Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boilers and Combustion Unfortunately most of the books published are highly technical works dealing with what has been done and not with the possibilities of future development. This Spells a great danger to initiative - which is discounted to a great extent - by placing too much reliance on the past rather than encouraging a determined attack on future possibilities. A learned professor has gone farther than most in this direction when he asserted that engineers and boiler experts had been fostering wrong ideas in Spite of the fact that extended practice qualified present laws. His declaration that the theories accepted, and their laws, were utterly wrong, is a deduction from what his own experiments revealed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam-Boilers There is given a description of various types of boilers in common use. Following this is a discussion of combustion, corrosion, and incrustation, with a statement of the most recent investigations and conclusions on these important subjects. We are fortunately able to give a satisfactory table of the compositions of American fuels - the first, so far as we are aware, that has been published. A statement is given of the proper and of the customary sizes and form of furnaces, and of the methods of firing. In the present unsatisfactory condition of the chimney problem we have contented ourselves with giving the ordinary theory and pointing out its defects, together with the common ways of proportioning chimneys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boilers: Their Management and Working on Land and Sea As nearly all the, writers on this subject have been non-practical, therefore, notwithstanding their scientific attainments, reasonings, and data being ever so scientifically correct as a whole, their writings are void of many important details and important practical facts; and being couched in abstruse and technical language, are unintelligible to the mass of persons in charge of steam boilers, and uninteresting to others, who fail to find in them the particular counsel they desire. Under such circumstances it is obvious that much conflict of opinion and conflict of practice will exist amongst those in charge of steam boilers, and even among practical men, regarding the subject. Any effort, therefore, to treat the subject in a thoroughly simple yet practical manner, in the language of the engine-room, the workshop and the factory, will be welcomed by those having a bona-fide interest in the management and running of steam boilers. Book Synopsis Arithmetic of the Steam Boiler by : Charles J. Mason
Download or read book Arithmetic of the Steam Boiler written by Charles J. Mason and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arithmetic of the Steam Boiler: A Reference Book Showing the Various Applications of Arithmetic to Steam Boilers This book is a compilation of arithmetical rules and formulas applicable to steam boilers of various types. The author claims no originality in the preparation of the material, excepting only the arrangement and manner of presentation. It is intended as a book of reference for those who may require rules and formulas directly related to steam boilers, and its aim is concentration and logical order in the arrangement and treatment of the various features introduced. Most of the material was gathered during the author's career as a steam and marine engineer, covering a period of twenty-five years. It is not intended to teach the elements and principles of arithmetic in this book, as might perhaps be inferred from the title, but only the application of arithmetic to steam-boiler calculations. It is presumed that those who may use it already understand arithmetic but desire to have a compact set of rules and formulas conveniently ready for use, without having to look through several books for a certain one when required. Those who are preparing for examinations for engineer's certificates and licenses will find the work of great assistance to them. Download or read book A Treatise on Steam-Boilers written by Robert Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Steam-Boilers: Their Strength, Construction, and Construction, Economical Working As anything like a complete history of boiler progress is beyond the scope of such a small work as this, only a slight sketch of the salient points has been attempted in the first chapter. A complete history, accompanied by remarks pointing out the defects that have led to the disuse of many inventions connected with boiler work, would be of real service to many, for, judging by the frequency of the repetition of Old defects, it would appear to be even more important to know what to avoid than what to adopt in designing new boilers. Book Synopsis The Design of Steam Boilers and Pressure Vessels (Classic Reprint) by : George B. Haven
Download or read book The Design of Steam Boilers and Pressure Vessels (Classic Reprint) written by George B. Haven and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design of Steam Boilers and Pressure Vessels The design of machinery is sometimes defined as the science of reasonable approximation. Comparatively few of the methods necessary in fixing the proportions of machine parts fall under the established formulae of Physics or Applied Mechanics. It is only by a skilful adaptation of theoretical deductions to practical requirements that the science of Machine Design may claim a right to legitimate and useful existence. With the hope of harmonizing still further the rational methods of both theory and practice, the authors of this volume have sought to incorporate in its pages the most direct procedure possible in the design of pressure apparatus. As a basis for the broader study of Machine Design it is believed that problems of this character possess peculiar advantages. The definiteness of the loads in pressure vessels and the reliability of the materials usually employed in their construction are incentives to intelligent and accurate calculation. Wherever possible, results have been obtained by rational rather than empirical methods. The usages of current boiler-making practice have been kept constantly in view. Numerous assumptions have necessarily been made but in every case it is believed a conservative reason has been given as their basis. The last five chapters serve to illustrate the application of the principles and formulae previously deduced to the practical design of various types of boilers and pressure vessels. It is hoped that the definite program followed in these problems may be of value not alone to students but to the boiler-making profession as well. The data and constants assumed are derived from actual practice and represent wide margins of safety in regard to boiler performance and construction. The design of water tube boilers is largely the result of ripe experience and well established precedent. Aside from a few features in connection with the steam drum, their proportions can rarely be determined by calculation. Hence it has not been considered wise to include in this work the specific design of a boiler of this class. Book Synopsis Steam Boiler Engineering by : Heine Safety Boiler Company
Download or read book Steam Boiler Engineering written by Heine Safety Boiler Company and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Boiler Engineering: A Treatise on Steam Boilers and the Design and Operation of Boiler Plants Adored by the ancient husbandman as the God who blessed his labors with a harvest of golden grain; revered by the early sage as the great visible means of the divine creative force; pictured by the inspired artist as the tire less charioteer who drives his four fiery steeds daily across the heavens, his head circled by a crowd of rays, his chariot wheel the disk of the sun itself. When primeval man began to think, the sun seemed to him the cause of all those wonders in nature which ministered to his simple wants, or taught his soul to hope. His crude feelings of awe and gratitude blossomed into worship, and we find the sun as central figure in all early religions. He was the Suraya of the Hindoos. The Baal of the Phoenicians, the Odin of the Norsemen, and his temples arose alike in ancient Mexico and Peru. As Mithras of the Parsees, he was adored as the symbol of the Supreme Deity, his mes senger and agent for all good. As Osiris he received the worship and offerings of the Egyptians, whose priests, early adepts in the rudiments of science, saw in him the cause of the annual fructifying overflow of the Nile. Modern knowledge, with its vast array of facts and figures, can but verify and seal the faith of these ancient observers. What they dimly discerned as probable is now the central fact of physical science. From him are derived all the forces of nature which have been yoked into the service of man. All animal and plant life draws its daily sustenance from the warmth and light of the sun, and it is but his transmuted energy we expend, when, with muscle of man or horse, we load our truck or roll it along the highway.
