Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CLIFFORD K. HOAND STEPHEN W. WEBB Sandia National Laboratories, P. O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, NM 87185, USA Gas and vapor transport in porous media occur in a number of important applications includingdryingofindustrialandfoodproducts,oilandgasexploration,environm- tal remediation of contaminated sites, and carbon sequestration. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and processes of gas and vapor transport in porous media allows models to be used to evaluate and optimize the performance and design of these systems. In this book, gas and vapor are distinguished by their available states at stan- ? dard temperature and pressure (20 C, 101 kPa). If the gas-phase constituent can also exist as a liquid phase at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , water, ethanol, toluene, trichlorothylene), it is considered a vapor. If the gas-phase constituent is non-condensable at standard temperature and pressure (e. g. , oxygen, carbon di- ide, helium, hydrogen, propane), it is considered a gas. The distinction is important because different processes affect the transport and behavior of gases and vapors in porous media. For example, mechanisms specific to vapors include vapor-pressure lowering and enhanced vapor diffusion, which are caused by the presence of a g- phase constituent interacting with its liquid phase in an unsaturated porous media. In addition, the “heat-pipe” exploits isothermal latent heat exchange during evaporation and condensation to effectively transfer heat in designed and natural systems.

Book excerpt: Gas condensate reservoirs are one of the viable and less carbon-intensive natural gas systems for meeting the ever-increasing global energy demand. Complex fluid characteristics exhibited by gas condensate systems and the event of retrograde condensation as reservoir pressure depletes facilitate a multiphase flow regime. Unlike in the case of a dry-gas reservoir, the adaptation of Production Data Analysis (PDA) practices to model multiphase flow in gas condensate systems cannot be understated. The strong non-linearity of pressure-dependent fluid properties and a lack of a complete saturation-pressure relationship introduce inherent complications for PDA practices in such complex natural gas systems. Hence, this research aims to review a reliable and robust analytical modeling technique for multiphase flow and production data analysis in boundary-dominated gas condensate systems to assist in proffering effective production, development, and management strategies. A pivotal area of this research emphasizes a requisite to improve the current state-of-the-art approaches for multiphase pseudo-pressure calculations through the implementation of a reliable saturation-pressure relationship proposed by Tran (2022). The commonly used Constant Volume Depletion (CVD) test data fails to capture the actual behavior of multiphase flow in gas condensate systems. To corroborate Tran's (2022) methodology, further investigation into modeling multiphase flow and the incorporation of the improved saturation-pressure relationship also known as the Rescaled CVD method into the Unified Density-based approach for appropriate resource estimations, gas-oil ratio predictions, and flow rate predictions for multiple gas condensate case studies are presented in this study. Overall, the UDB-Rescaled CVD method demonstrates higher predictive accuracy and precision for a wide range of boundary-dominated gas condensate systems set to produce under constant and variable bottomhole pressure schedules.

Book excerpt: Numerical analysis is a powerful mathematical tool that focuses on finding approximate solutions to mathematical problems where analytical methods fail to produce exact solutions. Many numerical methods have been developed and enhanced through the years for this purpose, across many classes, with some methods proven to be well-suited for solving certain equations. The key in numerical analysis is, then, choosing the right method or combination of methods for the problem at hand, with the least cost and highest accuracy possible (while maintaining efficiency). In this thesis, we consider the approximate solution of a class of 2-dimensional differential equations, with random coefficients. We aim, through using a combination of Krylov methods, preconditioners, and multigrid ideas to implement an algorithm that offers low cost and fast convergence for approximating solutions to these problems. In particular, we propose to use a "training" phase in the development of a preconditioner, where the first few linear systems in a sequence of similar problems are used to drive adaptation of the preconditioning strategy for subsequent problems. Results show that our algorithms are successful in effectively decreasing the cost of solving the model problem from the cost shown using a standard AMG-preconditioned CG method.
