It is based upon the idea that the student should be taught to be a thinking, acting being, rather than an automaton, performing certain processes by rule. As a branch of mathematics, bookkeeping should train the reasoning powers, and be productive of acuteness, method, accuracy, and speed. As a department of political economy, bookkeeping should direct the thought of the pupil to those great human activities in trade, commerce and accumulation which are such important elements in the happiness and well-being of the world. Mathematics is generally regarded as an abstruse and theoretical subject, yet it is applied in all the business activities of life. Too often men of high scholastic attainments discover that they lack the first principles of business success. They have given no attention to business customs and usages, and are helpless in their business affairs. Bookkeeping combines much of business usage with the application of mathematical principles, and gives an opportunity to the teacher to shape to a very great extent the future business tendencies of the student. No one in any walk of life can afford to be without a record of his business dealings. Books to a business are as necessary as chart and compass to a sailor. He who does without a systematic set of books is unwise, and the day will probably come when he will regret most bitterly his lack of foresight and business prudence. The author believes that a study of business principles is a moral training, as great if not greater than much which is popularly so considered. Right relations between individuals lead to true moral insight and right moral dispositions. It is a deplorable fact that it is easier to find teachers for the young and preachers for the people than to find men who, in financial matters, are reliable and trustworthy. Practical honesty is too rare a virtue, and the worst of it is that the classes who stand highest in the public esteem as exemplars of the moral virtues are often the most lax and uncertain in their ideas of duty to their fellow men in matters of dollars and cents, and too often it is very hard to get them to pay their current bills, and harder yet to arouse a sense of responsibility for their older debts. Too many people called good, and who really are good in many respects, have a way of unconsciously regarding borrowed money or goods purchased on credit as a distinct gain instead of the basis of a solemn obligation. The teacher of bookkeeping has an opportunity to teach honesty without the students knowing it, for he who is systematic, accurate and prompt is quite likely to be industrious, and the industrious are seldom dishonest. Most American boys begin and end life by spending their earnings as they go. Our boys, when placed side by side with the German, the Jew and other immigrant boys, are too often pushed to one side in the struggle. Hence foreigners pronounce us a spendthrift nation, and the evidence seems to support their assertion. It is fully time now that the schoolboy should be taught and made to understand that it is not what a man earns, but what he saves, that will raise him to a competency. The subject as presented in the following pages has been simplified. Non-essentials have been omitted. This makes it possible to do every thing given with great thoroughness. Thorough understanding on the part of the pupil and the doing of his work as a result of his thought is the goal. In chapter one, when the pupils are young, it is a good plan to work out the various points step by step, using school currency and a hat to illustrate the transaction. It is often helpful to use boxes, desk drawers, or similar receptacles to visualize the account, placing on the side of them a sheet of paper with the account name on it. Then using school currency and familiar objects, go through a few transactions, keeping track of the values involved as indicated in the last sentence on page 1. Analyze the accounts thus built up as on page 2. Emphasize the cost feature (page show that in order to get something into one receptacle (account) something must be supplied from another receptacle (account). The getting of a value costs the giving of another. The giving of a value supplies another (page Emphasize the fact that an account is a place for keeping track of a class or kind of value and that it will answer that purpose when kept in a book the same as when nailed on a box, bin, etc. Such or similar illustrations will often help the pupil to see that each account is a record of a certain kind of value and that it has definite meaning. The majority of pupils that fail in bookkeeping fail because they do not read with understanding or they are very inaccurate in their figuring. It is worth while to know your text well enough to be able to refer a pupil to the exact place where he will find the point that he has failed to master. (the index will help greatly in this.) It is as necessary in bookkeeping to teach pupils to read and understand as to select debits and credits. Sometimes it is wise to read a troublesome sentence or paragraph for them or with them. Many details of routine brought out will be omitted by the pupil unless you refer him back to the instruction until the detail becomes a habit. There is no good reason why the teaching of bookkeeping, especially in the beginning course, should differ so much from the teaching of other subjects. In other subjects, we do not attempt to teach the pupil at once all the operations necessary to give him a complete understanding of the subject. We teach him an operation or step at a time. The author believes that teachers and pupils alike will welcome a text in bookkeeping that takes up one operation at a time, or a new subject, and explains it before undertaking another. Each subject is well illustrated and sufficient exercises are given to enable the pupil to learn one step before studying the next. The development and illustration of a new subject in practically every chapter is a feature that should appeal to every teacher of the subject. The expression, "learn by doing," has come to mean little more than routine, mechanical work without much thought. Skill in the mechanical work must be developed by a sufficient number of exercises and sets, but that is simply one side of the study of bookkeeping. The author believes that if bookkeeping is to maintain its place as a study in the secondary school curriculum on a par with other subjects, the thought side must be emphasized. It must not be simply an incidental matter. Bookkeeping, as a study, should not depend on its practical value alone for its standing. To develop the thought side of bookkeeping, frequent class recitations are necessary. The arrangement of the text is especially adapted for this purpose. In beginning with the study of cash, the author believes he is beginning with a subject in which the pupil is naturally interested.
