Pre-modern histories of cross-cultural exchange pose a particular problem for medieval historians. They are marked by the long-distance mobility of concepts, individuals, and materials, and many of them cannot be reconstructed from the standard source texts on which historians usually depend. They exist without named makers, both outside and beyond official documents and court chronicles. The same is true of artisans responsible for crafting objects whose circulation and reception defined aesthetic, economic, and technological networks that may not have conformed to political or sectarian boundaries. Authored by two leading medieval historians of the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, Object Lessons addresses the gaps in medieval sources and modern scholarship, arguing for the archival value of objects, images, and monuments. Flood and Fricke examine six case studies that focus on the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Musica Naturalis delivers the first systematic account of speculative music theory as a discursive horizon for literary poetics. The title refers to the late medieval French poet Eustache Deschamps, whose 1392 treatise on verse writing, L'Art de Dictier, famously casts verse as “natural music” in explicit distinction to song, which Deschamps defines as “artificial.” Philipp Jeserich links the significance of the speculative branch of medieval musicology to literary theory and literary production, opening up a field of study that has been largely neglected. Beginning with Augustine and Boethius, he traces the discourse of speculative music theory to the late fifteenth century, giving attention to medieval Latin and vernacular sources. A preoccupation of the book is the appearance and reappearance across the centuries of patterns used to organize temporal and cultural experience. After an opening essay on transcendental truth and cultural relativism, the second chapter traces a distinction, common in historical writings during the past two centuries, between an alleged ancient classical "cyclic" view of time and history, used to describe the claimed repetitiveness of and similarities between historical events ("nothing is new under the sun"), and a contrasting Jewish-Christian linear view, sometimes described as providential in that it moves through a series of unique events to some end intended by God. In the latter, history is "about something," the education of the human race or the redemption of humankind. As in each of the remaining essays, the book then attempts to draw out the limitations of what the current consensus on this topic has become. It does this for such things as our current understanding of religious toleration, humanism, natural law, and teleology. Some of the essays, such as those on debate about Augustine's understanding of marriage or the concluding illustrated essay on the baroque city of Lecce, are published for the first time. Others are based on previously published contributions to the scholarly literature, though generally each of these chapters concludes with a postscript that engages with current scholarly debate on the subject.
