Book excerpt: A continuation of research on the static aeroelastic analysis of a generic wing configuration is presented. Results of the study of the asymmetric oblique wing model developed by Rockwell International, in conjunction with the NASA Oblique Wing Research Aircraft Program, are reported. The capability to perform static aeroelastic analyses of an oblique wing at arbitrary skew positions is demonstrated by applying the MSC/NASTRAN static analysis scheme modified by the aerodynamic influence coefficient matrix created by the NASA Ames aerodynamic panel codes. The oblique wing is studied at two skew angles, and in particular, the capability to calculate 3-D thickness effects on the aerodynamic properties of the wing is investigated. The ability to model asymmetric wings in both subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers is shown. The aerodynamic influence coefficient matrix computed by the external programs is inserted in MSC/NASTRAN static aeroelasticity analysis run stream to compute the aeroelastic deformation and internal forces. Various aerodynamic coefficients of the oblique wing were computed for two Mach numbers, 0.7 and 1.4, and the angle of attach -5 through 15 deg. Book excerpt: Aeroelastic and structural dynamic phenomena play an important role in many facets of engineering. In particular, an understanding of these disciplines is essential to the design of aircraft and space vehicles. This text provides an introduction to structural dynamics and aeroelasticity, with an emphasis on conventional aircraft. The primary areas considered are structural dynamics, static aeroelasticity, and dynamic aeroelasticity. The structural dynamics material emphasizes vibration, the modal representation, and dynamic response. Aeroelastic phenomena discussed include divergence, aileron reversal, airload redistribution, unsteady aerodynamics, flutter, and elastic tailoring. Both exact and approximate solution methodologies are stressed. More than one hundred illustrations and tables help clarify the text, while upwards of fifty problems enhance student learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads, SecondEdition is an updated new edition offering comprehensivecoverage of the main principles of aircraft aeroelasticity andloads. For ease of reference, the book is divided into three partsand begins by reviewing the underlying disciplines of vibrations, aerodynamics, loads and control, and then goes on to describesimplified models to illustrate aeroelastic behaviour and aircraftresponse and loads for the flexible aircraft before introducingsome more advanced methodologies. Finally, it explains howindustrial certification requirements for aeroelasticity and loadsmay be met and relates these to the earlier theoretical approachesused. Key features of this new edition include: Uses a unified simple aeroelastic model throughout thebook Major revisions to chapters on aeroelasticity Updates and reorganisation of chapters involving FiniteElements Some reorganisation of loads material Updates on certification requirements Accompanied by a website containing a solutions manual, andMATLAB® and SIMULINK® programs that relate to the modelsused For instructors who recommend this textbook, a series oflecture slides are also available Introduction to Aircraft Aeroelasticity and Loads, SecondEdition is a must-have reference for researchers andpractitioners working in the aeroelasticity and loads fields, andis also an excellent textbook for senior undergraduate and graduatestudents in aerospace engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This is the first monograph devoted to the foundation of the theory of composite anisotropic thin-walled beams and to its applications in various problems involving the aeronautical/aerospace, helicopter, naval and mechanical structures. Throughout the theoretical part, an effort was made to provide the treatment of the subject by using the equations of the 3-D elasticity theory. Non-classical effects such as transverse shear, warping constraint, anisotropy of constituent materials yielding the coupling of twist-bending (lateral), bending (transversal)-extension have been included and their implications have been thoroughly analyzed. Thermal effects have been included and in order to be able to circumvent their deleterious effects, functionally graded materials have been considered in their construction. Implications of the application of the tailoring technique and of the active feedback control on free vibration, dynamic response, instability and aeroelasticity of such structures have been amply investigated. Special care was exercised throughout this work to address and validate the adopted solution methodologies and the obtained results against those available in the literature and obtained via numerical or experimental means.
