Im Laufe der Zeit geht die Zahl der starken Verben leicht zurück (Neubildungen von starken Verben gibt es nur in Ausnahmefällen) und die der schwachen Verben steigt an. Das liegt daran, dass alle Verben, die im Deutschen hinzukommen zukünftig schwach konjugiert werden sollen. Das Mittelhochdeutsche besaß über 300 starke Verben. Heute gibt es nur noch etwa 250 starke Verben im deutschen Wortschatz. Dabei sind die Verben, die am häufigsten gebraucht werden meist starke Verben. Die seltener vorkommenden Verben sind meist die schwachen Verben. Diese Arbeit soll starke und schwache Verben thematisieren. Insbesondere die Behandlung starker und schwacher Verben im Schulunterricht (in der Sekundarstufe 1) soll Untersuchungsgegenstand dieser Arbeit sein. Mein spezifisches Interesse für dieses Thema ergab sich aus der Überlegung, welche grammatischen Themen im Schulunterricht häufiger behandelt werden und welche seltener oder gar nicht. Es gibt eine Reihe von grammatischen Themen, die regelmäßig im Schulunterricht behandelt und von Schuljahr zu Schuljahr ständig wiederholt werden. Solche Themen sind zum Beispiel „die Satzglieder“ oder „dass mit s oder Doppel-s“ (siehe Kapitel 4). Ich beabsichtige nicht mit dieser Arbeit ein Thema zu behandeln, dass schon zum regelmäßigen Bestandteil des Grammatikunterrichts gehört. „Starke und schwache Verben“, so hatte ich den Anschein, gehören eher zu den weniger behandelten Themen im deutschen Grammatikunterricht, auch wenn dieses Thema für den Erwerb einer Fremdsprache unabkömmlich ist. Dies werde ich insbesondere in Kapitel 4 thematisieren. Vorab werde ich kurz den Begriff Verb allgemein erläutern. Außerdem beschreibe ich kurz das System der verschiedenen Kategorien, nach denen ein Verb klassifiziert werden kann. Später gehe ich dann besonders auf starke und schwache Verben, deren Bedeutung und Funktion ein (Kapitel 3). Auch die Darstellung starker und schwacher Verben in Lehrbüchern ist Teil des Kapitels 3. Eine Unterrichtseinheit zum Thema in Kapitel 5 soll zeigen, dass sich auch zu grammatischen Themen abwechslungsreiche Unterrichtsstunden gestalten lassen. Ein wichtiges Ziel, das in diesem Unterrichtsentwurf erreicht werden soll ist, dass die Unterrichtsstunde so gestaltet wird, dass sich Schüler bei diesem Thema nicht langweilen.

The work is based on a broad sample of 193 languages, and examines this long neglected phenomenon from a typological perspective. In addition to identifying types of suppletion which occur cross-linguistically, the study brings to light areal patterns of the occurrence of suppletive forms in verb paradigms. Several hypotheses as regards the diachronic development of suppletive forms are presented as well. The author also seeks to explore the methodological issues of evaluating the frequency of linguistic features in large language samples by introducing a method of weighting languages according to their genetic relatedness. All figures obtained in this way are compared to the proportions yielded by more familiar counting methods, and the results and implications of the different procedures are compared and discussed throughout.

The consensus in many fields is that language is well designed for its purpose, and became so either through natural selection or by virtue of non-biological constraints on how language must be structured. Andrew Carstairs-McCarthy argues that in certain crucial respects language is not optimally designed. This can be seen, he suggests, in the existence of not one but two kinds of grammatical organization - syntax and morphology - and in the morphological and morpho-phonological complexity which leads to numerous departures from the one-form-one-meaning principle. Having discussed the issue of good and bad design in a wider biological context, the author shows that conventional explanations for the nature of morphology do not work. Its poor design features arose, he argues, from two characteristics present when the ancestors of modern humans had a vocabulary but no grammar. One of these was a synonymy-avoidance expectation, while the other was an articulatory and phonological apparatus that encouraged the development of new synonyms. Morphology developed in response to these conflicting pressures. In this stimulating and carefully argued account Professor McCarthy offers a powerful challenge to conventional views of the relationship between syntax and morphology, to the adaptationist view of language evolution, and to the notion that language in some way reflects 'laws of form'.
