Over a period of 60 years, The Geysers has witnessed the entry/exit of multiple firms as total steam production grew, peaked, and then began to decline. Using a conceptual model for the extraction of steam from a vapor dominated geothermal reservoir I show that this pattern of field development may, to some extent, be a result of spatial externalities. Spatial externalities arise because fluids in the reservoir are mobile. Production and injection decisions of one well operator can affect the flow rate of wells owned by other operators. When independently profit maximizing operators fail to take into account interdependence between wells, they extract fluids at a rate which exceeds that which would have maximized field-wide profits. The welfare loss that arises from the negative externality manifests largely in the form of over-capitalization, the building of too many wells and power plants. Results from a well-level spatial econometric model indicate that interdependence between wells at The Geysers is substantial. These results warrant further investigation of the common property nature of geothermal resources and a regulatory framework to manage spatial externalities that can arise in them.

Book excerpt: Certain wells within The Geysers steam field have standing water columns either when first drilled or when produced at low flow rates. These water columns have been attributed by Lipman et al. (1978) to accumulation of water condensing in the well bore. Alternative explanations are that perched water bodies exist within the reservoir or that a deep water body underlying the steam reservoir has been tapped. A well in the Castle Rock field of The Geysers drilled by Signal Oil and Gas Company (now Aminoil, U.S.A.) with such a water column was sampled in 1976 for water, gas, and isotope chemistry in hopes of distinguishing between these possible origins; the results along with the well history and downhole pressure and temperature measurements are reported here. The well is located in Lake County, California, in the central part of the Castle Rock field, 4.8 km west-northwest of the town of Anderson Springs. Drilling was started in mid 1970 on a ridge at an elevation of 700 m above sea level. Steam entries were encountered at depths (below land surface) of 1,899, 1,902, 2,176, 2,248 2,288, and 2,295 m; the total depth drilled was 2,498 m. Large volume water entries above 685 m were cased off to 762 m.

Book excerpt: A rather comprehensive reservoir engineering study made by Ramey (1968) of the Big Geysers area contains a table of yearly production, cumulative production, and average pressure of wells producing from the shallow zone in the Big Geysers area for the period from 1957 to 1967. Production prior to 1957 is not included in the cummulative production because of incomplete records. He used the information to plot a p/z curve versus cumulative production to obtain an ultimate steam recovery of 135 billion pounds from the shallow zone to an abandonment pressure of 65 psig. A brief engineering study was presented by Lipman, et al (1977), at which time eleven power generating plants were in operation. Included in that study is a brief picture of the regional drainage system around the Sulphur Bank, Happy Jack, and Big Geysers area showing the shallow reservoir anomaly in relation to the larger regional fracture system. Also presented is a pressure map showing the change of the 500 psia isobar with time and an isobaric map as of April 1977. These two maps cover the area from which wells produced steam into Units 1 to 11. These authors, however, did not present production data to correlate with the pressure behavior that they described. This paper presents a brief history of the development of the field, followed by several examples of production decline curves for wells having six or more years of history. The wells selected have varying production rates and original well spacings. The paper concludes with a section on the monthly, yearly, and cumulative production data as reported to the California Division of Oil and Gas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high-temperature vapor-dominated reservoir underlies a portion of the Northwest Geysers area, Sonoma County, California. The high-temperature reservoir (HTR) is defined by flowing fluid temperatures exceeding 500o F, rock temperatures apparently exceeding 600o F and steam enthalpies of about 1320 BTU/lb. Steam from existing wells drilled in the Northwest Geysers is produced from both a "typical" Geysers reservoir and the HTR. In all cases, the HTR is in the lower portion of the wells and is overlain by a "typical" Geysers reservoir. Depth to the high-temperature reservoir is relatively uniform at about -5900 ft subsea. There are no identified lithologic or mineralogic conditions that separate the HTR from the "typical" reservoir, although the two reservoirs are vertically distinct and can be located in most wells to within about 200 ft by the use of downhole temperature-depth measurements. Gas concentrations in steam from the HTR are higher (6 to 9 wt %) than from the "typical" Geysers reservoir (0.85 to 2.6 wt %). Steam from the HTR is enriched in chloride and the heavy isotopes of water relative to the "typical" reservoir. Available static and dynamic measurements show pressures are subhydrostatic in both reservoirs with no anomalous differences between the two: the HTR pressure being near 520 psia at sea level datum. The small observed differences in pressure between the reservoirs appear to vary along a steam density gradient. It is postulated that the Northwest Geysers area evolved more slowly toward vapor-dominated conditions than other parts of The Geysers field because of its poor connection with the surface. In this paper, a model is presented in which the boundary between the HTR and "typical" reservoir is a thermodynamic feature only, resulting from recent deep venting of a liquid-dominated system in which conduction is still an important component of heat transfer.
