Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stuart's Descriptive History of the Steam Engine The wonderful increase of machinery, of all kinds, that has taken place in England during the last thirty years, having been mainly produced by those improvements made on the Steam Engine which led to its general introduction as a first mover, has conferred great interest and importance on every circumstance connected with the construction and history of that magnificent mechanism. Several treatises of great merit, describing particular engines, have been long before the public; but in none of them has the general history of improvement formed any part of the plan of their authors. With the view of supplying this want, the following compilation was undertaken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Capital and Steam-Power, 1750-1800 This brief account of the invention of the steam-engine and of its introduction into industry is the result of researches made while I was a Bachelor Scholar of Christ's College, Cambridge. It does not pretend to be a complete account of the state of industry in the eighteenth century, but only deals in detail with such trades as were intimately connected with the steam-engine, and such as early adopted it as a power unit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam and the Steam Engine: Land, Marine, and Locomotive The chief aim of the author of this book has been to supply a want that he, in common with a large body of teachers, has experienced for many years. There is on Steam no cheap work that a teacher can put into the hands of his pupils, to give them at once a full and comprehensive idea of the whole subject. The author has striven to supply this defect, and to produce a work correct in its facts, safe in its deductions, and containing, where possible, new and original matter, or the old matter presented under new aspects. How far he has succeeded is for others to judge. An attempt has been made, not only to give the reader an insight into the details and specialities of the different kinds of engines employed to do man's work, but to make him understand the various principles upon which each part of the Steam Engine 'does that work, the relation these parts bear to each other, and the life or physiology, so to speak, of the whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering Such a plant has three essential elements: (1) The furnace, (2) the boiler, and (3) the engine. Fuel is fed into the furnace, here it is burned. A portion of the heat liberated from the fuel by combustion is absorbed by the water in the boiler, converting it into steam under pressure. The steam being admitted to the cylinder of the engine does work upon the piston and is then exhausted through a suitable pipe to the atmosphere. The process is a continuous one, fuel and water being fed into the furnace and the boiler in proportion to the power demanded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engine The properties of this vapor and their applicability to the wants of social life were discovered, will form one of the main subjects of this volume. There is no experiment in the whole range of science which would create more curious wonder than the boiling of water and the production of steam, if it were but novel. That water should be put into a. Close vessel as a heavy fluid, obe dient, like all other solids and liquids, to the law of gravitation, and that after a short period of exposure to heat it should burst out as an elastic, bounding vapor, rising and spreading instead of falling, is a phenomenon quite as surprising as the formation of a solid by the mixture of two liquids, or any other marvel of modern chemistry. But it is generally viewed without interest, be cause it is daily seen, and what little is known about its properties is commonly learned from household tradition, rather than from thought or investigation. Few, however, are so ignorant as not to know that when water has been made hot enough to boil, the heat it continues to receive is employed in converting it into steam, and that this steam has a. Great expansive power. Now it is this property of expansion which gives steam its mechanical force. The same principle which, on a small scale, causes the cover of the tea kettle to rise, will, when steam is generated in larger vessels, and allowed to gather force by accumulation, lift up the most ponderous weights. To the force of this vapor, indeed, there is no limit but the magnitude and strength of the boil ers in which it is generated. If steam, however. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook on the Steam Engine: With Especial Reference to Small and Medium-Sized Engines; For the Use of Engine Makers, Mechanical Draughtsmen, Engineering Students, and Users of Steam Power IN the present condition of the markets, makers must not occupy too much time in calculations or mathematical research, but collecting results from actual practice, must note them in a convenient form, though not as formulae, since formulae are only useful within certain limits, there always being a risk of error in calculation. If anyone compares the results of the formulae of one writer with those of another, he will often find great discrepancies between them. The present work aims at showing the results of practical experience. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plants: Their Design and Construction Frequently engineers and others in charge of a manufacturing business, be it a mill, factory or electric generating station, are called upon to design and purchase a steam power plant or parts of it when their knowledge of the machinery that goes into such a plant is more or less limited, and without being able to obtain the benefit of the advice of a competent consulting engineer. It is hoped that this book will be of special value to this class and of some value to all interested in steam power-plant construction. Part of the text appeared in a series of articles in the engineer ing record, and when the demand for them seemed to warrant their' being published in book form they were thoroughly revised and considerable new matter added. A number of the illustrations have been selected from articles printed in the engineering record during the last two or three years descriptive of steam power-plant construction. They are reprinted without the text that accompanied them, thinking they would be suggestive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Auxiliaries and Accessories Most of the preventable losses in the engine rooms of steam power plants occur in connection with the auxiliary equipment. Generally speaking, there is not a great deal that the operating engineer can do to increase the efficiencies of the prime movers -the turbines or engines. It is also a fact - that, as a rule, the prime movers in a plant give relatively little trouble and involve relatively little maintenance expense. Most of the trouble and maintenance expense is due to the auxiliaries. Thus, it. follows that, in a sense, the auxiliary equipment comprises the most important part of that portion of the power-plant equipment which transforms the heat in the steam into power. Hence, in this book, it has been the endeavor to give such data as will enable the operator to select, and properly install, auxiliary equipment which will insure the generation of power at the least cost. Furthermore - and quite as important. - it has been the aim to provide the information whereby this auxiliary equipment can be so operated and maintained that its preventable losses will be a minimum and that its up-keep expense will be as small as is feasible. Drawings for all of the 411 illustrations were made especially for this work. It has been the endeavor so to design and render these pictures that they will convoy the desired information with a minimum of supplementary discussion. Throughout the text, principles which are presented are explained with descriptive expositions or with worked-out arithmetical examples. At the end of each of the 13 divisions there are questions to be answered and, where justified, problems to be solved by the reader. These questions and problems arc based on the text matter in the division just preceding. If the reader can answer the questions and solve the problems, he then must be conversant with the subject matter of the division. Detail solutions to all of the problems are printed in the appendix in the back of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
