Book excerpt: Statistics courses are fundamental to many undergraduate degree programs, because statistics is useful in most careers and everyday tasks. However, psychology students frequently harbor negative attitudes and feelings of anxiety about enrolling in and completing statistics courses. For this dissertation, I designed and implemented three utility value interventions, one classroom-based (N=170) and two laboratory-based (N=200 and N=186), to improve psychology students' attitudes and reduce their anxieties about statistics. The interventions were embedded in weekly written summaries of the content students were learning in their introductory statistics course (classroom-based study), interactive lessons on statistical topics, such as significance testing and effect size (lab-based study), and infographics showcasing statistics' usefulness in students' future careers and their everyday lives (lab-based study). All interventions used random assignment and active control conditions. In the classroom-based study, students who were treated with the intervention did not significantly improve their attitudes toward statistics. In the two lab-based studies, students treated with the intervention did improve their attitudes toward statistics, but so did students who were not treated with the intervention. Although none of the interventions lessened students' anxiety about statistics and math, in two of the three studies all students reported lowered anxiety from pre- to post-assessment. In this dissertation, after reporting my research, I address the nature of my studies' control conditions, the time between my studies' assessments, and the implications of my studies for designing statistics courses, as well as my studies' limitations.

To achieve this objective, a concise definition of statistics anxiety, as well as, the distinction between statistics anxiety and math anxiety is provided as the scientific rationale why the focus of this discussion is on interventions that reduce statistics anxiety, but not math anxiety in general. Statistics anxiety has become an issue of concern in higher education due to its implications on teaching and learning. In retrospect, the trends of statistics anxiety are quite alarming. This aspect is evidenced by Onwuegbuzie and Wilson (2003) who report that statistic anxiety affects 80% of behavioral and social sciences students. They also report that most degree programs require students to enroll in quantitative research and statistics courses as part of their training. These statistic courses are reported to evoke anxiety-provoking experiences among students. Similarly, Macher et al. (2013) reaffirm that statistics courses have been found to be the major source of anxiety in student’s curriculum. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to validate an instrument that can be used by instructors or social scientist who are interested in evaluating statistics anxiety. The psychometric properties of the English version of the Statistical Anxiety Scale (SAS) was examined through a confirmatory factor analysis of scores from a sample of 323 undergraduate social science majors enrolled in colleges and universities in the United States. In previous studies, the psychometric properties of the Spanish and Italian versions of the SAS were validated; however, the English version of the SAS had never been assessed. Inconsistent with previous studies, scores on the English version of the SAS did not produce psychometrically acceptable values of validity. However, the results of this study suggested the potential value of a revised two-factor model SAS to measure statistics anxiety. Additionally, the Attitudes Towards Statistics (ATS) scale was used to examine the convergent and discriminant validities of the two-factor SAS. As expected, the correlation between the two factors of the SAS and the two factors of the ATS uncovered a moderately negative correlation between examination anxiety and attitudes towards the course. Additionally, the results of a structural regression model of attitudes towards statistics as a predictor of statistics anxiety suggested that attitudes towards the course and attitudes towards the field of statistics moderately predicts examination anxiety with attitudes towards the course having the greatest influence. It is recommended that future studies examine the relationship between attitudes towards statistics, statistics anxiety, and other variables such as academic achievement and instructional style.

Book excerpt: The present study investigated relationships between statistics anxiety (SA), trait anxiety, attitudes towards mathematics and statistics, and academic achievement among university students who had at least one study course related to statistics in their study programme. Five hun-dred and twelve students from the University of Ljubljana completed the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and answered questions about their perceptions of mathematics and statistics. The results showed below-average mean scores on the STARS dimensions, except for the Test and Class Anxiety with the average score around the midpoint of the scale. Female students reported higher levels of SA than male students did. The highest levels of SA were reported by students who perceived mathematics and statistics as a threat. The subscales of the STARS correlated positively with students' trait anxiety. Students who reported less enjoyment in mathematics in high school perceived statistics to be a less worthy subject and had a lower computa-tion self-concept. Students who had better mathematics performance in high school and higher average study grades also reported a higher computation self-concept. In the present study, we translated the STARS questionnaire into Slovenian and confirmed the six-factor structure of the questionnaire. The results provide a basis for further research on statistics anxiety and further validation of the STARS questionnaire. The results can also aid statistics teachers in better understanding students' worries, fears, and attitudes towards statistics and in learning about the factors that affect students' statistics anxiety and their work in the course.
