Book excerpt: Green supply chain models and carbon emissions tracking have become increasingly prevalent in the supply chain management literature and in corporate strategies. In this dissertation, carbon emissions are integrated into cost-based freight transportation models that can be used to assist operations and supply chain managers in solving the "last mile problem". The models presented herein serve to provide the decision maker with choices on which strategy to implement depending on the strength of the management's desire to reduce carbon emissions. By comparing the optimal solutions that result from using different delivery strategies, this research provides a basis for evaluating an appropriate trade-off between transportation cost and carbon emissions. This dissertation contributes to academia and the literature in several ways. The discrete supply chain models provide a method for decision makers to analyze and compare the lowest cost delivery option with the lowest carbon footprint option. The stochastic last mile framework that is introduced provides a method for researchers and practitioners to measure the expected carbon footprint and compare probabilistic costs, carbon emissions, delivery mileage, and delivery times in order to make decisions regarding the most appropriate delivery strategy. This framework is then applied to two different problem settings. The first involves optimizing a delivery fleet to produce the lowest total cost with carbon emissions integrated into the total cost equation. The second compares the carbon footprint resulting from last mile delivery (ecommerce retailing involving a central store delivering to end customers) to customer pick up (conventional shopping at a brick-and-mortar retail location); the break-even number of customers for carbon emissions equivalence provides a basis for companies to determine the environmental impact of last mile delivery and to determine the feasibility of last mile delivery based on objectives related to minimizing carbon emissions.

All products have a life cycle which can be classified into four discrete stages: introduction, growth, maturity and decline.Depending on the product life cycle phases, and based on a thorough analysis of the different supply chain potential actors, this study aims to establish mathematical models to design an efficient supply chain network. Three main models have been developed in this thesis. The first proposed model aims to design a product-driven supply chain with a minimal total cost, taking into consideration the evaluation of the different potential actors effectiveness, according to several criteria (cost, quality, innovation, quality service, timely delivery, ...).A second model was developed to design of a sustainable supply chain network, taking into account the product life cycle. In this model, three different objectives at the time were considered, namely, an economic objective, an environmental objective and a social objective.In the two previous models, we have assumed that the product has a classical life cycle. However, in the reality this is not always the case. Indeed, some products have very atypical life cycles, whose curves are very different from the classical one. To tackle this problem, in the third part of this thesis, we propose a stochastic model to design a robust supply chain network, taking into account the different product life cycle scenarios.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we consider the logistics network of a multi-echelon multimodal supply chain with multiple products and components taking economic and environmental sustainability, and shipment consolidation into consideration. Procedures for calculating and using both the water and carbon footprints of the network as metrics for its environmental sustainability are also explored. The supply chain logistics network is modelled as a Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) and then tested on randomly generated but realistic test instances. The effects of shipment consolidation on the economic and environmental cost of operations are analysed with results showing that consolidation decreases the supply chain (SC) cost especially when the distance between the shipper and receiver is significant. Considering that in reality, some of the parameters of supply chain network models might be stochastic, experiments are carried out with the designed MILP model having its demand parameter as stochastic. With the continual digitalization of supply chain processes leading to the automatic generation of data, machine learning (ML) has evolved as a methodology with the potential to help optimize stochastic models with its increasingly accurate predictions of future occurrences due to the continuous innovation of new algorithms. ML approaches to predicting stochastic parameters using historical data are evaluated in comparison to the more traditional stochastic programming approaches over multiple prediction periods. The three ML models utilized, Attention CNN-LSTM (AC-LSTM), Attention ConvLSTM (ACV-LSTM) and an ensemble of both models using Support Vector Regression (Ensemble-SVR), performed significantly better than the stochastic programming approaches considered (Simple recourse programming and Chance-constrained programming) in all scenarios. The MILP models using the predictions from the ML algorithms obtained the highest value of stochastic solution (VSS) and had the lowest expected value of perfect information (EVPI). This makes a case for the continued integration of ML prediction methodologies into stochastic optimization modelling.

Abstract: In the highly competitive market of the 21stcentury, organizations face the persistent challenge to improve supply chain efficiency, allowing products to move more quickly at lower cost. Unfortunately, some ostensible improvements also increase the supply chain's vulnerability to uncertainties (e.g., uncertain customer demand and capacity), resulting in higher risk. Hence, there is a growing realization that the impact of risk to supply chains should be analyzed. Conditional Value at Risk (CVaR) is one of the newest method utilized to measure such risk. This study develops a set of mathematical models to facilitate the analysis of the operating characteristics of a supply chain when its demand and capacity are uncertain involving three supply chain network design problems. The objective is to minimize the expected operating cost and its corresponding CVaR. The first problem focuses on facility location and distribution planning. The second problem extends the first one by incorporating procurement and manufacturing decisions on the basis of a time-expanded network. In order to describe the situation where uncertainties are realized over time, the third problem extends the second one to a multi-stage (more than two stage).For each problem, both a basic model and a sample-based model are formulated. The basic model can be approximated accurately by the sample-based model of an adequate sample size. The first sample-based model can be first reformulated to a set-covering problem, then decomposed into a master problem and a number of column generation pricing-problems. Then, a hybrid algorithm based upon Multi-population Particle Swarm Optimization and Tabu Search (MPSO-TS) is proposed to solve the pricing-problems. The computation time of MPSO-TS rises proportionately with increases in sample size. Therefore, a tailor-made simulation framework based on Sample Average Approximation (SAA) integrating the MPSO-TS aided column generation algorithm is constructed to solve the basic model (also referred to the corresponding sample-based model of an adequate sample size). The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed methodologies are tested on a set of randomly generated problems. In the second problem, the sample-based model can be decomposed into a master problem and a sub-problem based on the Benders Decomposition (BD) scheme. To improve the convergence behavior of the standard BD algorithm, three accelerating strategies are utilized: adding logistical constraints, cutting disaggregation, and applying local branching (LB) strategy. Similar to the first problem, a tailor-made simulation framework based on SAA integrating with the accelerated BD algorithm is constructed to solve the basic model. Results obtained from the experiments using randomly generated test problems show the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methodologies. Since the structure of the third sample-based model indicates that no exact solutions can be achieved, a corresponding model is developed under the mean criterion. Two simulation methods relying on a rolling horizon approach are proposed by using the accelerated BD algorithm to solve both these models. A lower bound analysis is also proposed to assist in the performance evaluation process. The superior effectiveness of these methodologies is validated by a set of randomly generated test problems.
