The island’s identity has in part been defined in opposition to the city, its physical and cultural differences, and the perception of neglect by city government. It has long been whiter, wealthier, less populated, and more politically conservative. And despite many attempts over the years, Staten Island is not connected by the subway to any of the other four boroughs. Kenneth M. Gold argues that the lack of a subway connection has deeply shaped Staten Island’s history and identity. He chronicles decades of recurrent efforts to build a rail link, using this history to explore the borough’s fraught relationship with New York City as a whole. The Forgotten Borough ranges from when Staten Island first contemplated joining the city in the 1890s to the opening of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in 1964, highlighting pivotal moments when the construction of a subway appeared possible. The economics and engineering of tunnel construction, the difficulty of uniting Staten Islanders around a single solution, competition from the other boroughs, and resistance from powerful corporations and public authorities all undermined a rapid transit connection. Gold demonstrates that the failure to establish a rail link during this period caused Staten Island to diverge culturally, demographically, and politically from the other four boroughs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History Story Legend of the Old King's Highway: Now the Richmond Road, Staten Island Staten Island, lying as it does opposite the entrance of New York Harbor, was naturally visited by the early explorers and, as its convenience and fertility were great, it was soon apportioned among the first Settlers. Verrazano discovered the Island in Henry Hudson, on September 2, 1609, when he called it Staaten Eylandt in honor of the States General of the Netherlands, in whose interests his expedition was sent out. The Indians were quickly evicted and few, if any, of their traditions remain, though evidences of their former occupancy are found at many points. Without any idea of private ownership in land - or probably much understanding of what they were doing - they sold the Island as often as a purchaser could be found who would pay a few copper kettles or bright colored blankets: First to Michael Pauw, in 1630, the Island having been included in a grant to Pauw by the Dutch proprietors. He called his possessions Pavonia. Other proprietors were David Petersen de Vries, 1639 Cornelis Melyn, 1641. There was trouble with the Indians during these early days, due largely to harsh treatment at the hands of the white man. In 1641 and again in 1655 the Indians swept the Island of white settlers, killing those who were not fortunate enough to escape. Being fourth-generation-born Staten Islanders, my brother and I had a special sense of being native early on. Its photos - many of ancient structures from the 1700's - were powerful images that made "the old" come to life. Once we latched on to our budding interest in history, we never let go, and it eventually demanded that we follow through; not only to learn the history of our family, but of Staten Island as well. Unwittingly, the journey began by collecting newspaper stories and images over time. Eventually we made our way to the reference section of our libraries and museum archives where we came to know who the really good borough historians were, and their works. Eventually we gave motion to what we had learned and collected over the years by taking this legacy "on the road" - by car and eventually on foot - to visit the subject matter "in person." We created our own tours and saw a certain value in walking the old native Indian trails that became the Island's first roads, so they could fully speak their history to us. In doing so, we literally covered hundreds of miles paying homage to the place we live and love! This passionate pursuit, in retrospect, became an excellent journey that needed to be shared.
