Book excerpt: As Jimi Hendrix and Vietnam rumble on in the background, an Italian-American teenage boy grows up working in his dad's gas station in Massachusetts. In a world full of rear end fluid, floor jacks and leaky gaskets, the narrator is awkward with his father and not too hot at mounting snow tires or dismantling engines. Poetic, poignant, and beautifully observed -- the grease and grime of the gas station, the rhythms of work and talk, are detailed with such precision that the locality becomes universal -- Joseph Torra has written an extraordinary and superb coming-of-age novel in the great American blue-collar tradition, and one which has echoes of another working-class son of Massachusetts, Jack Kerouac.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Station Bookkeeping and Suggested Forms: With an Appendix for Street Railways About two years ago the writer published a Short series of articles on records and blanks for use in Electrical Lighting Central Stations in the Electrical Engineer under the name of Central Station Management and Finance. The articles being somewhat new at the time seemed so well thought of that they were published in book form. These articles were very crude; the forms lacked many features necessary or convenient and were not carried nearly far enough to cover the ground. Since those articles were written, having made personal examination of some 160 different stations both technically and financially for the United States Census, the writer thinks the subject can be covered much more fully, and in the light of past experience has attempted to outline and suggest methods and forms for use in such places, which, while not claiming to be perfect, contain the general outline of a classification, scheme of analysis, and forms of books and blank reports which may be of use in developing a system for any station. No claim is made for entire originality, as many of the forms are but slight, modifications of those used by companies already existing. The need of some system of records and accounts can scarcely be overestimated, very few stations keeping any kind of record outside the regular books, and these are often so few and poorly kept as to be of no use. Very few stations are in Shape to know2 central station bookkeeping and suggested forms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A historical novel from Newbery medalist Linda Sue Parks about life, faith, and America's favorite pastime: baseball. Both Maggie Fortini and her brother, Joey-Mick, were named for baseball great Joe DiMaggio. Unlike Joey-Mick, Maggie doesn’t play baseball—but at almost ten years old, she is a dyed-in-the-wool fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Maggie can recite all the players’ statistics and understands the subtleties of the game. Unfortunately, Jim Maine is a Giants fan, but it’s Jim who teaches Maggie the fine art of scoring a baseball game. Not only can she revisit every play of every inning, but by keeping score she feels she’s more than just a fan: she’s helping her team. Jim is drafted into the army and sent to Korea, and although Maggie writes to him often, his silence is just one of a string of disappointments—being a Brooklyn Dodgers fan in the early 1950s meant season after season of near misses and year after year of dashed hopes. But Maggie goes on trying to help the Dodgers, and when she finds out that Jim needs help, too, she’s determined to provide it. Against a background of major league baseball and the Korean War on the home front, Maggie looks for, and finds, a way to make a difference. Even those readers who think they don’t care about baseball will be drawn into the world of the true and ardent fan. Linda Sue Park’s captivating story will, of course, delight those who are already keeping score. This historical novel is from Newbery Medalist Linda Sue Park, whose beloved middle grade books include A Single Shard and A Long Walk to Water.
