Book excerpt: A compressible time-dependent procedure for the two-dimensional ensemble averaged Navier-Stokes equations has been applied to the isolated airfoil problem in steady and unsteady flows. The procedure solves the governing equations via the linearized block implicit technique. Turbulence is modeled either via a mixing length or turbulence energy approach. The equations are solved in general non-orthogonal form with no-slip boundary conditions applied at the airfoil surface. Results are presented for airfoils at constant incidence, an airfoil in ramp motion and an airfoil oscillating through a dynamic stall loop. In general, steady converged solutions are obtained within 70 time steps over the range of Mach numbers considered. Comparisons with measured data show good agreement between computation and measurement.

Book excerpt: An interactive boundary-layer method previously developed and tested for steady flows is used here in a quasi-steady manner to examine the evolution of the flow behavior of airfoils subject to harmonic oscillation and ramp-type motions. The calculations encompass the airfoil and wake flows at angles of attack which lead to separation. The results quantify the effects of the viscous boundary layer and wake on the variation of lift coefficient with angle of attack and reduced frequency. These effects are shown to be large at angles of attack which involve boundary-layer separation. Keywords: Boundary layer flow; Flow separation; Fluid mechanics; Oscillating airfoils; Stalling; Lift coefficients; Unsteady motion. (edc).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is concerned with the development of a general mathematical model for the motion of a two-dimensional airfoil in unsteady aerodynamics and with the study of numerical schemes for estimating parameters in this model. The equations of motion are a set of coupled ordinary and functional differential equations. Approximating Wagner functions are used to construct state space models that retain the hereditary nature of unsteady fluid flow. The results of some simple numerical experiments are presented including a preliminary analysis of wind-tunnel data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preliminary results from an UnSTeady AiRfoil analysis in 2 dimensions have been obtained from a computer code (USTAR2) developed by the present authors. This computer code is based upon an analysis which uses a doublet panel method to model the airfoil surface, an integral unsteady boundary layer scheme to model the viscous attached flow, and discrete vortices to model the detached boundary layers which form the airfoil wake region. This model has been used successfully to predict steady lift and drag coefficients as well as pressure distributions for several airfoils with both attached and detached boundary layers. In addition, calculations have been made for a limited number of cases for both attached and detached unsteady flow situations. These calculations are compared in a cursory way with experimental data to point out some of the strengths and weaknesses of the present formulation.

Book excerpt: A major challenge in the design and development of turbomachine airfoils for gas turbine engines is high cycle fatigue failures due to flutter and aerodynamically induced forced vibrations. In order to predict the aeroelastic response of gas turbine airfoils early in the design phase, accurate unsteady aerodynamic models are required. However, accurate predictions of flutter and forced vibration stress at all operating conditions have remained elusive. The overall objectives of this research program are to develop a transition model suitable for unsteady separated flow and quantify the effects of transition on airfoil steady and unsteady aerodynamics for attached and separated flow using this model. Furthermore, the capability of current state-of-the-art unsteady aerodynamic models to predict the oscillating airfoil response of compressor airfoils over a range of realistic reduced frequencies, Mach numbers, and loading levels will be evaluated through correlation with benchmark data. This comprehensive evaluation will assess the assumptions used in unsteady aerodynamic models. The results of this evaluation can be used to direct improvement of current models and the development of future models. The transition modeling effort will also make strides in improving predictions of steady flow performance of fan and compressor blades at off-design conditions. This report summarizes the progress and results obtained in the first year of this program. These include: installation and verification of the operation of the parallel version of TURBO; the grid generation and initiation of steady flow simulations of the NASA/Pratt&Whitney airfoil at a Mach number of 0.5 and chordal incidence angles of 0 and 10 deg.; and the investigation of the prediction of laminar separation bubbles on a NACA 0012 airfoil.Capece, Vincent R. and Platzer, Max F.Glenn Research CenterUNSTEADY AERODYNAMICS; TURBOMACHINERY; AIRFOILS; AEROELASTICITY; GAS TURBINE ENGINES; INCIDENCE; FORCED VIBRATION

Book excerpt: Aircraft design processes require extensive work in the area of both aerodynamics and structure, fonning an environment for aeroelasticity investigations. Present and future designs of European aircraft are characterized by an ever increasing aircraft size and perfonnance. Strong weight saving requirements are met by introduction of new materials, leading to more flexible structure of the aircraft. Consequently, aeroelastic phenomena such as vortex-induced aeroelastic oscillations and moving shock waves can be predominant and may have a significant effect on the aircraft perfonnance. Hence, the ability to estimate reliable margins for aeroelastic instabilities (flutter) or dynamic loads (buffeting) is a major concern to the aircraft designer. As modern aircrafts have wing bending modes with frequencies that are low enough to influence the flight control system, demands on unsteady aerodynamics and structural analysis to predict flight control effectiveness and riding comfort for passengers are extremely high. Therefore, the aircraft industries need an improved capacity of robust, accurate and reliable prediction methods in the coupled aeroelastic, flight mechanics and loads disciplines. In particular, it is necessary to develop/improve and calibrate the numerical tools in order to predict with high level of accuracy and capability complex and non-classical aeroelastic phenomena, including aerodynamic non-linearities, such as shock waves and separation, as well as structural non-linearities, e. g. control surface free-play. Nowadays, robust methods for structural analysis and linearised unsteady aerodynamics are coupled and used by the aircraft industry to computationally clear a new design from flutter.
