Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 2003, I experienced every mother's worse nightmare when our 18-year-old son, Doug, was killed in a car accident. Everything. I thought I knew about God and my reality collided, and it brought me to my knees. The emotional and spiritual turmoil that ensued was greater than I could have ever imagined. This is my testimony of human brokenness and God's faithfulness to heal the broken. Christians are human, and in our humanness, we struggle. Through grief, I've learned to take my struggles to God... all of it... the good, the bad, and the ugly. Feeling torn up inside does not mean we lack faith. It does not make us bad Christians. We are not letting God down. It means we are human and in need of God more. I pray, as you read Our story--mine and God's, you will come to realize God cares about you and what you are going through. I pray you too will experience His grace and mercy and find hope and healing in His embrace. "Praise the Lord; praise God our savior. For each day he carries us in his arms." Psalm 68:19 (NLT) Loreen Link is a wife, mother, grandmother, and follower of Jesus. Her and her husband, Earl, have been married 39 years and live in Pennsylvania. They have four wonderful children and 7 beautiful grandchildren. Loreen holds a minor in Educational Psychology, a Bachelor of Science in Child Development and Family Relations, and a Master of Art in Teaching. She is a licensed youth pastor and has worked many years ministering to youth and their families.

Book excerpt: The first of its kind, this book describes pediatric palliative care in more than 23 countries. Each region in the world is covered and countries included are both resource poor and rich. Authors are multidisciplinary and regarded nationally and internationally in their field. Clinicians, advocates, policymakers, funders, and researchers will learn how programs were developed and implemented in each country. Authors describe children for whom pediatric palliative care is needed and provided for in their country. When applicable, a brief history of pediatric palliative care is included noting especially policy changes and legislative acts. For example, the chapter on Poland describes how pediatric palliative care grew from the Catholic church into a national movement spearheaded by several health care workers. The Pole national spirit that brought them through a change in political regime has also been a driving force in the pediatric palliative care movement. The chapter on South Africa, for example, illustrates how a resource poor country has been able to leverage philanthropic and government funding to make its dream of having an infrastructure of pediatric palliative care a reality. These are just a few examples of the inspiring stories that are included in this book. Readers from countries who wish to start a pediatric palliative care program, or advance an existing program, will learn valuable lessons from others who have faced similar barriers. Introduction and concluding chapters highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the modern pediatric palliative care movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact between a health care professional and a bereaved child can often be very brief, and yet the interaction can have a profound effect on the child, and on the professional themself. This book describes and illustrates the concept of brief therapeutic work with bereaved children and families. Recent years have seen increasing interest in the needs of children facing bereavement, and a corresponding increase in services to support them. Brief Interventions with Bereaved children addresses and explains the theoretical concepts and practical implications behind the idea of brief work with bereaved children and families. Flexible and accessible short term services delivered at the right time underpin the strengths of bereaved children, supporting their recovery rather than pathologising the grief process. The topic of this book is unique in the field, and will appeal to palliative care practitioners, educators and service providers managing scarce resources. The book feautures some distinguished contributors with backgrounds in health care, education, social work and the police, alongside theoretical and practice based chapters from workers in the field of bereavement care for children. There is also a chapter from the service user's perspective.

Book excerpt: This study sought to understand bereavement in an adult woman, after the death of her mother in a hospice setting. A case study method was used with a 52 year old, Caucasian, female subject. An art therapy intervention was utilized that expanded on Ira Progoff's (1992) generalized stepping stone journaling technique. This study addressed a bereaved woman's feelings through the use of "grief stones". The client developed eight mixed media collaged images of feelings she experienced from the time her mother was diagnosed with her illness, through her death and into the present moment. The client gained awareness of her bereavement, acknowledgement of feelings, and created a way to honor her mother through art making.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon when the phone rang. I was idly wondering if I had the will to vacuum. The siren call of the phone offered a reprieve. It was my big brother calling to tell me that my twin brother, Angus, was dead. That’s all he said, ‘He’s dead.’

We all know that, one day, we will have to walk the dark path of grief. There is no way to prepare. There are no neat answers or ways to deal with loss; we stumble as we go. It’s hard and it hurts but, curiously, there are gifts and unexpected kindnesses to be found in the bleak places.

Stumbling Stones offers stories, consolations and understandings of the difficulties that are held within loss. Airdre’s own passage through the wild landscape of grief, the people she met along the way and the tales she heard all offer ways to navigate the tricky path of sorrow and loss, and help shine a light into the darkness.

Airdre Grant, a New Zealander by birth, lives in northern New South Wales, Australia. There she works as an academic at Southern Cross University, where she completed a PhD on the relationship between spirituality and health. Her life has been instinctual rather than carefully planned, less a tale of remarkable success and more of a muddling through.

She can often be found sitting on her verandah above the township of Lismore, contemplating her next move. Since her daughters left home, she finds herself engaged in a subtle, ongoing power struggle with her large ginger cat, Gordon.
