Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal series, first edited by Ernest Eliel, responsible for some of the major advances in stereochemistry and the winner of the ACS Priestley Medal in 1996, provides coverage of the major developments of the field of stereochemistry. The scope of this series is broadly defined to encompass all fields of chemical and biological sciences that are founded on molecular and supramolecular interactions. Insofar as chemical, physical, and biological properties are determined by molecular shape and structure, the importance of stereochemistry is fundamental to and consequential for all natural sciences. Topics in Stereochemistry serves as a multidisciplinary series that enriches all of chemistry. Aimed at advanced students, university professors and teachers as well as researchers in pharmaceutical, agricultural, biotechnological, polymer, materials, and fine chemical industries, Topics in Stereochemistry publishes definitive and scholarly reviews in stereochemistry and has long been recognized as the gold standard reference work in this field. Covering the effect of chirality on all aspects of molecular interaction from the fundamental physical chemical properties of molecules and their molecular physics to the application of chirality in new areas such as its applications in materials science, Topics in Stereochemistry explores a wide variety of properties, both physical and chemical of isomers with a view to their applications in a number of disciplines from biochemistry to materials science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this investigation the addition of hydrogen bromide to 3-methylcyclohexene has been studied in order to see if the theory of hyperconjugation could be extended to include olefins of this type. Since the olefin has an equal number of hydrogens on both carbons carrying the double bond, a mixture of bromides was expected in the addition product. The bromides expected were cis-2- or trans-2-bromomethyl-cyclobexane or a mixture of the isomers and cis-3- or trans-3-bromomethylcyclohexane or a mixture or those isomers. An infrared method of analyzing the addition product was used. To use this method it was necessary to make up known mixtures of the compounds expected in the addition product. In order to prepare some of the isomeric bromides, trans-2- and trans-3-methylcyclohexanol were prepared. Then, because no good methods could be found in the literature for the conversion of isomeric alcohols to isomeric bromides, the alcohols were not used. Instead, the known mixtures for the infrared work were prepared from 2-bromo- and 3-bromo-methylcyclohexanes, both containing unknown amounts of the cis-trans isomers. The 3-methylcyclohexene used in the hydrogen bromide addition was prepared from 3-bromomethylcyclohexene and methylmagnesium iodide. The addition of hydrogen bromide was conducted at 0°C and at room temperature using glacial acetic acid as a solvent. The addition product was obtained in a very low yield and was very difficult to isolate. The product isolated was found to be about 70 per cent 3-bronomethylcyclohexane. Because of the low yield and isolation difficulties, no conclusions could be drawn regarding hyperconjugation.

Book excerpt: The collection of contributions in this volume presents the most up-to-date findings in catalytic hydrogenation. The individual chapters have been written by 36 top specialists each of whom has achieved a remarkable depth of coverage when dealing with his particular topic. In addition to detailed treatment of the most recent problems connected with catalytic hydrogenations, the book also contains a number of previously unpublished results obtained either by the authors themselves or within the organizations to which they are affiliated.Because of its topical and original character, the book provides a wealth of information which will be invaluable not only to researchers and technicians dealing with hydrogenation, but also to all those concerned with homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, organic technology, petrochemistry and chemical engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this edition is the same as that of the first edition, that is, to provide a deeper understanding of the structures of organic compounds and the mechanisms of organic reactions. The level is aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. Our goal is to solidify the student's understanding of basic concepts provided in an introduction to organic chemistry and to fill in much more information and detail, including quantitative information, than can be presented in the first course in organic chemistry. The first three chapters consider the fundamental topics of bonding theory, stereochemistry, and conformation. Chapter 4 discusses the techniques that are used to study and characterize reaction mechanisms. The remaining chapters consider basic reaction types with a broad coverage of substituent effects and stereochemistry being provided so that each reaction can be described in good, if not entirely complete, detail. The organization is very similar to the first edition with only a relative shift in emphasis having been made. The major change is the more general application of qualitative molecular orbital theory in presenting the structural basis of substituent and stereoelectronic effects. The primary research literature now uses molecular orbital approaches very widely, while resonance theory serves as the primary tool for explanation of structural and substituent effects at the introductory level. Our intention is to illustrate the use of both types of interpretation, with the goal of facilitating the student's ability to understand and apply the molecular orbital concepts now widely in use.

The material has been updated to reflect advances in the field since the previous edition, especially in computational chemistry. Part A covers fundamental structural topics and basic mechanistic types. It can stand-alone; together, with Part B: Reaction and Synthesis, the two volumes provide a comprehensive foundation for the study in organic chemistry. Companion websites provide digital models for study of structure, reaction and selectivity for students and exercise solutions for instructors.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Abridged and translated) Organic photochemistry may be divided into three parts: theory which is the province of the physical chemist; instrumentation which requires the skill of both physicist and engineer; and preparation which falls within the sphere of the organic chemist. At one time the same person could cover all three fields without too much difficulty, but this has now become virtually impossible because the disciplines involved have expanded in both breadth and depth; it is there fore timely to have a separate treatment of preparative organic photo chemistry. There appears to be no review of the main photochemical reactions which includes the advances made in recent years available to the organic chemist working in the preparative field. An exception is the excellent "Photochemical Reactions" by C. R. MASSON, V. BOEKELHEIDE and W. A. NoYES JR., published in 1956, which gives a brief review of the reactions which are important in preparative organic photochemistry. The present monograph on the other hand seeks to provide a detailed survey for the chemist; the author does not set out to discuss every photo chemical reaction in the field of organic chemistry but he does include in addition to those of current interest in the preparative field some which are likely to be of interest in the future and which result in single end-products of known composition. The photochemical synthesis of highly polymerized products falls outside the scope of the work.
