Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Steam Engineer's Handbook is volume that began for tradesmen in the early 20th century. Small, straightforward and satisfactory to requirements. It begins with practical mathematical guidance which could benefit any elementary student of applied mathematics. Volumes of cylinders, cubes and oblongs and equations for the measurement of pressure within a pipe or boiler. The contents hardly stop there however, and the reader can expect a practical guide to relevant chemistry, a construction brief on the major types of furnace and stern directive on how to obtain quality steam. It is likely this comprehensive approach that kept this book in use for engineers until later in the century and keeps it relevant to this day. This book was intended to be, in its author's words, 'A convenient reference book for all persons interested in Steam Boilers, Steam Engines, Steam Turbines and the other Auxiliary appliances and Machinery of Power plants'. Calculated to be a handbook in the literal sense this book is academic without the faintest trace of elitism and optimistic about the possibility of solving just about any steam engine, boiler or auxiliary system problem. The scope was ambitious from the start but it keeps this book fascinating. At the time of writing these technologies did not simply heat homes, baths or meals for society. It pushed steamships across the Atlantic and powered cross continental trains to cut through the unbroken landscape. This technology was reaching the world and bringing it within our grasp. This book stowed away in the pockets of the engineers as they went. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Engine and Turbine: A Text-Book for Engineering Colleges Viewing the steam plant as a whole, a line is drawn between the members that have to do with the generation and impartation of heat, and those concerned with its conversion into work through the agency of steam. In other words, the furnace and boiler, with their acces scries, are taken to constitute a subject for treatment elsewhere, except that allusion is freely made to their functions. But on the side of the steam machine a comprehensive presentation is undertaken: to the writer it appears that the study of the piston engine and of the turbine can most effectively and profitably be combined in a single course. It is assumed that the student approaches the subject with at least a general knowledge of the form and working of the steam plant, and with a good preparation in the elements of physics and of mechanics. All deductions along the latter lines begin, however, with basal facts or principles, so that the book shall be self-contained on that side. In the matter of thermodynamics, which is carried only so far as it is of immediate use and application, a special effort is made to develop con cepts and ideas, not merely to build up a mathematical, abstract strue ture on a few axioms. An excess of mathematics is avoided, preference being largely given to graphical methods. Many numerical examples illustrate and enforce the text, emphasize the quantitative side of the subject, and will suggest problems for class-room use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Engineering, Vol. 2 of 7: A General Reference Work on Steam Boilers, Pumps, Engines, and Turbines, Gas and Oil Engines, Automobiles, Etc Sir Humphry Davy showed that two pieces of ice might be melted by rubbing them together. He thus proved that heat can be produced by the expenditure of work only. This leads to the important conclusion that heat must be a form of energy, Since it can be produced from energy, and (as we know in the case of the steam engine) can itself be converted into well-recognized forms of energy. In fact, the behavior of air is found in practice to conform so closely with the laws of perfect gases that the discrepancies may be ignored in ordinary calculations such as those involved in the present treatment of the subject. Table I, 'from Richards' Compressed Air, lists the weight of air per cubic foot at various temperatures Fahrenheit; also the volume of one pound of air at the same temperatures. The weight of a cubic foot of dry air at any atmospheric pressure and at any temperature Fahrenheit, may be found by dividing the constant 39 819 by the absolute temperature (temperature Fahrenheit The volume of one pound of dry air at atmospheric pres sure and any temperature, is found by dividing the absolute tempera ture by the constant Thus. Even taking into consideration that sufficient space must be provided for the lifting gear for dismantling the exhaust pipe connections, a less height is required than with reciprocating engines, which constitute a considerable advantage in battleships with armoured decks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Steam Turbine The author has endeavoured in this book to describe, not only the principal parts of the leading types of steam turbine, but also the small details which, in the case of this motor, have such a preponderating influence in determining success or failure. The theory of the action of the steam turbine is also treated of, and the subject is likewise dealt with historically. Comparisons have necessarily been made with the hydraulic turbine and with the reciprocating engine; but, with a view to extending the usefulness of the book, the author has assumed on the part of the reader no prior knowledge of the hydraulic turbine, and only an elementary knowledge of the reciprocating engine and of the laws of thermo-dynamics. With a like object in view the author has tried to make the mathematical reasoning as simple as possible. A further addition, that may be useful to designers just at pres ent, is the reports of the comprehensive experiments on the many stage impulse turbines of and Ratean. As the author was given full freedom in conducting his experiments, researches of a scientific character could also be made, and we might say that we know more about the performance of this turbine type under vari ous conditions of running than that of any, other system. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Power Plant Engineering The field embraced by the title is a large one and it has been necessary to limit the treatment to essential elements. Much of the matter contained in the author's original notes, including that relat ing to, steam engine design, valve gears, steam boiler design, and the like, has therefore been omitted. The numerous references appear ing throughout the text and the appended bibliographies, which have been carefully compiled, are depended upon to extend the scope of the work. The standard codes of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for conducting engine and boiler trials are in frequent demand by engineers and have therefore been included as an appendix. Authorities have been freely consulted and extensive use made of current engineering literature, due acknowledgment being made by footnote or reference whenever possible. The matter included is representative of American practice and no effort has been made to include any other except in a few special cases. The author wishes to express his obligations to Prof. Raymond Burnham for many valuable suggestions and corrections, and to Mrs. Julia Beveridge, librarian at Armour Institute, for assistance in compiling references. Yet this neglect in examining the action of the several parts or organs of the boiler is not less culpable than if surgeons were to ignore dissection, or the examination of the functions of each organ of the body, and trust to Observation of the exterior human frame.
