Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 101, Supernova Remnants and Their X-ray Emission, was held on the Island of San Giorgio, Venice, 30 August - 2 September 1982. It was co-sponsored by the National Research Council, Italy, the University of Padua, the Observatory of Padua, and the International Astronomical Union, and was hosted by the Cini Foundation. The contents of this volume show the wide range of disciplines that are involved in supernova remnant research. Many new results were presented, not only from the X-ray observations from the Einstein Observatory but also from observations at optical and radio wavelengths. This has led to the stimulation of theoretical work, much of which attempts to accommodate in a more unified way all of these observations. Research on supernova remnants of all ages was reported. Perhaps the most impressive part of all this work is the way in which observations at all wavelengths have extended well outside the Galaxy to other members of the Local Group and beyond. The Symposium was attended by scientists from 15 countries. Twenty five invited papers and sixty-eight shorter contributions were presented during the 4-day meeting. Thirty-three of these shorter contributions were presented in poster sessions. This volume contains almost all (89) of those contributions. They are followed by discussions which took place after each verbal presentation. Since the availability of the discussions was left to the individual contributors, they are not complete, but those contained in this volume convey some idea of the nature of the exchanges.

In the following ten years this field of research has considerably increased; it seemed, therefore, the right time to organize an international conference on Supernovae taking into account that in the meantime important discoveries, such as the Pulsars, had been made, and new techniques of observation were available. This book contains the proceedings of this conference held at Porto Cesareo (Lecce), Italy, during the period May 7 through 11, 1973. About one hundred participants from eighteen countries attended the conference. It was also the first attempt to hold an international conference in the Salento, the southernmost region of Apulia, in whose capital, Lecce, the newly founded Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lecce is located. Book excerpt: In 1993 we began to consider the possibility of holding a conference on Catacysmic Variables (CVs) at Keele University. There have been several meetings in the area of CVs recently (e. g. Eilat, Abano-Padova, Capetown). However as preparations for the Keele meeting progressed we realized that, while there had been a number of IAU meetings devoted to related and to peripheral topics (such as IAU Colloquium 122 on Classical Novae in 1989, IAU Colloquium 129 on Accretion Disks in 1990), there had been no IAU-sponsored conferences in the area of cataclysmi/: variables (CVs) for a number of years. We felt therefore that the time was ripe to have an IAU meeting de voted to an overview of CVs and related objects and the SOC organized the conference such that there was an emphasis on invited reviews of the most recent advances in the field. The conference covered both CVs and LMXBs and the inter-relations between them. The meeting was held at a time when powerful satellite observatories, and rapid improvements in ground based instrumentation, had led to many advances in both CV and LMXB research. The conference provided a forum to review observations from ASCA, EUVE, ROSAT, Ginga and the recently-refurbished HST. Photo metric, spectroscopic and polarimetric observations of CVs and LMXBs have thrown new light on the distribution of matter and the nature of the stellar components in these systems.

Book excerpt: The rotation and magnetic evolution of stars is examined in detail. Advection of angular momentum by convective plumes is a source of differential rotation, which both reduces the angular momentum loss to stellar winds and spins up the inner regions. This spin up not only affects the rotation of the stellar remnant, but also facilitates the winding of magnetic field lines necessary to amplify a seed field. In radiative regions we demonstrate that an embedded magnetic field can effectively mix angular momentum, as well as sustain coupling with adjacent convective zones. In addition to the resulting angular momentum transport model, we consider a mechanism for rotationally-induced winding of a seed magnetic field. When this mechanism operates at a convective-radiative boundary which moves in a Lagrangian sense towards the convection zone, net helicity is left behind in the newly radiative material. We employ this model of angular momentum transport and helicity deposition in stellar models of a wide range of masses. Our aim is to gauge the effect on the evolution of rotation and the impact on the properties of stellar remnants. In low- and intermediate-mass stars we find a quantitative agreement between the predicted and observed core and surface rotation rates, during both the sub-giant and helium-burning phases. Continuing the evolution to the ejection of the envelope, we are able to reproduce the spin periods and magnetic fields of highly magnetic white dwarf remnants. We find similar success in massive stellar models, by being able to reproduce both the spin periods and magnetic fields of pulsars. And in progenitors of black holes with sufficiently high angular momentum pre-core-collapse, a portion of the infalling material can reach rotational support. This quenches the accretion onto the newly formed black hole, and may result in observable phenomena, such as high energy jets.
