Book excerpt: An English translation of my "Statistisahe Tafeln zur multivariaten Analysis - Ein Handbuah mit Hinweisen zur Anwendung" was planned already in 1975 when I prepared the German volume. The tables were immediately supplied with German and English headings for the inten ded photo-offset printing. In the meantime. new and important tables for multivariate statistiaal hypotheses and proaedures have been aompiled and published. Only four of them have been inaorporated in the present volume. The seleation of these tables must be on an individual basis for reasons of spaae. Let me mention only the new tables for sample size determination in MANOVA. The instruations for using the tables are all organized in the same way. They are kept short sinae it is not the task of suah a work to provide an introduation to the theory and praatiae of multivariate analysis. I have renounaed giving examples for the same reason. I wish instead to refer the reader to the many good textbooks that are avai lable. as well as to my own works on methods that are in preparation. Furthermore. I am of the opinion that statistiaal tables should aaaom pany the textbook rather than be inaluded in it. vii viii Finally, my thanks go to the translator, Mr. Peter R. Wadsack, as ~ell as to the ladies and gentlemen of Springer-Verlag for their pleasant collaboration and their indulgence of my numerous requests

Book excerpt: Multivariate Analysis Comprehensive Reference Work on Multivariate Analysis and its Applications The first edition of this book, by Mardia, Kent and Bibby, has been used globally for over 40 years. This second edition brings many topics up to date, with a special emphasis on recent developments. A wide range of material in multivariate analysis is covered, including the classical themes of multivariate normal theory, multivariate regression, inference, multidimensional scaling, factor analysis, cluster analysis and principal component analysis. The book also now covers modern developments such as graphical models, robust estimation, statistical learning, and high-dimensional methods. The book expertly blends theory and application, providing numerous worked examples and exercises at the end of each chapter. The reader is assumed to have a basic knowledge of mathematical statistics at an undergraduate level together with an elementary understanding of linear algebra. There are appendices which provide a background in matrix algebra, a summary of univariate statistics, a collection of statistical tables and a discussion of computational aspects. The work includes coverage of: Basic properties of random vectors, copulas, normal distribution theory, and estimation Hypothesis testing, multivariate regression, and analysis of variance Principal component analysis, factor analysis, and canonical correlation analysis Discriminant analysis, cluster analysis, and multidimensional scaling New advances and techniques, including supervised and unsupervised statistical learning, graphical models and regularization methods for high-dimensional data Although primarily designed as a textbook for final year undergraduates and postgraduate students in mathematics and statistics, the book will also be of interest to research workers and applied scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new version of the bestselling Computer-Aided Multivariate Analysis has been appropriately renamed to better characterize the nature of the book. Taking into account novel multivariate analyses as well as new options for many standard methods, Practical Multivariate Analysis, Fifth Edition shows readers how to perform multivariate statistical analyses and understand the results. For each of the techniques presented in this edition, the authors use the most recent software versions available and discuss the most modern ways of performing the analysis. New to the Fifth Edition Chapter on regression of correlated outcomes resulting from clustered or longitudinal samples Reorganization of the chapter on data analysis preparation to reflect current software packages Use of R statistical software Updated and reorganized references and summary tables Additional end-of-chapter problems and data sets The first part of the book provides examples of studies requiring multivariate analysis techniques; discusses characterizing data for analysis, computer programs, data entry, data management, data clean-up, missing values, and transformations; and presents a rough guide to assist in choosing the appropriate multivariate analysis. The second part examines outliers and diagnostics in simple linear regression and looks at how multiple linear regression is employed in practice and as a foundation for understanding a variety of concepts. The final part deals with the core of multivariate analysis, covering canonical correlation, discriminant, logistic regression, survival, principal components, factor, cluster, and log-linear analyses. While the text focuses on the use of R, S-PLUS, SAS, SPSS, Stata, and STATISTICA, other software packages can also be used since the output of most standard statistical programs is explained. Data sets and code are available for download from the book’s web page and CRC Press Online.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the data collected in medicine and the social sciences is categorical, for example, sex, marital status, blood group, whether a smoker or not and so on, rather than interval-scaled. Frequently the researcher collecting such data is interested in the relationships or associations between pairs, or between a set of such categorical variables; often the data is displayed in the form of a contingency table for example, smoker versus non-smoker against death from lung cancer or death from some other cause. This text gives a comprehensive account of the analysis of such tables, written at a level suitable for the applied researcher. The first edition of "The Analysis of Contingency Tables" arose from Professor A.E. Maxwell's earlier text, "Analysing Qualitative Data". In this new edition, more material is included that those methods which have developed over the last decade or so, for example, logistic regression models for tables with ordered categories and for response variables with more than two categories. A brief account is given of the increasingly important technique, correspondence analysis. The methods of analysis described in this book should be relevant to research workers and graduate students dealing with data from surveys, particularly in the area of psychiatry, social sciences and psychology.

