Book excerpt: Stereotype threat (fear of confirming a negative group stereotype that in turn can inhibit academic performance) has been implicated in the gender gap observed in the field of mathematics. Even though stereotype threat depresses women's performance, there has been much research reporting various interventions that ameliorate its negative effects. The current study investigated stereotype threat specifically in statistics--an unexplored area in the research literature --and the alleviating effects of self-affirmation. Participants in three conditions (control, stereotype threat, stereotype threat + affirmation) completed a statistics test. In both stereotype threat conditions participants were given a verbal prime to induce stereotype threat, but only the stereotype threat + affirmation condition was given the affirmation task. The predictions that stereotype threat would depress women's statistics performance and that self-affirmation would minimize stereotype threat were not supported. How a performance expectation relates to a successful stereotype threat prime was discussed as are study limitations and directions for future research.

It is now common to see in elementary school, high school, and university classrooms, not to mention boardrooms and factory floors, a mixture of ethnicities, races, genders, and religious affiliations. But these changes in academic and economic opportunities have not directly translated into an elimination of group disparities in academic performance, career opportunities, and levels of advancement. Standard explanations for these disparities, which are vehemently debated in the scientific community and popular press, range from the view that women and minorities are genetically endowed with inferior abilities to the view that members of these demographic groups are products of environments that frustrate the development of the skills needed for success. Although these explanations differ along a continuum of nature vs. nurture, they share in common a presumption that a large chunk of our population lacks the potential to achieve academic and career success.In contrast to intractable factors like biology or upbringing, the research summarized in this book suggests that factors in one's immediate situation play a critical yet underappreciated role in temporarily suppressing the intellectual performance of women and minorities, creating an illusion of group differences in ability. Research conducted over the course of the last fifteen years suggests the mere existence of cultural stereotypes that assert the intellectual inferiority of these groups creates a threatening intellectual environment for stigmatized individuals - a climate where anything they say or do is interpreted through the lens of low expectations. This stereotype threat can ultimately interfere with intellectual functioning and academic engagement, setting the stage for later differences in educational attainment, career choice, and job advancement.

Worrell, Chair In this study, I examined the effectiveness of a self-affirmation intervention (Cohen et al., 2006) with a sample of African American high school students who were at risk for academic failure. Participants consisted of 47 African-American students from 3 different high schools. Unlike previous research, results indicated that students who received the self-affirmation did not earn higher GPAs at the end of the first semester. Students who received the self-affirmation intervention also did not feel more psychologically engaged within the academic environment. Reasons for these disparate findings in comparison to previous research are discussed. Implications for stereotype threat theory and what type of students can benefit from this intervention are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Women completing math tasks under stereotype threat underperform and experience increased negative outcomes compared to women under no threat and men. While previous interventions for stereotype threat focus on self-affirmation or role models as a means to reduce the effects of stereotype threat, the current study examines whether using a strategic mindset to increase self-reflection mitigates the negative effects of stereotype threat on women in math. Undergraduate women (N=149) were randomly assigned to read an article about the benefits of having a strategic mindset or taking cold showers. Participants were then randomly assigned to a stereotype threat condition (women perform worse than men on a modular arithmetic task), or a no threat condition (men and women perform similarly on a modular arithmetic task). Participants under stereotype threat expected to perform worse on the task than women under no threat but participants' actual performance on the modular arithmetic task across all conditions did not differ. Strategic mindset interacted with stereotype threat such that women under no threat experienced less state anxiety in the control condition compared to those in the strategic mindset condition. Future studies should investigate how cognition relates to stereotype threat to determine if a strategic mindset is a viable solution to reduce stereotype threat or if a different cognitive intervention is needed.

At the heart of stereotype threat effects is the expectation of negative performance based on group membership or a currently held role. Thus, an integrated, consensually known stereotypic construct is not necessary for the effect of threat to occur; rather, all that is required is for there to be differential expectations for performance based on role position. In three experiments we find the typical effects of stereotype threat whenever differential expectations for performance exist based on the roles of negotiators. In addition, we demonstrate that negotiator roles can indeed be threatening by eliminating the effects via self-affirmation.
