This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work concerns the stochastic mechanics and reliability of composite laminates. The reliability of notched composite laminates is evaluated based on the average stress over a certain characteristic distance from the notch edge and the strength of the corresponding un-notched laminate. In the present work the perturbation in the radius of the hole is modeled using a hypotrochoid variation and further, the location of the hole centre is modeled using a Gaussian random variable. In order to achieve a design with a required reliability and safety, (i) the stress analysis of the notched laminate has to be conducted based on a stochastic approach, (ii) the strength distribution and its probabilistic parameters have to be determined based on a number of tests, and (iii) the reliability analysis has to be conducted. Two-dimensional stochastic finite element analyses of notched symmetric cross-ply [0/90] 4 s and angle-ply [02/±45] 2 s composite laminates are conducted. A comprehensive experimental investigation is carried out to determine the strength values of the laminates subjected to tensile load. Average stress criterion is used to predict the characteristic length values of the laminates. The distributions of the strength and characteristic length of laminates with symmetric cross-ply [0/90] 4 s configuration are determined by testing 25 samples of notched and 25 samples of un-notched laminates. In a similar manner, tests on angle-ply laminate [02/±45] 2 s are conducted. Stochastic simulation is performed on the laminates by subjecting them to uniaxial, biaxial, shear and bending loads. Probabilistic moments of the stress parameters that are of interest are found out for the so-called controlled hole and uncontrolled hole laminates. The reliability indices for the two laminate configurations are calculated by combining the stochastic finite element analysis and the test results.

Book excerpt: The present thesis contains the results of testing, stochastic process modeling and reliability analysis of symmetric tapered laminates with pre-set delaminations. Two laminate configurations, called lay-up A and lay-up B are considered. Lay-up A is a [0/±45/0/(±45) 3 /±45/0 7] s laminate that is reduced to a [0/±45/0/±45/0 7] s laminate and lay-up B is a [0 7 /±45/0/(±45) 3 /±45/0] s laminate that is reduced to a [0 7 /±45/0/±45/0] s laminate. Two locations of pre-set delaminations, at the center of the core layer and in between belt and core layers in the thin side of lay-up A tapered laminate, are considered. Two loading conditions, (a) cyclic tension-compression loading and (b) cyclic tension-compression loading with 85% over tension load, are applied for the fatigue tests in the present thesis. A stochastic approach to model the fatigue damage development based on the test data which has been developed and presented in an existing work is used in the present thesis. The Markov Chain is used to represent the fatigue damage accumulation in this approach, and the differences between the true probability distribution and the unconditional probability distribution (or predicted unconditional probability distribution) of the fatigue response parameter are determined by using different methodologies, that are, the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM) and, Gaussian (single and bivariate) probability distribution and joint probability density function. The test data on the fatigue response parameter are analyzed based on the reliability function, hazard rate and failure density function.

Book excerpt: In the thesis, a combined experimental and stochastic finite element analysis methodology that can incorporate the material property variabilities and based on these, predict the stochastic characteristics of the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and the Strain Energy Release Rate (G) of composite laminates, is developed. Using this methodology, the probabilistic fracture analysis of laminated composites is performed. The material and geometric properties of the laminate are described in terms of homogeneous two-dimensional spatial stochastic fields and random variables that are established based on material property tests. In the finite element formulation, the elasticity matrix for the laminate is obtained based on the laminate theory. This matrix, in contrast to the deterministic finite element analysis, will be a stochastic matrix that has different values at different Gauss point locations within the same element. The fracture behavior of the laminate is quantified through the two parameters, Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) and Energy Release Rate (ERR). A formulation for determining the reliability of composite laminates based on the probabilistic characteristics of stress intensity factor and that of the fracture toughness, is described. Different types of orthotropic laminates are analyzed.

