Book Synopsis Statistics and Scaling in Turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard Convection by : Emily S.C. Ching

This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief addresses two issues of interest of turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection. The first issue is the characterization and understanding of the statistics of the velocity and temperature fluctuations in the system. The second issue is the revelation and understanding of the nature of the scaling behavior of the velocity temperature structure functions. The problem under the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation is formulated. The statistical tools, including probability density functions (PDF) and conditional statistics, for studying fluctuations are introduced, and implicit PDF formulae for fluctuations obeying certain statistical symmetries are derived. Applications of these PDF formulae to study the fluctuations in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection are then discussed. The phenomenology of the different types of scaling behavior: the Bolgiano-Obhukov scaling behavior when buoyancy effects are significant and the Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin scaling behavior when they are not, is introduced. A crossover between the two types of scaling behavior is expected to occur at the Bolgiano length scale above which buoyancy is important. The experimental observations are reviewed. In the central region of the convective cell, the Kolmogorov-Obukhov-Corrsin scaling behavior has been observed. On the other hand, the Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling remains elusive only until recently. By studying the dependence of the conditional temperature structure functions on the locally averaged thermal dissipation rate, evidence for the Bolgiano-Obukhov scaling has recently been found near the bottom plate. The different behaviors observed in the two regions could be attributed to the different size of the Bolgiano scale. What physics determines the relative size of the Bolgiano scale remains to be understood. The Brief is concluded by a discussion of these outstanding issues.

These are three- or four-day meetings for the discussion of current research on a specified and relatively narrow topic in mechanics, by about 50 specialists chosen for their active involvement in research in that topic. The organization of each Euromech Colloquium is entrusted by the Committee to one or two selected scientists of repute in the field, and these organizers are enjoined to achieve a friendly and informal forum for discussion, with a minimum of paper work and expenditure. Over 220 Euromech Colloquia have been held since 1964 (about 40 each in France, West Germany and Britain and the remainder in 18 countries in both western and eastern Europe) on a wide range of topics drawn from the mechanics of solid materials, hydrodynamics, gas dynamics and mechanical systems. The Committee believes that collectively, Euromech Colloquia have made a significant contribution to the exchange of ideas on topics in mechanics within Europe and have thereby helped to overcome the barriers to easy scientific communication in that sorely divided continent. A few years ago the European Mechanics Committee turned its atten tion to the possible need for European conferences on a larger scale than Euromech Colloquia.
Book Synopsis Turbulent Convection in Rayleigh-Bénard Cells with Modified Boundary Conditions by : Andrés Alonso Castillo-Castellanos

This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One outstanding feature of the Rayleigh-Bénard problem which concerns a horizontal fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above, is the spontaneous establishment of spatial ordering and the formation of a coherent large-scale circulation. How different factors, such as the domain geometry and boundary conditions, influence the sizes and shapes of the large-scale flow remains an open question. Despite its apparent simplicity, Rayleigh-Bénard convection exhibits some incredibly rich and complex large-scale dynamics such as torsional modes, rotation, sloshing, and cessations, which often coexist and compete to each other. One approach, commonly used in the study of cessations is to constrain the large scale circulation to a plane by restricting the fluid domain to a (2-D) square cell or to a slim rectangular cell of small aspect ratio in the transversal direction. However, it is not entirely clear whether the 2-D and (quasi-)2-D reversals correspond to the same phenomenon. The present document is dedicated to the study of the large-scale flow patterns in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, and of the influence exerted by different factors on the flow structures and on their temporal evolution. The proposed characterization combines a statistical analysis with a physical approach relying on the angular momentum as well as the kinetic and potential energies to highlight the underlying physical mechanisms. We subsequently attempt to tie these mechanisms together to each of the distinctive flow patterns observed and to their evolution.

Book excerpt: Turbulent thermal convection is of tremendous importance to many areas of science, technology as well as the environment. In this thesis, the dynamics of the large-scale circulation (LSC) in turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection, which is an idealised model to study turbulent thermal convection problem, is investigated using the multi-thermal probe technique in the high Prandtl number Pr regime.

Download or read book Scale Invariance written by Annick LESNE and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a century, from the Van der Waals mean field description (1874) of gases to the introduction of renormalization group (RG techniques 1970), thermodynamics and statistical physics were just unable to account for the incredible universality which was observed in numerous critical phenomena. The great success of RG techniques is not only to solve perfectly this challenge of critical behaviour in thermal transitions but to introduce extremely useful tools in a wide field of daily situations where a system exhibits scale invariance. The introduction of scaling, scale invariance and universality concepts has been a significant turn in modern physics and more generally in natural sciences. Since then, a new "physics of scaling laws and critical exponents", rooted in scaling approaches, allows quantitative descriptions of numerous phenomena, ranging from phase transitions to earthquakes, polymer conformations, heartbeat rhythm, diffusion, interface growth and roughening, DNA sequence, dynamical systems, chaos and turbulence. The chapters are jointly written by an experimentalist and a theorist. This book aims at a pedagogical overview, offering to the students and researchers a thorough conceptual background and a simple account of a wide range of applications. It presents a complete tour of both the formal advances and experimental results associated with the notion of scaling, in physics, chemistry and biology.
