Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamics of Stellar Systems focuses on the theoretical problems in stellar dynamics. The book first offers information on stellar dynamics, including historical development, fundamentals of synthetic method, and value of stellar dynamics. The text discusses the fundamental concepts of stellar statistics. Properties of univariate distribution functions; multivariate distribution functions; and statistical properties of stars are explained. The text then describes the elementary theory of galactic rotation and irregular forces in stellar systems. The text also tackles statistical stellar dynamics of neglecting encounters. Considerations include Boltzmann equation in curvilinear coordinates; importance of using one-valued integrals of the motion; and fundamental differential equation of stellar dynamics. The book also underscores the regular orbit of stars and dynamics of centroids. The text describes the dynamics of spherical stellar and rotating stellar systems. The theory of polytropic spheres; basic equations for spherical systems; masses and rotation of galaxies; and boundaries of galaxies are discussed. The text is highly recommended for readers interested in stellar dynamics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to understand the invisible, look careful at the visible. The Talmud A 'bird's eye' or rather a distant spacecraft's view of the solar system reveals an assembly of planets, terrestrial, giant and Pluto. The orbital motions are in the same sense, counter clockwise, as seen from the north of the general flattened space within which the planetary motions are confined. This state of affairs is corevolving and, more or less, coplanar. The rotations are in the same sense as the revolutions, with the strikiiig exception of Uranus whose sense of rotation is perpendicular to its plane of revolution. As time goes by, most of the planets remain fairly close to a general plane and at no time stray unduly far from it; they remain confined within a rather narrow box or disk with a large 'equatorial' extent. The most distant planet, Pluto, requires a diameter of some 80 astronomical units for the disk. One astronomical unit is the distance of the Earth to the Sun, to be more precise the length of half the major axis of the Earth's slightly elliptical orbit around the Sun, and amounts to nearly 149600000 km.

Book excerpt: In June 1983 the Astronomical Institute of the State University of Groningen, founded by Kapteyn about 100 years ago, celebrated its one-hundredth anniversary. At the suggestion of its Chairman, R.J. Allen, the Kapteyn Institute invited the International Astronomical Union to mark the centenary by holding a Symposium on "The Milky Way Galaxy". The purpose of the Symposium was to review recent progress in the study of our Galaxy, to define current problems, and to explore prospects for future development. The Symposium programme would emphasize the large-scale characteristics of our Galaxy, and highlight both the historical development of our understanding of the Milky Way Galaxy and the importance of studies of external galaxies to this understanding. The Symposium was sponsored by four IAU Commissions: 33 (Structure and Dynamics of the Galactic System), 28 (Galaxies), 34 (Interstellar Matter) and 41 (History of Astronomy). The Scientific Organizing Committee, listed on page xviii, represented a broad range of nationalities and of expertise, including two historians of science. A meeting of the Committee, held during the IAU General Assembly at Patras, provided an excellent opportunity to discuss plan and format of the Symposium, topics and speakers; thereafter, the-Committee was regularly consulted by letter and telephone. IAU Symposium 106 was held at Groningen on 30 May - 3 June 1983, in the new building occupied by the Kapteyn Institute since January 1983. There were about 200 participants, coming from as many as 25 countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light After Dark 1 is a collection of well-established, but up-to-date, science, both from theory and observation, including material from Charles Francis’ published papers. Francis considers arguments, both for and against, two of the most controversial ideas in modern cosmology. Based on established physics, he suggests that unobserved and exotic substances, cold dark matter and dark energy, can be replaced by an improved understanding of the creation of large scale structure following the Big Bang. The structures and the physics of the universe as we observe it are described and placed in the context of Big Bang cosmology. Further topics include large scale structure, entropy and the arrow of time, the creation of the elements, the structure and evolution of galaxies and stars, Newtonian gravity, the structure of the Milky Way and other spiral galaxies, galaxy rotation curves and Friedmann cosmology. This fascinating exploration of the universe as it is revealed by physical theory and the observations of astronomers will appeal to students of astronomy and astrophysicists, and anyone intrigued by the universe in which we live. Written without equations and with helpful explanations of physical concepts, it is accessible to both scientists and non-specialist readers alike.

Book excerpt: The present volume contains papers presented during the Advanced Study Institute on the 'Structure and Evolution of the Galaxy' held under the auspices of the Science Committee, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Lagonissi near Athens, Greece between 8-19 September 1969. Seventeen astronomers from eight countries acted as lecturers in the Institute, which was attended by sixty-three students from twelve countries. All the lectures given in the Institute were included in the volume with the exception of two lectures given by Professor P. van de Kamp on 'Stellar Parallaxes' and 'Objects of Very Low Mass', the manuscripts of which were not submitted in time in order to be considered for publication. It is obviously impossible in a two-weeks course to cover the vast field of the Struc ture and Evolution of the Galaxy in all its aspects. Effort has been made, however, to give the students a general outline of the field. In addition to the lectures ample time was spent in discussions and personal contacts. In order to simplify the publica tion it was felt reasonable, however, not to include the discussions in the present volume.
