Corey, New York Times bestselling author of Abaddon’s Gate “[Jason M.] Hough’s first novel combines the rapid-fire action and memorable characters associated with Joss Whedon’s short-lived Firefly TV series with the accessibility and scientific acumen of [James S. A.] Corey’s ‘Expanse’ series.”—Library Journal (starred review) “The best part about alien stories is their mystery, and Jason Hough understands that like no other. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tet, 1968. That was the Vietnam War's D Day, Battle of the Bulge, Iwo Jima, Crossing of the Rhine. In a series of battles in all parts of the country, condensed mostly in a three day span - although a few fights (Khe Sanh, Hue City) lasted longer - the Viet Cong were effectively destroyed as a fighting entity, and the North Vietnamese Army was severely damaged. Tet, 1968 was also when the United States lost the Vietnam War. In THE SQUAD one fourteen man US Marine Corps rifle squad led by Sergeant George Bingham is in a routine ambush outside a remote fire base in northern I Corps, close to the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam. This is the night before a scheduled cease fire for the Tet holiday; they don't expect any problems. When their fire base is unexpectedly hit by a superior force of North Vietnamese, the squad loses communication, and the Marines on the fire base are driven back. Unfortunately, the loss of communications means the squad doesn't get the word to pull out of their ambush and rejoin the rest of their company for the withdrawal. Their failure to rejoin their company leaves the other Marines thinking they were found and wiped out by the North Vietnamese. Morning finds the fourteen Marines not dead or even wounded, but alone deep behind North Vietnamese lines. Without knowing what's going on, or where friendly units are, Sergeant Bingham and his Marines must find a way to evade contact with the thousands of enemy soldiers, and reconnect with other Marines. Complicating matters, they started out with only enough supplies on the ambush to last overnight. Who are these Marines? How do they relate to each other? In order to tell their story properly, LtCol R. W. Thoreau, the fictional narrator whose After Action Reports and historical analysis are spread throughout the novel, begins the story on March 9, 1965, the day Bingham learns of the Marine landing at Da Nang, which was the beginning of the American ground war in Vietnam. Bingham drops out of college at the end of the term and enlists in the Marines. The members of this squad, as is the case in all squads, have strong friendships - as well as conflicts among the Marines.

This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's six months since Combined Action Platoon T-9 was established in Hou Bun village. Six months of nearly-nightly battles between the Marines and Popular Forces of CAP Tango Niner and Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army units. The VC and NVA almost always lost those encounters. After months of losing fighters and supply trains, and an inability, despite repeated attempts, to overrun and wipe out Tango Niner, the VC and NVA decided to take their operations elsewhere. Peace had come to Hou Bun village. But there was one more thing the Marines had to do. Two years earlier, the VC had kidnapped the son of Phao Houng, the PF platoon commander. Houng found out where his son was being held as a slave laborer. Five Marines and one PF go on a mission to rescue the boy. It's one of the most audacious and dangerous missions ever undertaken by Americans in the war: Nine-year-old Phao Kha Ai was being held in the A Shau Valley, one of the strongest VC and NVA bases in South Vietnam. The Marines and PFs of CAP T-9 couldn't pull it off totally by themselves, they needed help. They got it from Chief Petty Officer Ossie Slover, the cousin of Tango Niner's Corporal "Big Louie" Slover; from Bobbie Harder, a civilian employee of the Marines in Da Nang--and girlfriend of Tango Niner's Corporal "Tex" Randall; from Ensign Lily, a navy friend of Second Lieutenant "Scrappy" Burrison, Tango Niner's commanding officer; and from Lieutenant (j.g.) Reeves, a helicopter pilot and friend of Lily's. It's a bodacious and outrageous mission, that can only be pulled off by a small team of determined Marines and PFs, and their friends who supported them.

Book Synopsis Starfist: Kingdom's Fury by : David Sherman
Download or read book Starfist: Kingdom's Fury written by David Sherman and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A few good Marines beat the fierce, fanatical aliens once before. But that was a skirmish–not a full-scale invasion. The truth is out. No longer are the Skinks just a horrible secret haunting the Marines of Company L. Now the aliens are all-too-real invaders whose savage attacks have devastated planet Kingdom, a world of squabbling religions where the men of the 34th FIST confront a desperate situation. Cities that haven’t already been reduced to rubble are under siege, while starving refugees roam the land. And still the Skinks come, rising from stinking primordial swamps to slake their thirst for slaughter, armed with an uncanny ability to locate the enemy and with weapons so deadly that a single blast can drop a warplane or a decimate a squad. It’s painfully evident that 34th FIST is no match for these near-invincible killers, which is why third platoon’s been ordered to whip the citizens of Kingdom into fighting shape. With their backs to the wall and time running out, there’s only one way the Marines can turn these timid, quarrelsome men into warriors: Take the battle to the enemy. It’s a brilliant strategy, sure to succeed–if it doesn’t get them killed first. . . .
