Download or read book Advances in Root Vegetables Research written by Prashant Kaushik and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-02-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root vegetables are the sections of underground plants that are harvested and consumed by humans for their nutritional value. They are found in a wide variety of plant species. Even though botany draws a distinction between real roots and non-roots, the term “root vegetable” refers to both kinds in the context of agriculture and cuisine, despite botany classifying genuine roots as separate from non-roots. Root vegetables are often storage organs that store energy in the form of carbohydrates. This book explores recent developments in root vegetable research against the background of current and impending environmental change.

Book Synopsis Integrated Nematode Management by : Richard A. Sikora
Download or read book Integrated Nematode Management written by Richard A. Sikora and published by Cabi. This book was released on 2021 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant parasitic nematodes are costly burdens of crop production, causing an estimated US$80 - 118 billion per year in damage to crops. They are associated with nearly every important agricultural crop, and are a significant constraint on global food security. Regulations on the use of chemical pesticides have resulted in growing interest in alternative methods of nematode control. Future changes in climate, cropping systems, food habits, as well as social and environmental factors also affect the options for nematode control. Taking a systematic crop by crop approach, this book: Outlines the economic importance of specific plant parasitic nematode problems on the major food and industrial crops. Presents the state-of-the-art management strategies that have been developed to reduce specific nematode impacts, and outlines their limitations. Contains case studies to illustrate impact in the field. Aims to anticipate future changes in nematode disease pressure that might develop as a result of climate change, and new cropping systems.

Book Synopsis The 1998 Floods in Bangladesh by : Carlo Del Ninno
Download or read book The 1998 Floods in Bangladesh written by Carlo Del Ninno and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1998,"the flood of the century" covered more than two-thirds of Bangladesh, causing crop losses of 2.04 million tons of rice, an amount equal to 10.45 percent of target production in 1998/99. This flood threatened the health and lives of millions through food shortages caused by crop failure, loss of purchasing power, and the spread of water-borne disease. Yet very few flood-related deaths occurred, and reportedly none was due to food shortages. This report, based on data from a survey of 757 rural households in seven flood-affected regions (thanas) conducted in November and December 1998 and on analysis of secondary data on food grain markets, describes how Government of Bangladesh policy, well-functioning private markets, household coping strategies, and donor and NGO interventions combined to avert a major food crisis. To further enhance its food security, Bangladesh needs continued investments in agricultural research, extension, roads, electricity and other rural infrastructure, policies promoting efficient markets, and programs to provide targeted transfers and credit to poor households.

This book was released on 2013-12-31 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India is emerging as one of the economic giants of the world, and is gaining international influence and global leadership as the world's largest democracy. India's performance will have far-reaching consequences on whether the economic awakening of the country, which began more than two decades ago, can become a good model to be emulated by other developing economies. This book is a collection of policy papers and data-sets for the 35 states and federal territories of India. With a comprehensive approach to competitiveness, the research done by Asia Competitiveness Institute (ACI) at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore takes into account different factors that collectively shape the ability of a nation to achieve substantial and inclusive economic development over a sustained period of time.ACI's methodology goes beyond rankings to conduct policy simulations on how each state or federal territory can improve its competitiveness. These policy simulations are a compelling value-added proposition enabling policymakers, industry leaders and administrators to identify relative challenges and opportunities, and to prioritise areas when crafting policies and development strategies.

Book Synopsis Breadfruit Production Guide by : Craig R. Elevitch
Download or read book Breadfruit Production Guide written by Craig R. Elevitch and published by Permanent Agriculture Resources. This book was released on 2014-01-31 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite increasing consumer demand and an imminent production surge in breadfruit, a number of barriers must be overcome in order to increase the market availability, distribution, and commercial competitiveness of breadfruit. Many growers have limited understanding of when a fruit is ready to harvest and how to best harvest and handle the fruit to ensure a high quality product is delivered to market. As with any perishable crop-producers must learn proper handling of breadfruit to optimize its value to consumers, and therefore its commercial value. Similarly, chefs and consumers also need essential information on handling and preparation of breadfruit. This comprehensive 36-page guide will help growers ensure that the existing and future breadfruit crop will be used on farm, in the marketplace, or in the consumer's kitchen. This second edition adds kitchen handling tips, nutritional information, and descriptions for three important breadfruit varieties.