Book excerpt: Reliability-based design simulations often use the traditional, crude Monte Carlo method as a sampling procedure for predicting failure. The combination of designing for very small failure probabilities and (~10−8 - 10−6) and using computational expensive finite element models, makes traditional Monte Carlo very costly. The separable Monte Carlo method, which is an extension of conditional expectation, takes advantage of statistical independence of the limit state random variables of the response and capacity for improved accuracy in reliability calculations. The separation of response and capacity sampling enables flexible sample sizes, permitting low samples of the more expensive component (usually the response). In turn, this motivates the beneficial reallocation of uncertainty by reformulating the limit state. The variance estimator was derived for separable Monte Carlo and three example problems were used to compare the Monte Carlo methods.

Book excerpt: This book first provides a systematic and thorough introduction to the classical laminate theory for composite materials based on the theory for plane elasticity elements and classical (shear-rigid) plate elements. The focus is on unidirectional lamina which can be described based on orthotropic constitutive equations and their composition to layered laminates. In addition to the elastic behavior, failure is investigated based on the maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, and the Tsai-Wu criteria. The solution of the fundamental equations of the classical laminate theory is connected with extensive matrix operations, and many problems require in addition iteration loops. Thus, a classical hand calculation of related problems is extremely time consuming. In order to facilitate the application of the classical laminate theory, we decided to provide a Python-based computational tool, the so-called Composite Laminate Analysis Tool (CLAT) to easily solve some standard questions from the context of fiber-reinforced composites. The tool runs in any standard web browser and offers a user-friendly interface with many post-processing options. The functionality comprises stress and strain analysis of lamina and laminates, derivation of off-axis elastic properties of lamina, and the failure analysis based on different criteria.

Book excerpt: A typical approach to treat composite materials, which are composed of layered unidirectional lamina, is the so-called classical laminate theory (CLT). This theory is based on the theory for plane elasticity elements and classical (shear-rigid) plate elements under the assumption of orthotropic constitutive equations. The solution of the fundamental equations of the classical laminate theory is connected with extensive matrix operations and many problems require in addition iteration loops. This two-dimensional approach and the underlying advanced continuum mechanical modeling might be very challenging for some students, particularly at universities of applied sciences. Thus, a reduced approach, the so-called simplified classical laminate theory (SCLT), has been recently proposed. The idea was to use solely isotropic one-dimensional elements, i.e., a superposition of bar and beam elements, to introduce the major calculation steps of the classical laminate theory. Understanding this simplified theory is much easier and the final step it to highlight the differences when moving to the general two-dimensional case. This monograph first provides a systematic and thorough introduction to the simplified laminate theory based on the theory for bars and classical beam plate elements. The focus is on stacking of isotropic layers to simplified laminates. In addition to the elastic behavior, failure is investigated based on the maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, and the Tsai-Wu criteria. We provide a Python-based computational tool, the so-called Composite Laminate Analysis Tool (CLAT 1D) to easily solve some standard questions from the context of fiber reinforced composites. The tool runs in any standard web browser and offers a user-friendly interface with many post-processing options. The functionality comprises stress and strain analysis of simplified lamina and laminates and the failure analysis based on different criteria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer-matrix tapered composite laminates with internal taper are considered in the present thesis. Appropriate finite element models for the tapered laminates are developed using quadratic isoparametric elements. Both the rectangular and triangular isoparametric elements are employed in the model in order to obtain accurate solutions. Singularity elements are used to model the vicinity of the crack tip in the laminate. Appropriate computational methods including the displacement extrapolation method and virtual crack extension method are employed for the determination of the following fracture parameters: stress intensity factor, energy release rate, and J-integral. In order to determine the response to random excitation, the normal mode method is employed in conjunction with the finite element method. The associated computer programs are developed using FORTRAN ® and MATLAB ® programming languages. The fracture behavior and the dynamic response to stationary random excitation of different types of internally tapered laminate are investigated based on the finite element model. The locations of delamination initiation are predicted based on the stress analysis results and the Von Mises failure criterion. The energy release rates and J-integral values corresponding to the delamination at the critical location of the laminate are computed. The effects of taper angle and the laminate configuration on the fracture behavior and the random vibration of the laminate are determined. The probability of failure is then calculated and the use of this information in determining the location of failure initiation is demonstrated.
