Book excerpt: Stanhope Alexander Forbes has always been known as 'the Father of the Newlyn School'. His presence as its figure-head, guiding hand and representative to the wider world made him famous but this book celebrates his own work - the paintings he made through a long life lived in and around the fishing village of Newlyn. It marks the anniversary of seventy years since his death in 1947 with the largest survey of his paintings ever produced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the first studies of its kind, Orphan texts seeks to insert the orphan, and the problems its existence poses, in the larger critical areas of the family and childhood in Victorian culture. In doing so, Laura Peters considers certain canonical texts alongside lesser known works from popular culture in order to establish the context in which discourses of orphanhood operated. The study argues that the prevalence of the orphan figure can be explained by considering the family. The family and all it came to represent - legitimacy, race and national belonging - was in crisis. In order to reaffirm itself the family needed a scapegoat: it found one in the orphan figure. As one who embodied the loss of the family, the orphan figure came to represent a dangerous threat to the family; and the family reaffirmed itself through the expulsion of this threatening difference. Orphan texts will be of interest to final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and those interested in the areas of Victorian literature, Victorian studies, postcolonial studies, history and popular culture.

Weisberg reveals that the Naturalists went beyond Impressionism in both technique and subject matter. 307 illustrations, 86 in full color.

Book excerpt: First major study of the most significant Cornish-born artist in the Newlyn art colony which flourished from 1880 to 1930. Kenneth McConkey sets Harvey in the context of the art movements of the time, and shows how his early 'genre' paintings of rustic and marine life, so characteristic of the early Newlyn artists, gradually gave way to a more sophisticated subject matter - Harvey was noted for his sumptuous interiors - and a flatter and more decorative style of painting. His early work could be compared with that of Stanhope Forbes, while his later paintings show clear affinities with those of fellow painters such as Laura Knight and Dod Procter. The book includes a 'life' of the artist and catalog raisonne of more than 600 paintings. There are 110 illustrations of Harvey's favoured subjects: the Cornish at work, children at play, and intimate interior scenes and conversation pieces.

The supporting information includes exhibiting records, collections in which the work may be viewed today and bibliographic sources. The artist profiles are supplemented by essays and a rich variety of contemporaneous source material from the Newlyn colony. Topics covered include photography as art, the artists' schools and classes, with full lists of those artists who attended the Forbes' school, and the Arts and Crafts movement in West Cornwall, including the Newlyn copper industry. This title will become the major source book for Newlyn artists of this period. Interest in the artists of Cornwall currently is at a record high. It is published to coincide with a major exhibition at Penlee House Gallery, Penzance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laura Knight (1877-1970) was one of the most distinguished women artists of the early 20th century with an international reputation. This much-anticipated biography appears at a time of renewed interest in Dame Laura's extensive repertoire. Laura Knight: A Life probes beneath the myths and fictions that have and continue to be woven around the artist. This highly readable and objective biography covers her early years in Nottingham; relationship with her husband Harold; life in the artists colonies of Staithes on the North Yorkshire coast, Laren in Holland and Newlyn in Cornwall; Laura's subsequent immersion in the worlds of the ballet, the circus, the theatre and her travels in Europe and America; her work as a designer of theatrical costume, posters and ceramics; and her role as Official War Artist during World War 11 and recorder of the Nuremberg Trials in 1945-46. The author does more than merely draw the solid lines of Dame Laura's professional and public identity for the reader, she fills in the background, expresses the light and colour of Laura Knight's vibrant personality and, by also exploring the darker shades of her character, gives this portrait of the artist depth and perspective. If you read just one biography of Laura Knight it should be this one.

Book excerpt: "Thomas Cooper Gotch, born in Kettering in 1854, spent most of his painting life in Newlyn, with spells in the Home Counties. He travelled widely on the continent - living in France and visiting Italy and Skagen, Denmark - and collections of his work in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa bear witness to his strong links with the Commonwealth countries." "Gotch and his painter wife Caroline were popular members of the Newlyn 'art colony', active in the artists' theatricals and social gatherings. Gotch painted few Newlyn paintings of distinction - his imagination soared far beyond the recording of everyday life - but one of his most notable en plein air paintings, Mental Arithmetic, predated Stanhope Forbes's iconic Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach, and was one of the first 'Newlyn School' paintings to be acquired by a public collection." "Pamela Lomax's biography is the first full-length study of a remarkable painter of great vision who, despite his many friendships and art-world affiliations, was far and away the most individualistic of the Newlyn artists. He was a founder member of the New English Art Club, set up by French-trained artists to challenge the conservatism of the Royal Academy. From some time he greatly admired and supported James McNeill Whistler, but when divisions occurred in the NEAC, he favoured Newlyn realism to the impressionism of the London-based members."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
