Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is of two kinds. We know a subject ourselves, or we know where we can find information on it Samuel Johnson, 18 April, 1775* Sterols are among the most studied groups of natural products with interest commencing in the 19th century and running to the present. Investigations have embraced the refinement of separation procedures, the development of new analytical techniques and instrumentation for structure elucidation, the unravelling of biosynthetic mechanisms, the determination of the physiological functions of sterols, and the role they play in health and disease. In the past 20-30 years interest in the medical implications of sterol biochemistry, studies on the sterols of plants, algae and fungi, and the identification of the many unusual sterols from marine organisms have proceeded in parallel and somewhat independently. Although the motiva tion and goals for the various lines of investigation have differed widely the researchers working in each of these areas have contributed a wealth of knowledge to the literature relating to the analysis of sterols and many diverse new sterols have been discovered. We conceived this book as a modest attempt to bring together some of this literature in the hope that it may be helpful to newcomers to sterol research. We had originally intended to produce a 'handbook' outlining in detail the protocols to be followed for sterol extraction, chromatography, NMR analysis, etc. in order to identify the components of a sterol mixture.

Book Synopsis Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 1 by : David Norris
Download or read book Hormones and Reproduction of Vertebrates, Volume 1 written by David Norris and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of volumes represents a comprehensive and integrated treatment of reproduction in vertebrates from fishes of all sorts through mammals. It is designed to provide a readable, coordinated description of reproductive basics in each group of vertebrates as well as an introduction to the latest trends in reproductive research and our understanding of reproductive events. Whereas each chapter and each volume is intended to stand alone as a review of that topic or vertebrate group, respectively, the volumes are prepared so as to provide a thorough topical treatment across the vertebrates. Terminology has been standardized across the volumes to reduce confusion where multiple names exist in the literature, and a comprehensive glossary of these terms and their alternative names is provided. A complete, essential and up to date reference for research scientists working on vertebrate hormones and reproduction - and on animlals as models in human reproductive research Covers the endocrinology, neuroendocrinology, physiology, behaviour and anatomy of vertebrate reproduction Structured coverage of the major themes for all five vertebrate groups allows a consistent treatment for all Special chapters elaborate on features specific to individual vertebrate groups and to comparative aspects, similarities and differences between them

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Cell Signaling is a comprehensive work covering all aspects of intracellular signal processing, including extra/intracellular membrane receptors, signal transduction, gene expression/translation, and cellular/organotypic signal responses. The subject matter has been divided into five main parts (each of which is headed by a recognized expert in the field):* Initiation: Extracellular and Membrane Events* Transmission: Effectors and Cytosolic Events * Nuclear Responses: Gene Expression and Translation* Events in Intracellular Compartments* Cell-Cell and Cell-Matrix Interactions Covered in extensive detail, these areas will appeal to a broad, cross-disciplinary audience interested in the structure, biochemistry, molecular biology and pathology of cellular effectors. Tabular and well-illustrated, the Handbook will serve as an in-depth reference for this complex and evolving field.Tabular and well illustrated, the Handbook will serve as an in-depth reference for this complex and evolving field!* Contains approximately 470 articles* Provides well-organized sections on each essential area in signaling* Includes discussion on everything from ligand/receptor interactions to organ/organism responses* Extremely user-friendly

Download or read book The Receptors written by P. Michael Conn and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Receptors, Volume IV deals with receptors for intracellular hormones, estrogen, and sex steroids as well as for dopamine, cholecystokinin, and corticotropin. The role of surface recognition receptors in disease is also discussed, along with receptors for plant auxin action and auxin transport. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with a detailed account of the ?-adrenergic receptor-coupled adenylate cyclase and the reconstitution of the functional interactions of its various purified components. The discussion then turns to the mechanism of action of steroid and thyroid hormones and how abnormalities in their receptors lead to disease; nuclear location of estrogen receptors; and the biochemistry of the fungal sex steroid receptors as well as the use of Achlya as a model system for the study of the mechanism of action of steroid hormones in general. Subsequent chapters focus on dopamine receptors; cholecystokinin receptor; corticotropin receptors; and the search for receptors that mediate sweetness. The book concludes with an analysis of endocrine receptors on lymphocytes and the integration of endocrine and immune systems, with emphasis on large granular lymphocytes. This monograph will be a valuable resource for students and practitioners in fields ranging from cell biology and biochemistry to physiology, endocrinology, and pharmacology.
