Vibration of single degree of freedom and two degrees of freedom systems Elasticity in the form of an idealized spring element Repetitive motion Flutter phenomenon Classical methods, Rayleigh-Ritz techniques, Galerkin’s technique, influential coefficient methods, and finite element methods Unsteady aerodynamics, and more

Book excerpt: A principal goal of the Air Force research program is to develop accurate, reliable and efficient computational models so that laboratory and flight tests may be decreased and/or the results of such tests may be more effective in reducing design and production costs of new Air Force systems. Key challenges in achieving this goal are the uncertainties that exist in computational models. These uncertainties may be a result of the limitations of the mathematical model in representing physical reality, the numerical uncertainties that arise in obtaining (computational) solitions to these models, and/or the uncertainties in the parameters that enter into such models. Examples of each of these uncertainties have been studied for nonlinear aeroelastic systems and the computational results compared with experiment. New highly computationally efficient methods have been developed.
