Angesichts des weitgesteckten inhaltlichen Rahmens und einer Begrenzung des geplanten Buchumfanges mußten allerdings bezüglich der mathematischen Herleitung der Verfahren einige Abstriche gemacht werden. Mir kam es vor allem darauf an, dem Leser die interne Logik, die rechnerische Durchführung und den Stellenwert der behandelten statistischen Methoden im Rahmen empirischer Forschungen zu verdeutlichen, wobei ich hierbei den Vorwurf gelegentlicher Weitschweifigkeit gern in Kauf nehme. Obgleich es mein Bestreben war, die ftir dieses Buch relevante Literatur möglichst weitgehend zu berück sichtigen, bin ich mir sicher, daß der eine oder andere wichtige Beitrag übersehen wurde. Für diesbezügliche Anregungen sowie Hinweise auf Formel-und Rechenfehler, die vermut lich trotz mehrfachen Korrekturlesens nicht entdeckt wurden, bin ich dem Leser sehr dankbar. Das Buch ist aus Lehrveranstaltungen hervorgegangen, die ich seit mehreren Jahren im Fach "Psychologische Methodenlehre" am Institut ftir Psychologie der Technischen Uni versität Berlin durchführe. Es wendet sich dementsprechend an einen Leserkreis, dem in erster Linie Psychologiestudenten angehören. Da jedoch Verfahren behandelt werden, die generell einsetzbar sind, wenn es um die Auswertung empirischer Daten geht, kann dieses Buch auch dem Studenten der Soziologie, der Pädagogik, der Medizin, der Wirtschaftswis senschaften usw. Anregungen vermitteln. Besondere mathematische Vorkenntnisse, die über die übliche schulmathematische Vorbildung hinausgehen, sind zum Verständnis des Textes nicht erforderlich.

This thesis deals with the question of whether it is possible to recognize the kind of task a Web user is performing by just looking at the user's behavior. Two studies were conducted to examine whether behavioral aspects, such as mouse and scroll movement, mouse clicks or page view duration, give hint on the surfing mode which may be just browsing, information gathering or fact finding. This thesis is meant to provide a basis for the personalization of Websites such as on-line newspapers where personalization is not only based on the analysis of content information or general topic preferences, but, additionally, on the current context represented by the kind of task a user is performing at the very moment.

Book excerpt: The general review of the European Union’s budget scheduled for the years 2008 and 2009 offers a unique opportunity for reflections. Explicitly this review is “without taboos” so that also substantive changes can and should be debated. Without doubt much better budgetary systems can be imagined compared to the status quo of the EU budget which is the outcome of a path-dependent process and where many details are only understandable by taking account of the historical context of past decisions. However, even if much better systems could be designed in theory, each reform suggestion, in the end, must pass the reality check of fi- ing unanimous support from all 27 member countries. This restriction heavily l- its the universe of available reform options. Faced with that difficulty the ZEW project team embarked on the adventure to think about possible reform options for the future EU own resource system. This volume documents the conclusions. At first sight our reform suggestion may - pear to be of a rather piecemeal nature since we recommend a reform model with strong ties to the status quo. Nevertheless, we are convinced that our seemingly minor changes will set the budget on a path towards a more rational European budget which, in the end, will create leeway for financing European policies with a true European value added.