Book excerpt: Multivariate Analysis deals with observations on more than one variable where there is some inherent interdependence between the variables. With several texts already available in this area, one may very well enquire of the authors as to the need for yet another book. Most of the available books fall into two categories, either theoretical or data analytic. The present book not only combines the two approaches but it also has been guided by the need to give suitable matter for the beginner as well as illustrating some deeper aspects of the subject for the research worker. Practical examples are kept to the forefront and, wherever feasible, each technique is motivated by such an example.

Book excerpt: The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. ". . . the wealth of material on statistics concerning the multivariate normal distribution is quite exceptional. As such it is a very useful source of information for the general statistician and a must for anyone wanting to penetrate deeper into the multivariate field." -Mededelingen van het Wiskundig Genootschap "This book is a comprehensive and clearly written text on multivariate analysis from a theoretical point of view." -The Statistician Aspects of Multivariate Statistical Theory presents a classical mathematical treatment of the techniques, distributions, and inferences based on multivariate normal distribution. Noncentral distribution theory, decision theoretic estimation of the parameters of a multivariate normal distribution, and the uses of spherical and elliptical distributions in multivariate analysis are introduced. Advances in multivariate analysis are discussed, including decision theory and robustness. The book also includes tables of percentage points of many of the standard likelihood statistics used in multivariate statistical procedures. This definitive resource provides in-depth discussion of the multivariate field and serves admirably as both a textbook and reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amstat News asked three review editors to rate their top five favorite books in the September 2003 issue. Methods of Multivariate Analysis was among those chosen. When measuring several variables on a complex experimental unit, it is often necessary to analyze the variables simultaneously, rather than isolate them and consider them individually. Multivariate analysis enables researchers to explore the joint performance of such variables and to determine the effect of each variable in the presence of the others. The Second Edition of Alvin Rencher's Methods of Multivariate Analysis provides students of all statistical backgrounds with both the fundamental and more sophisticated skills necessary to master the discipline. To illustrate multivariate applications, the author provides examples and exercises based on fifty-nine real data sets from a wide variety of scientific fields. Rencher takes a "methods" approach to his subject, with an emphasis on how students and practitioners can employ multivariate analysis in real-life situations. The Second Edition contains revised and updated chapters from the critically acclaimed First Edition as well as brand-new chapters on: Cluster analysis Multidimensional scaling Correspondence analysis Biplots Each chapter contains exercises, with corresponding answers and hints in the appendix, providing students the opportunity to test and extend their understanding of the subject. Methods of Multivariate Analysis provides an authoritative reference for statistics students as well as for practicing scientists and clinicians.

This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different people, from social scientists to government agencies to business professionals, depend on the results of multivariate models to inform their decisions. Researchers use these advanced statistical techniques to analyze relationships among multiple variables, such as how exercise and weight relate to the risk of heart disease, or how unemployment and interest rates affect economic growth. Yet, despite the widespread need to plainly and effectively explain the results of multivariate analyses to varied audiences, few are properly taught this critical skill. The Chicago Guide to Writing about Multivariate Analysis is the book researchers turn to when looking for guidance on how to clearly present statistical results and break through the jargon that often clouds writing about applications of statistical analysis. This new edition features even more topics and real-world examples, making it the must-have resource for anyone who needs to communicate complex research results. For this second edition, Jane E. Miller includes four new chapters that cover writing about interactions, writing about event history analysis, writing about multilevel models, and the “Goldilocks principle” for choosing the right size contrast for interpreting results for different variables. In addition, she has updated or added numerous examples, while retaining her clear voice and focus on writers thinking critically about their intended audience and objective. Online podcasts, templates, and an updated study guide will help readers apply skills from the book to their own projects and courses. This continues to be the only book that brings together all of the steps involved in communicating findings based on multivariate analysis—finding data, creating variables, estimating statistical models, calculating overall effects, organizing ideas, designing tables and charts, and writing prose—in a single volume. When aligned with Miller’s twelve fundamental principles for quantitative writing, this approach will empower readers—whether students or experienced researchers—to communicate their findings clearly and effectively.
