Book Synopsis Stargazing: Past and Present by : Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer
Download or read book Stargazing: Past and Present written by Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some sciences are of yesterday; others stretch far back into the youth of time. Among these there is one of the beginnings of which we have lost all trace, so coeval was it with the commencement of man’s history; and that science is the one of which we have to trace the instrumental developments. Although our chief task is to enlarge upon the modern, it will not be well, indeed it is impossible, to neglect the old, because, if for no other reason, the welding of old and new has been so perfect, the conquest of the unknown so gradual. The best course therefore will be to distribute the different fields of thought and work into something like marked divisions, and to commence by dividing the whole time during which man has been observing the heavens into two periods, which we will call the Pre-telescopic and the Telescopic Ages. The work of the Pre-telescopic age of course includes all the early observations made by the unaided eye, while that of the Telescopic age includes those of vastly different kinds, which that instrument had rendered possible; so that it divides itself naturally into some three or four sub-ages of extreme importance. It is unnecessary to say one word here on the importance of the invention of the telescope; it is well for the present purpose, however, to emphasize the further distinctions we obtain when we consider the various additions made from time to time to the telescope. The Telescope, in fact, was comparatively little used until astronomy annexed that important branch of physics to its aid which gave us a Clock—a means of dividing time in the most accurate manner. In quite recent times the addition of the Camera to the Telescope marks an important advance; indeed the importance of photography is not yet recognised in the way it should be. Then, again, there is the addition of the Spectroscope, which, though it is only now beginning to yield us rich fruit, really dates from the beginning of the present century. This is an ally to the telescope of such power that he would be a bold man who would venture to set bounds to the conquests their combined forces will make. Now not only is it essential for the proper understanding of the instruments used nowadays in every observatory, by every stargazer, to go back to the origin of the science of observation, but in no other way can one fully see in what way the new instrumental methods have added themselves to the old ones. Further, it is of importance to go back to the actual old field of work in which the geometric conceptions which grew up in the minds of the men of ancient time—conceptions which we are now utilizing and extending—were gradually elaborated. To do this, there is no better way than to dwell very briefly on the work actually done by the old astronomers.

It shows you how to understand and enjoy the cosmos, building your practical astronomy skills from the basics to more advanced techniques. Book Synopsis A Stargazing Program for Beginners by : Jamie Carter
Download or read book A Stargazing Program for Beginners written by Jamie Carter and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-11-20 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sets out a simple month-by-month program to reveal all of the night sky's biggest and most beautiful secrets in just one year – and with only a few hours of stargazing each month By investing just an hour a week and $50 in binoculars, it’s possible to learn a few simple techniques and quickly gain a real insight into the night sky's ever-changing patterns – and what they tell us about Earth, the seasons and ourselves. Searching more for a learned appreciation of nature and our exact place within the cosmos than academic scientific knowledge, science and travel writer Jamie Carter takes the reader on a 12 month tour of the night sky's incredible annual rhythms that say so much about Earth. During the journey he learns about the celestial mechanics at work in the skies above that are – to the beginner – almost beyond belief. As well as the vital constellations and clusters, and the weird and wonderful nebulas, he searches out “dark sky destinations” across the globe that help increase knowledge and give a new perspective on familiar night sky sights. On the journey he witnesses a solar eclipse and grapples with star-charts, binoculars, smartphone apps, telescopes, spots satellites and attempts basic astro-photography. By year's end, the reader will be able to glance at the night sky from anywhere on the planet and tell what direction he or she is facing, what time it is, where all the planets are and even where the Galactic Center Point is.

Book Synopsis Discover the Stars by : Richard Berry
Download or read book Discover the Stars written by Richard Berry and published by Three Rivers Press. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For everyone who has looked up at the stars on a clear night and longed to know more about them, here is the perfect introduction and guide to discovering the stars. Discover the Stars leads you on a tour of all the stars and constellations visible with the naked eye and introduces you to deep-sky objects that can be seen with binoculars or a simple telescope. The tour is conducted by the editor of Astronomy magazine, Richard Berry, whose two-color, computer-plotted sky maps and clear instructions make stargazing fun and productive from your first night out. The heart of Discover the Stars is two sections of big, beautiful sky maps and charts. The first section features twelve maps that show the entire sky overhead as it appears during each month of the year. These outline all the constellations visible anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, and the accompanying text reveals the rich ancient mythology that surrounds the star groups. The second section is made up of twenty-three star charts that depict smaller regions of the sky in great detail. These charts give the names of key stars and lead you to fascinating features such as stars with unusual colors, double stars, variable stars, nebulae, and galaxies. Separate chapters cover basics, such as how the stars move through the sky, how to find your way around the moon and the planets, making an astronomer's flashlight, and choosing and using a telescope -- all in terms that are easy to grasp and remember. Discover the Stars is the perfect introduction to the heavens, simple enough to be useful if you're just starting out but packed with enough information to keep you learning and enjoying the stars for years to come. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Download or read book Project STAR written by Harold P. Coyle and published by Kendall Hunt. This book was released on 2001 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universe in Your Hands Project STAR (Science Teaching through its Astronomical Roots) is an astronomy course that also teaches real-world math and physics. Project STAR capitalizes on students' inherent interest in the limitless universe that surrounds them. This second edition uses a new approach that is consistent with the philosophy of the authors: students learn science better by making measurements and observations than by memorizing "facts." Each chapter begins with questions to test preheld views on certain subjects. Students then use measurements and observations to explore the models in the chapters. Questions are sprinkled throughout the book to test understanding along with cartoons to leaven the learning with humor. Hands-on activities play an essential role in this 1-year course. In completing these hands-on activities, students will: make observations of the skies build models use models to explain observations and make predictions find everyday applications for such models The Student Text for Project STAR, Second Edition includes updated information, is easier to use and visually more appealing. The material is laid out with new illustrations for greater clarity and understanding. A color plate section supports activities and text related to the study of spectra. A reference section has also been added. It lists astronomy resources on the web. The Astronomy Explorer CD-ROM is included with the Student Text. This interactive CD-ROM contains movies and animations related to astronomy. The student exercises provide an excellent foundation for understanding the complexities of the universe. A glossary of terms is also part of the CD.
