Book excerpt: When did we lose our right to be lazy, unhealthy, and politically incorrect? Move over Big Brother! An insidious new group has inserted itself into American politics. They are the nannies—not the stroller-pushing set but an invasive band of do-gooders who are subtly and steadily stripping us of our liberties, robbing us of the inalienable right to make our own decisions, and turning America into a nation of children. As you read this, countless busybodies across the nation are rolling up their sleeves to do the work of straightening out your life. Certain Massachusetts towns have banned school-yard tag. San Francisco has passed laws regulating the amount of water you should use in dog bowls. The mayor of New York City has french fries and doughnuts in his sights. In some parts of California, smoking is prohibited . . . outside. The government, under pressure from the nanny minority, is twisting the public’s arm into obedience. Playground police, food fascists, anti-porn crusaders —whether they're legislating morality or wellbeing—nannies are popping up all over America. In the name of health, safety, decency, and—shudder—good intentions, these ever-vigilant politicians and social activists are dictating what we eat, where we smoke, what we watch and read, and whom we marry. Why do bureaucrats think they know what's better for us than we do? And are they selectively legislating in the name of political expediency? For instance, why do we ban mini-motorbikes, responsible for five deaths each year, and not skiing, which accounts for fifty deaths each year? Why is medical marijuana, a substance yet to claim a single life, banned and not aspirin, which accounts for about 7,600 deaths? Exhaustively researched, sharply observed, and refreshingly lucid, Nanny Sate looks at the myriad ways we are turning the United States into a soulless and staid nation—eroding not only our personal freedoms but our national character.

Book excerpt: In his new book, economist Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of "nanny state" policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It's time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes - decent wages, good jobs and affordable health care. Dean Baker is co-director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research.

Book excerpt: 'He is as funny as Bryson and as wise as Orwell' Observer It was the spirit of our finest hour, the backbone of our post-war greatness, and it promoted some of the boldest and most brilliant schemes this isle has ever produced: it was the Welfare State, and it made you and I. But now it's under threat, and we need to save it. In this timely and provocative book, Stuart Maconie tells Britain’s Welfare State story through his own history of growing up as a northern working class boy. What was so bad about properly funded hospitals, decent working conditions and affordable houses? And what was so wrong about student grants, free eye tests and council houses? And where did it all go so wrong? Stuart looks toward Britain’s future, making an emotional case for believing in more than profit and loss; and championing a just, fairer society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From propaganda released by the Third Reich to legislation passed in more than fifty nations, smoking is one of society's favorite targets. While the public goes along with persecuting smokers, Theodore J. King is here to tell us why we shouldn't. In this book, which does not advocate smoking, King surveys smoking bans in the United States, England, and Ireland, documenting their effects on society and commerce. King interviews many people, including members of the medical community. King takes his arguments further, showing how and why bans on smoking extend to other areas of our lives-how smokers are only the beginning. Anti-smokers represent an agenda that involves everything from personal property to the way you raise your children, what you eat, and your right to freedom of speech. Authoritarians have willing accomplices in the press and government to take power at the individual's expense. Learn how anti-smoking fanatics use tobacco control as an effective form of social engineering. King offers solutions so that smokers and non-smokers can be accommodated in a free society, where it must never be a crime to smoke in a bar, in a car, in the open air, in a restaurant, or at home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why the title, Freedom, Common Sense, and the Nanny State? Freedom is the individuals ability to choose. The more choices one has in life, the greater ones freedom. America is world-famous as the Land of the Free. Common sense is the stuff wise decisions are based upon. Freedom and common senseand lots of good, old-fashioned ingenuityhave built the greatest nation the world has ever known, the United States of America. But freedom can be frustrating, because it allows for philosophers and fools. And common sense is not as plentiful as one might hope. We Americans are currently embroiled in a continuing culture warself-reliance vs. Social Justice. Social Justice is liberal code for the Nanny Stategovernment supervision from cradle to grave. Where has freedom gone when a few bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., can dictate to more than 300 million Americans what kinds of light bulbs and toilets we can use, to the quality of health care we must accept? And where is the common sense in SPENDING our way out of bankruptcy? May freedom and common sense replace the Nanny State in America before it is too late.

Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence Paying privately for childcare is a growing phenomenon worldwide, a trend mirrored in Sweden despite the prevalence there of publicly funded daycare. This book combines theories of family practices, care and childhood studies with the personal perspectives of nannies, au pairs, parents and children to provide new understandings of what constitutes care in nanny families. The authors investigate the ways in which all the participants experience the caring situation, and expose the possibilities and problems of nanny and au pair care. Their study illuminates the ways in which paid domestic care workers 'do' family and care; in doing so, it contributes to wider political and scientific discussions of inequalities at the global and local level, reproduced in and between families, in the context of rapidly changing welfare states.

Book excerpt: Everyone knows what a nanny is, yet the role of the modern nanny is still widely misunderstood. State of the Nanny provides a clear-eyed assessment of today's nannying industry and its potential for improvement. Essential reading for nannies and those who employ them. "Louise Dunham is THE expert on putting the CARE into childcare. State of the Nanny is a wonderful resource for families considering employing a nanny, and for nannies themselves. A thoroughly engaging book that eloquently discusses the political and personal whilst keeping the most important people - the children - as a highest value." -- Pinky McKay, lactation consultant and parenting advisor, and best selling author of Sleeping Like a Baby, Toddler Tactics, and other titles. "A timely call for recognition of nannies everywhere, but also for a return to an older set of values that enveloped our local societies and enabled working women for centuries to conduct their economic work outside of the home..." -- Jacalyn S Burke, author The Nanny Time Bomb - Navigating the crisis in child care From the Introduction: I've been working in the nanny industry for just under 30 years, a period in which organised child care both inside and outside the home have been through many ups and downs, and changed enormously. Much has changed for the better, but there is still plenty of room for improvement and it is very important that we continue to seek that improvement. That requires people who have informed opinions to speak out, and anyone who knows me knows that as well as my long experience in the industry, I'm rarely short of an opinion. This book is one way of expressing my opinions, which is why I've written it. When I reflect on the last 30 years, we are not as far along as I would have hoped. Progress is slow in a number of areas. With each change of federal or state government we get incremental change, but rarely anything bold. Sometimes there is a step back rather than forward. In some cases governments will create or clarify the laws - such as the requirement that nannies cannot operate as independent contractors - but then do little or nothing to implement those laws in practice. We have made some good ground in building the 'professional' status of nannies, though there is still an awful long road to travel on that issue. There is still not the necessary level of respect, support and understanding for the challenges that nannies face, the level of responsibility they take on and the fact that they earn their money and should be paid accordingly. The 'anyone can mind a child' mindset is still widespread and needs to be removed. Parents need to understand that to use untrained carers (usually in order to save money) is to compromise on their children's care, which is ultimately demeaning to the children themselves by tacitly saying that they are not important enough to be professionally cared for. This book is a call to arms on these and a number of other issues. My hope is that it will be read, discussed and debated by nannies, nanny agency operators and those who hire nannies. As the ancient Greek proverb says 'A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in'.

Book excerpt: As president of Washington's premier nanny placement agency, White House Nannies, Inc., Barbara Kline has spent the last twenty years handpicking and delivering nannies to elected officials, cabinet members, advisers to the President, and the media who report on their every move. In this hilarious account of her life in child care, Kline discloses the mayhem that ensues when these powerful parents find themselves at the mercy of tiny tyrants—and the nannies who offer their only hope of salvation. From finding the "perfect nanny" to firing the "perfect nanny," from refereeing mommy-nanny disputes to keeping mum about family secrets, Kline casts a keen eye on one of the most complicated relationships under the sun: that between extremely busy people and their nannies. Following the major events that launch powerful D.C. parents into parenthood (discovering they're pregnant; hiring a fabulous nanny; giving birth; hiring a second nanny in a pinch when the first one is nanny-napped), this book goes behind closed doors in our nation's capital to reveal the laughter—and, of course, the tears—involved when overworked professionals attempt to raise a child. The Nanny Diaries meets Primary Colors in this delightful ride on the bottle-and-bib-strewn Beltway.
