Book excerpt: For thousands of years humans looked to the stars for navigation, deities, personality insights, predictions and omens about the future. What can we learn from these heavenly bodies? The Bible says that the Lord placed them there as faithful witnesses to mark the seasons, the days, and the times. The Bible also tells of Wise Men from the east that followed a star to Bethlehem to find a king. What other events might be revealed by the movement of the stars and planets? Is there more hidden in the stars? Is there a Star Code?

Book excerpt: In the first decades of the 21st-century, humanity manages to establish communication with other intelligent beings. Apparently harmless, the contact progressively strays towards being something far more dangerous than anybody ever imagined. It will not be as we had expected. "Starcode" tackles a star topic of science fiction with a radically original plot, whose development and outcome will surprise the reader, as much the aficionado of the genre as one who is simply in search of an entertaining and addictive book. As described online: "Starcode is a kind of high voltage ‘Contact' by Carl Sagan which will delight readers of science fiction. A fresh touch for science fiction, in a light read, whose ending and epilogue will make you reflect on the entire book. Recommended!" Carter Damon is an author who has sold thousands of books through Amazon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massive stars occupy an exceptional place in general astrophysics. They trigger many if not all of the important processes in galactic evolution whereas due to their intrinsic brightness, they offer the (only until now) possibility to study the stellar content and stellar behaviour in distant galaxies. The last, say, 25 years, massive stars have been the subject of numerous meetings discussing the influence of massive stars on population synthesis, the number distribution of different types of massive stars, the LBV phenomenon, WR stars, X-ray binaries, stellar winds in massive stars, chemical pecularities in massive stars, supernova explosions of massive stars and the important SN1987A event, the influence of massive stars and chemical evolution of galaxies. It is clear that without a theory of stellar evolution, the study of these topics loses a lot of its significance. Massive star evolution therefore got a chance in these meetings, but rarely as a prime subject. The state of the art, the physical processes and the uncertainties in stellar evolution were barely touched. Even more, the influence of close binaries in all these massive star meetings slowly disappeared the last, say, 13 years without any scientific justification, although a significant fraction of stars occurs in close binaries with periods small enough so that both components will interact during their evolution. Denying the binaries or not discussing their influence on results and conclusions, makes the latter very uncertain or even completely unreliable.

Book excerpt: Stars are mostly found in binary and multiple systems, with at least 50% of all solar-like stars having companions; this fraction approaches 100% for the most massive stars. A large proportion of these systems interact and alter the structure and evolution of their components, leading to exotic objects such as Algol variables, blue stragglers and other chemically peculiar stars, but also to phenomena such as non-spherical planetary nebulae, supernovae and gamma-ray bursts. While it is understood that binaries play a critical role in the Initial Mass Function, the interactions among binary systems significantly affect the dynamical evolution of stellar clusters and galaxies. This interdisciplinary volume presents results from state-of-the-art models and observations aimed at studying the impact of binaries on stellar evolution in resolved and unresolved populations. Serving as a bridge between observational and theoretical astronomy, it is a comprehensive review for researchers and advanced students of astrophysics.

Did the Masons encode messages in walls—and even in the street plan of Washington, D.C.? Does the Hebrew Bible conceal hidden mysteries? Ingenious methods for encoding secrets have taken many amazing turns through the ages, from the military signals the Romans flashed from hilltop to hilltop, to the computer codes that guard your cash at the ATM. Pierre Berloquin, one of France’s leading puzzle book authors, takes you on a tour of them all in a book full of astonishing historical insights. With more than 150 brain-teasing problems for readers to solve for themselves, this is a journey beyond the gee-whiz and deep into the how-to of codes, ciphers, and other secret communication systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of blue straggler stars, which appear younger, hotter, and more massive than their siblings, is at odds with a simple picture of stellar evolution. Such stars should have exhausted their nuclear fuel and evolved long ago to become cooling white dwarfs. They are found to exist in globular clusters, open clusters, dwarf spheroidal galaxies of the Local Group, OB associations and as field stars. This book summarises the many advances in observational and theoretical work dedicated to blue straggler stars. Carefully edited extended contributions by well-known experts in the field cover all the relevant aspects of blue straggler stars research: Observations of blue straggler stars in their various environments; Binary stars and formation channels; Dynamics of globular clusters; Interpretation of observational data and comparison with models. The book also offers an introductory chapter on stellar evolution written by the editors of the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of China as a future major participant in international aviation raises some interesting questions, especially from a strategic policy perspective. The progressive shift from a command to a mixed market economy under the central leadership of the Beijing administration now finds itself faced with the needs to balance a strategic duality in the context of the role of China's civil aviation industry. In a very real sense this situation requires the design and accommodation of a growing role for China's mainstream carriers within the operational context of the need to meet the complex challenges from increasing international market competition. In parallel with such major external pressures, central government must also accommodate domestic priorities with regard to internal economic development. The fruits of economic progress as a function of market reform are commonly understood to have positively reshaped the live of only a proportion of the national population to date. The need to create greater access to economic growth for the more remote western and northern provinces has required that the rapid development of airports become a factor in the planning and allocation of developmental priorities. To complicate matters further, prevailing requirements of airspace defence remain a major parameter within the larger context of national aviation policy. This book explores the political, economic and strategic issues raised by the inevitable tension between the domestic and international aspects of Beijing's current civil aviation strategy. It also seeks to identify some of the problems that face the industry as a key sector in the larger context of macroeconomic reform and the further pressures now being exerted by China's membership of the WTO.

This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Binary systems of stars are as common as single stars. Stars evolve primarily by nuclear reactions in their interiors, but a star with a binary companion can also have its evolution influenced by the companion. Multiple star systems can exist stably for millions of years, but can ultimately become unstable as one star grows in radius until it engulfs another. This volume, first published in 2006, discusses the statistics of binary stars; the evolution of single stars; and several of the most important kinds of interaction between two (and even three or more) stars. Some of the interactions discussed are Roche-lobe overflow, tidal friction, gravitational radiation, magnetic activity driven by rapid rotation, stellar winds, magnetic braking and the influence of a distant third body on a close binary orbit. A series of mathematical appendices gives a concise but full account of the mathematics of these processes.
