One morning, while trying to snap the perfect ocean sunrise photo for her mother, she slips off a rock at the edge of Toyama Bay, hits her head, and plunges into the sea—and in doing so, sets off an unexpected chain of events. When Lindsey comes to in the hospital, she learns that she owes her life to a young man named Ichiro—a local fisherman who also happens to be the older brother of one of her students. She begins to spend time with her lifesaver, and in the ensuing months, she becomes increasingly enmeshed in her new life: when she is not busy teaching, she splits her time between an apprenticeship with the local master sushi chef and going out fishing with Ichiro. As she and Ichiro grow closer, however, she also learns that not all is well in Hime, and she is drawn into a war to stop the town next door from overfishing their shared bay. Soon, she, Ichiro, and her pastrami-obsessed best friend, Judy—the person who talked Lindsey into coming to Japan in the first place—are spending all their free time working together to rescue the town. But when their efforts backfire, Hime gets closer to falling apart—putting Lindsey’s friends, her budding relationship with Ichiro, and her career in jeopardy. To save Hime, Lindsey realizes, she’ll have to become a true American fisherwoman and fight for her new home with everything she has.

Book Synopsis Primary Industries Facing Global Markets by : Frank Asche
Download or read book Primary Industries Facing Global Markets written by Frank Asche and published by Copenhagen Business School Press DK. This book was released on 2006 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Food producers and other producers of primary products such as forestry increasingly face international competition, and the markets for their products increasingly become globalized. This process can provide promising opportunities to reach new markets and to increase value added by marketing new products. But there are challenges though, as new competitors show up in the domestic markets and access to the retail outlets is denied .Norway is a country with a successful export oriented aquaculture industry and more protected forestry and agricultural sectors. This book explores some of the lessons learned from these sectors in coping with international competition and in exploiting the opportunities that are offered by more open markets. The perspectives adopted come from marketing, economics as well as multidisciplinary social sciences. Each perspective is essential to paint a reliable picture of the opportunities and challenges facing primary industries."
Book Synopsis Successful Fisheries Management by : Stephen Cunningham
Download or read book Successful Fisheries Management written by Stephen Cunningham and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book centres around seven case studies, ranging from the Pacific halibut fishery to traditional community-based management in India, from the Australian Northern prawn fishery to artisanal fishing in Senegal, and from co-management initiatives in Shetland, the management of hake fisheries in Namibia, to the Mauritanian fish trade, each of which demonstrates some facets of successful fisheries management. The failure of fisheries management has been widely analysed, its successes far less so. Successful Fisheries Management outlines ways to improve fisheries management, by drawing on successful management experience to identify the fundamentals of good practice. Given the multi-faceted nature of success, there is no unique recipe. The book suggests however that, for those involved in the development and promotion of more effective fisheries management, the major challenge is not to do the same things better, but to do them differently.
Book Synopsis Bioeconomic Modelling and Valuation of Exploited Marine Ecosystems by : J.C.J.M. van den Bergh
Download or read book Bioeconomic Modelling and Valuation of Exploited Marine Ecosystems written by J.C.J.M. van den Bergh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-19 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an environmental-economic analysis of exploited ecosystems with a clear policy orientation. The study moves beyond traditional economic fishery analysis in two respects. First, several theoretical and numerical models are offered that combine economic and ecological descriptions of fisheries. Second, valuation and stakeholder concerns are addressed in empirical analyses employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The approaches, models and policy insights are sufficiently general and innovative to interest a broad audience.
Book Synopsis Do Economists Make Markets? by : Donald MacKenzie
Download or read book Do Economists Make Markets? written by Donald MacKenzie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the globe, economists affect markets by saying what markets are doing, what they should do, and what they will do. Increasingly, experimental economists are even designing real-world markets. But, despite these facts, economists are still largely thought of as scientists who merely observe markets from the outside, like astronomers look at the stars. Do Economists Make Markets? boldly challenges this view. It is the first book dedicated to the controversial question of whether economics is performative--of whether, in some cases, economics actually produces the phenomena it analyzes. The book's case studies--including financial derivatives markets, telecommunications-frequency auctions, and individual transferable quotas in fisheries--give substance to the notion of the performativity of economics in an accessible, nontechnical way. Some chapters defend the notion; others attack it vigorously. The book ends with an extended chapter in which Michel Callon, the idea's main formulator, reflects upon the debate and asks what it means to say economics is performative. The book's insights and strong claims about the ways economics is entangled with the markets it studies should interest--and provoke--economic sociologists, economists, and other social scientists. In addition to the editors and Callon, the contributors include Marie-France Garcia-Parpet, Francesco Guala, Emmanuel Didier, Philip Mirowski, Edward Nik-Khah, Petter Holm, Vincent-Antonin Lépinay, and Timothy Mitchell.
