Book excerpt: This research was performed to obtain information on the behavior of shallow-buried cylinders subjected to static and blast loads in support of the task objective of gaining knowledge to provide guidelines for developing design methods for underground protective structures. It was especially desired to obtain data on the time and space variations of deflection, thrust, and moment under the two types of loading for purposes of making a comparison. The results show that the net arching across a flexible shallow-buried cylinder is small and that the maximum moment occurs at the bottom of the cylinder. Differences in response to static and blast loading are relatively small except for the crown, which deflects about twice as much under blast loading as under corresponding static loading. An analogy with the simple spring-mass system is drawn to explain this behavior. Information obtained on the influence of placing a low- strength isolating material in the soil over a cylinder indicates that such an expedient is of questionable benefit.

Book excerpt: The general objective of the investigation was to study experimentally the behavior to failure of flexible, horizontally oriented cylinders buried at various depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to either static or dynamic surface overpressures. Static and dynamic tests were conducted on 33 different cylinders, fabricated of high-yield-strength aluminum. Results indicated that collapse of the cylinders occurred while the strains in the cylinder walls were still in the elastic range. The cylinders buried at the shallow depths (zero to one-half cylinder diameter above the crown) collapsed by a catastrophic snap-through or caving of the crown. For the cylinders buried at depths of three-quarters to two cylinder diameters above the crown, the mode of collapse was an instantaneous elastic buckle that occurred at the spring line or invert of the cylinder. The collapse mode of the cylinders under dynamic overpressure was similar to that of the cylinders collapsing under static overpressure. The results of the investigation verified the applicability of an equation for predicting the static collapse overpressure for smooth-walled, horizontally oriented, buried cylindrical structures and entranceways. The hoop-compression theory was found to be applicable for analyzing the structural design to determine if the cylinder would collapse in the elastic range. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of this investigation was to study experimentally the elastic behavior of horizontally oriented, stiff cylinders buried at shallow depths in dense, dry sand and subjected to static surface overpressures. Static tests were conducted on nine different cylinders in the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station's Small (4-foot-diameter) Blast Load Generator (SBLG). The cylinders were fabricated from steel mechanical tubing having a 6-inch outside diameter and a specially isolated 12-inch-long test section. The nine test specimens comprised three groups of cylinders with wall thicknesses of 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 inch that corresponded to stiffnesses (EI/R3) of 170, 1,644, and 5,926 psi, respectively. In order to study the effects of burial depth, the first, second, and third cylinders of each group were tested at depths of 3, 6, and 9 inches, respectively. A total of 14 static tests were conducted, 9 on virgin soil samples and 5 on samples that had been previously loaded. The peak surface overpressure attained for all tests was approximately 1,000 psi. Measurements were made of cylinder hoop strain, vertical diameter change, soil stress, and surface overpressure. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: A list of the problems related to buried and submerged cylinders that are solved in the literature is given. This includes both rigid and flexible cylinders and both acoustical fluid and elastic solid surrounding media. The works of Baron and Yoshihara, in particular, are discussed at some length but only graphical data is cited due to the complex nature of the solutions. Using this data, an experimental program for the blast load generator is presented. Also included is a brief discussion of the methods of numerical integration of a function when a response to a step function is given. (Author).

An outline of the procedure for producing and measuring tangential strains and displacements of buried cylinders under static surface loading is included in this report. A discussion of some of the problems encountered during dynamic testing points out the need for information which is obtainable only through static tests. A statement of the assumptions used are made. A review of the literature is presented and a thorough outline of G. N. Savin's theoretical solution is made. A section on interpreting theoretical results and a series of graphs are provided.

Book excerpt: The overpressure required to cause collapse of the various cylinders was determined for as many depths of burial as the maximum overpressure would allow. The destructive tests demonstrate the great resistance to collapse imparted to a cylinder by burial. The nondestructive tests afford a comparison between the behavior of stiff and flexible cylinders as the depth of burial and the overpressure are changed. Two zones of burial, deep and shallow, are defined. These zones depend on the rigidity of the cylinder and the magnitude of the overpressure.

Book excerpt: "This report presents results of an experimental and numerical investigation into the response of partially-confined, thin-walled, stainless steel cylinders subjected to internal blast loading. "Partial-confinement" refers to an enclosure that may retain a significant, quasi-static pressure following an internal explosion, while "thin-walled" implies that the cylinder wall thickness is small relative to other geometric dimensions. The cylinder deformation is used to gauge the level of blast damage. The chosen cylinders are of length l = 300mm, inner radius a = 150mm, and wall thickness h = 2mm, and cut from seamless 304 stainless steel pipe. Partial-confinement is achieved by keeping one end of the cylinders closed in all tests. The experimental tests are conducted on the horizontal ballistic pendulum at the Blast Impact and Survivability Research Unit (BISRU), University of Cape Town. The blasts are generated by detonating radially-centred, spherical PE4 charges inside the cylinders. The charge mass is varied between 20g and 75g at two axial charge positions, specifically 150mm and 225mm, relative to the closed end. These axial positions are denoted 0.5 l and 0.75 l respectively. Polystyrene annuli are used to position the charges within the cylinders, and the influence of this polystyrene on the cylinder deformation is briefly investigated as an additional parameter. Details are presented of the development of an LS-DYNA Release 6.0.0 computational model that simulates the cylinder response to blast loading. Several 1D and 2D preliminary simulations and convergence studies are presented, the results of which inform the mesh sizes in the final model. The air and explosive are modelled using solid Arbitrary- Lagrange-Euler (ALE) elements, and the cylinders are modelled using Lagrange solids. Since the cylinders and explosive are all circular in section, the simulations are performed in 2D axisymmetry to reduce computational expense."

Book excerpt: In this paper the problem of a cylinder buried in sand and subjected to a uniform surface loading is considered. In particular the theoretical static solution of Savin together with the dynamic solution of Yoshihara are compared with Robinson's experimental results. Stresses, displacements, and accelerations are presented in graphical and tabular form.
