Book excerpt: Foundations of time series for researchers and students This volume provides a mathematical foundation for time seriesanalysis and prediction theory using the idea of regression and thegeometry of Hilbert spaces. It presents an overview of the tools oftime series data analysis, a detailed structural analysis ofstationary processes through various reparameterizations employingtechniques from prediction theory, digital signal processing, andlinear algebra. The author emphasizes the foundation and structureof time series and backs up this coverage with theory andapplication. End-of-chapter exercises provide reinforcement for self-study andappendices covering multivariate distributions and Bayesianforecasting add useful reference material. Further coveragefeatures: * Similarities between time series analysis and longitudinal dataanalysis * Parsimonious modeling of covariance matrices through ARMA-likemodels * Fundamental roles of the Wold decomposition andorthogonalization * Applications in digital signal processing and Kalmanfiltering * Review of functional and harmonic analysis and predictiontheory Foundations of Time Series Analysis and Prediction Theory guidesreaders from the very applied principles of time series analysisthrough the most theoretical underpinnings of prediction theory. Itprovides a firm foundation for a widely applicable subject forstudents, researchers, and professionals in diverse scientificfields.

Book excerpt: Students and teachers of mathematics and related fields will find this book a comprehensive and modern approach to probability theory, providing the background and techniques to go from the beginning graduate level to the point of specialization in research areas of current interest. The book is designed for a two- or three-semester course, assuming only courses in undergraduate real analysis or rigorous advanced calculus, and some elementary linear algebra. A variety of applications—Bayesian statistics, financial mathematics, information theory, tomography, and signal processing—appear as threads to both enhance the understanding of the relevant mathematics and motivate students whose main interests are outside of pure areas.

Book excerpt: This edition contains a large number of additions and corrections scattered throughout the text, including the incorporation of a new chapter on state-space models. The companion diskette for the IBM PC has expanded into the software package ITSM: An Interactive Time Series Modelling Package for the PC, which includes a manual and can be ordered from Springer-Verlag. * We are indebted to many readers who have used the book and programs and made suggestions for improvements. Unfortunately there is not enough space to acknowledge all who have contributed in this way; however, special mention must be made of our prize-winning fault-finders, Sid Resnick and F. Pukelsheim. Special mention should also be made of Anthony Brockwell, whose advice and support on computing matters was invaluable in the preparation of the new diskettes. We have been fortunate to work on the new edition in the excellent environments provided by the University of Melbourne and Colorado State University. We thank Duane Boes particularly for his support and encouragement throughout, and the Australian Research Council and National Science Foundation for their support of research related to the new material. We are also indebted to Springer-Verlag for their constant support and assistance in preparing the second edition. Fort Collins, Colorado P. J. BROCKWELL November, 1990 R. A. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals mainly with three problems involving Gaussian stationary processes. The first problem consists of clarifying the conditions for mutual absolute continuity (equivalence) of probability distributions of a "random process segment" and of finding effective formulas for densities of the equiva lent distributions. Our second problem is to describe the classes of spectral measures corresponding in some sense to regular stationary processes (in par ticular, satisfying the well-known "strong mixing condition") as well as to describe the subclasses associated with "mixing rate". The third problem involves estimation of an unknown mean value of a random process, this random process being stationary except for its mean, i. e. , it is the problem of "distinguishing a signal from stationary noise". Furthermore, we give here auxiliary information (on distributions in Hilbert spaces, properties of sam ple functions, theorems on functions of a complex variable, etc. ). Since 1958 many mathematicians have studied the problem of equivalence of various infinite-dimensional Gaussian distributions (detailed and sys tematic presentation of the basic results can be found, for instance, in [23]). In this book we have considered Gaussian stationary processes and arrived, we believe, at rather definite solutions. The second problem mentioned above is closely related with problems involving ergodic theory of Gaussian dynamic systems as well as prediction theory of stationary processes.

Book excerpt: This textbook explores two distinct stochastic processes that evolve at random: weakly stationary processes and discrete parameter Markov processes. Building from simple examples, the authors focus on developing context and intuition before formalizing the theory of each topic. This inviting approach illuminates the key ideas and computations in the proofs, forming an ideal basis for further study. After recapping the essentials from Fourier analysis, the book begins with an introduction to the spectral representation of a stationary process. Topics in ergodic theory follow, including Birkhoff’s Ergodic Theorem and an introduction to dynamical systems. From here, the Markov property is assumed and the theory of discrete parameter Markov processes is explored on a general state space. Chapters cover a variety of topics, including birth–death chains, hitting probabilities and absorption, the representation of Markov processes as iterates of random maps, and large deviation theory for Markov processes. A chapter on geometric rates of convergence to equilibrium includes a splitting condition that captures the recurrence structure of certain iterated maps in a novel way. A selection of special topics concludes the book, including applications of large deviation theory, the FKG inequalities, coupling methods, and the Kalman filter. Featuring many short chapters and a modular design, this textbook offers an in-depth study of stationary and discrete-time Markov processes. Students and instructors alike will appreciate the accessible, example-driven approach and engaging exercises throughout. A single, graduate-level course in probability is assumed.

Book excerpt: This volume presents a collection of readings which give the reader an idea of the nature and scope of unobserved components (UC) models and the methods used to deal with them. The book is intended to give a self-contained presentation of the methods and applicative issues. Harvey has made major contributions to this field and provides substantial introductions throughout the book to form a unified view of the literature. - ;This book presents a collection of readings which give the reader an idea of the nature and scope of unobserved components (UC) models and the methods used to deal with them. It contains four parts, three of which concern recent theoretical developments in classical and Bayesian estimation of linear, nonlinear, and non Gaussian UC models, signal extraction and testing, and one is devoted to selected econometric applications. The first part focuses on the linear state space model; the readings provide insight on prediction theory, signal extraction, and likelihood inference for non stationary and non invertible processes, diagnostic checking, and the use of state space methods for spline smoothing. Part II deals with applications of linear UC models to various estimation problems concerning economic time series, such as trend-cycle decompositions, seasonal adjustment, and the modelling of the serial correlation induced by survey sample design. The issues involved in testing in linear UC models are the theme of part III, which considers tests concerned with whether or not certain variance parameters are zero, with special reference to stationarity tests. Finally, part IV is devoted to the advances concerning classical and Bayesian inference for non linear and non Gaussian state space models, an area that has been evolving very rapidly during the last decade, paralleling the advances in computational inference using stochastic simulation techniques. The book is intended to give a relatively self-contained presentation of the methods and applicative issues. For this purpose, each part comes with an introductory chapter by the editors that provides a unified view of the literature and the many important developments that have occurred in the last years. -
