Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Statics and Dynamics The science which treats of the action of force on bodies in motion is called Dynamics. In the more modern system of nomenclature which is gradually gaining general acceptance, the science which treats of the action of force on bodies is called Dynamics, and it has two subdivisions, Statics and Kinetics, treating of the action of forces on bodies which are at rest and in motion respectively. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Mechanics: Statics and Dynamics The following paragraph is an adaptation from the preface of the first edition of this work, published ten years ago; it applies to the present edition. This book might be described fairly as a theoretical mechanics for students of engineering. It is not comparable to books commonly called Theoretical Mechanics, generally intended for students of mathematics or physics; nor to books commonly titled Applied Mechanics which generally include a treat ment of strength of materials, hydraulics, etc., for students of engineering. The title Technical Mechanics seems fairly appropriate for this book; and inasmuch as it is not otherwise used in this country, it was so adopted. On the theoretical side, practically each subject discussed herein has a direct bearing on some engineering problem.' The applications were selected and presented for the purpose of illustrating a principle of mechanics and for training students in the use of such principles, not to furnish information, except incidentally, about the structure, machine, or what not to which the application was made. Ten years use of the book asa text in the author's classes has suggested many changes; and in recent years the need of a new collection of problems has become urgent. Accordingly, a revision was undertaken, and the effort has resulted in a practically rewritten book. Indeed the only portion of the former edition used again with little or no change is the present Appendix A. Though containing fewer pages than the old book, the new one because of its (nearly one-third) larger printed page contains more material than the old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Statics and Dynamics, Vol. 1 In the following work I have aimed at writing a working text-book on Statics for the use of Junior Students. Throughout the book will be found a large number of examples; most of them, with the exception of many of those at the end of the Chapter on Friction and the Miscellaneous Examples at the end of the volume, are of an easy type. I have tried to make the book complete as far as it goes; it is suggested, however, that the student should, on the first reading of the subject, omit everything marked with an asterisk. I must express my obligations to my friend Mr H. C. Robson, M.A., Fellow and Lecturer of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, for his kindness in reading through the proof-sheets, and for many suggestions that he has made to me. Any corrections of errors, or hints for improvement will be thankfully received. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics for Beginners, Vol. 1: Dynamics and Statics The Static Theory of Parallel Forces is deduced very' simply from the Theory of Moments by the consideration of a system of parallel forces as a particular case of forces meeting at a point. A combination of Morin's and Atwood's machines which I have suggested on p. 46 will I think be found useful by way of illustration. The chapter on the Pendulum is abbreviated from the latest edition (1891) of my Dynamics. I may mention that in view of the publication of this book, the scope of my Dynamics has been some what enlarged in the latest edition by the addition of a chapter on Simple Harmonic Motion and the Pen dulum, of some articles on Units and other minor points. The Dynamical portion of the book is treated in a manner so different to that which has of late been customary in elementary text-books that I venture to ask Teachers and others who may use the book kindly to favor me with suggestions or criticisms. Of the value of this method Of treating the subject as an introduction to the study of Mechanics I have received the very highest testimony from many Teachers - but there must be in a new book of this kind many details capable of improvement and many faults of omission besides other defects. Any communication on the subject will be gratefully acknowledged by myself or by the Publishers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics, Comprehending Statics and Dynamics, With a Copious Collection of Mechanical Problems: With Plates The second section is on the theory Of the equilibrium Of l rigid body delivered in all its generality, and applied to a misty of examples. The closing chapter of this section is devoted to a subject of considerable practical importance, the strength and stress of beams for the principal materials of it, I am indebted to Mr. Barlow's experimental inquiries on this subject. These two sections comprise the theory Of Statics; the second part, or Dynamics, is divided into three sections; the first being on the rectilinear motion of a free point, the second on its curvilinear motion, and the third discussing the general theory Of the motion of a solid body. In the opening chapter of the first section, the fundamental equations of motion are deduced from simple and obvious considerations, and pains are taken to give a clear and dis tinct meaning to the several analytical expressions involved in these fundamental equations. All these are then fully illustrated by interesting practical exercises. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Mechanics, Comprehending Statics and Dynamics: With a Copious Collection of Mechanical Problems; Intended for the Use of Mathematical Students in Schools and Universities; With Numerous Plates A body subjected to the action of a force or moving influ ence, ought, necessarily, to move in the direction of that force; towards it, if the force draw or attract it, and from it, if the force push or repel it. Hence, it is the tendency of a body influenced by a single force applied to it at rest to move in a straight direction. But if to the same point two equal and directly opposite forces are applied, the tendency\ to motion in one direction being equal to the tendency in the opposite direction, the point will necessarily remain at rest, and will be as much prepared to obey the influence of any third force as it was before the two counterbalancing forces, of which we have just spoken, were applied. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Text-Book of Dynamics and Hydrostatics The design of this Text-book is to explain all that is usually included in a first course of Dynamics. In accordance with the now common acceptation of the term, I have called Dynamics the Science of Force. The book therefore treats of what was formerly, and occasionally still is, called Theoretical Mechanics. Great pains have been taken with the early chapters, which deal with the fundamental principles of Dynamics and with the subject of units. Throughout the book every important proposition is fol lowed by numerical examples fully worked out, and by others which are left as exercises for the student. These examples have been taken from examination papers set in the South Kensington, Civil Service, and University Examinations. Specimen Examination Papers are given at the end of the book.
