Book excerpt: The goal is to develop a rigorous theory to study the effects of stochastic fluctuations of self amplified spontaneous emission free-electron laser (SASE FEL) on the near-resonant ionization of atomic/ionic systems. To this end, density matrix equations of motion are utilised in their raw form for the sake of Monte Carlo simulations and in their particular averaged forms. First, a couple of simpler averaging methods were used to quickly understand the general behavior of the interaction of fluctuating fields with atoms. To this end, the particular case of neon (Ne) and helium (He) were used, where the effects of the interplay of the pulse duration and the coherence time on the oscillations of the yield profile, which manifest due to Rabi oscillations, were studied in comparison to a coherent pulse. Second, a rigorous method of perturbative approach is developed, which is based on the expansion in terms of multitime cumulants which are a particular combination of the field's coherence functions. The range of validity of the model is tested in terms of the field's coherence temporal length and peak intensity. Particularly, the photoionization of helium (He) and lithium ion (Li+ ) via their doubly-excited state 2s2p 1 P has been studied with the interacting FEL's 1st-order coherence function modelled as square-exponentially dependent. The traditional asymmetric resonant Fano-profile is broadened and is shown to acquire a Voigt profile. The effects of pulse duration, coherence time and peak intensity on the lineshape are clearly shown. The two approaches of averaging were compared and the supremacy of the latter is shown. When compared to Monte Carlo, it is seen that the rigorous averaging approach results in competing values up to higher peak intensities. This suggests that in the scenarios of low coherence time and peak intensities, the averaging method developed in this thesis is highly preferable over the traditional Monte Carlo given its high computational demands.

In this work Joseph Berkowitz selected the "best" absolute partial cross sections for the same species as included in the companion work. A contrast, however, is that photoabsorption measurements, being of order I/Io, do not require the most intense light sources, whereas acquiring data on the products of light interactions with gaseous matter (ions, electrons, various coincidence measurements) has benefited significantly with the arrival of second- and third-generation synchrotrons. The newer devices have also extended the energy range of the light sources to include the K-shells of the species discussed here. The newer light sources encouraged experimentalists to develop improved instrumentation. Thus, the determination of partial cross sections continues to be an active field, with more recent results in some cases superseding earlier ones. Book excerpt: Often, a new area of science grows at the confines between recognised subject divisions, drawing upon techniques and intellectual perspectives from a diversity of fields. Such growth can remain unnoticed at first, until a characteristic fami ly of effects, described by appropriate key words, has developed, at which point a distinct subject is born. Such is very much the case with atomic 'giant resonances'. For a start, their name itself was borrowed from the field of nuclear collective resonances. The energy range in which they occur, at the juncture of the extreme UV and the soft X-rays, remains to this day a meeting point of two different experimental techniques: the grating and the crystal spectrometer. The impetus of synchrotron spectroscopy also played a large part in developing novel methods, described by many acronyms, which are used to study 'giant resonances' today. Finally, although we have described them as 'atomic' to differentiate them from their counterparts in Nuclear Physics, their occurrence on atomic sites does not inhibit their existence in molecules and solids. In fact, 'giant resonances' provide a new unifying theme, cutting accross some of the traditional scientific boundaries. After much separate development, the spectroscopies of the atom in various environments can meet afresh around this theme of common interest. Centrifugal barrier effects and 'giant resonances' proper emerged almost simultaneously in the late 1960's from two widely separated areas of physics, namely the study of free atoms and of condensed matter.
