Book excerpt: This book introduces the reliability modelling and optimization of warm standby systems. Warm standby is an attractive redundancy technique, as it consumes less energy than hot standby and switches into the active state faster than cold standby. Since a warm standby component experiences different failure rates in the standby state and active state, the reliability evaluation is challenging and the existing works are only restricted to very special cases. By adapting the decision diagrams, this book proposes the methodology to evaluate the reliability of different types of warm standby systems and studies the reliability optimization. Compared with existing works, the proposed methods allow the system to have an arbitrary number of components and allow the failure time distribution of components to observe arbitrary distributions. From this book, the readers can not only learn how to evaluate and optimize the reliability of warm standby systems but also use the methods to study the reliability of other complex systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In deep-submicron processes a significant portion of the power budget is lost in standby power due to increasing leakage effects. For systems that have long idle times punctuated by bursts of activity, such as PDAs, cell-phones, and wireless sensor networks nodes, this standby power consumption reduces the effectiveness of duty-cycling. This work surveys a number of subthreshold leakage reduction techniques and identifies supply rail gating "MTCMOS" as the most promising. MTCMOS is a dynamic technique that has two distinct modes: an active processing mode and a lower power sleep mode. The smallest area implementations of MTCMOS have the side-effect of losing the state of the system when in sleep mode. This complicates the resumption of the active mode, because traditional designs are intolerent to the loss of state. This work presents a general framework to reduce the state maintenence requirements during sleep mode without losing information required to resume the active mode. The framework is applied to finite state machines and microprocessors, since these are commonly used in system design. Partitioning the system into subsystems with individually controlled supply rails "termed power domains" allows fine-grain control of the power mode for portions of the chip. Each power domain must be dynamically put in the appropriate power mode to ensure correct system operation while minimizing power consumption. This control logic collectively forms the core of a power manager. Most power manager implementation approaches are largely ad-hoc and custom designed for each application. This work presents a structured methodology and architecture for the implementation and control of power domains to form a power managed system. Approaches to the partitioning and implementation of individual power domains are explored. The functional requirements for the power manager

If you are reading this, you are probably one of the several veterans who are struggling with the Veterans Administration, an organization that moves about as fast as pond water. Lucky for you, you've made the right decision by picking up my Veterans Disability book, which means you will be squared away in no time. You've served your country, but now your service-connected injury or illness has made it difficult for you to transition to civilian life. Unfortunately, applying for these benefits and navigating the system on your own could make your claim dead on arrival (DOA), and a weak or incomplete claim could languish for a long period of time before ultimately being denied, leaving you feeling let down by the country you have served. As a veteran myself, and a squared away attorney who has helped hundreds of veterans with their disability claims, I know firsthand just how drawn out the process can be. This book will help you understand the basics of veteran disability claims, as well as offer some tips and helpful suggestions. The better you understand the system, the quicker you can receive the benefits you deserve. Thank you for your interest in my book,

Graham is Molly and Beth's favourite uncle, so they really want to help him fix the past – and since the girls know of a mysterious door that can take them back in time, maybe they can! But how can they find who they're looking for without apps or social media? And what will the girls make of the 60s, where the hairstyles are wild, the slang is weird and no one's heard of ciabatta? And can they help Graham fix a friendship that was destroyed back in 1960? The girls soon discover that fun with friends is just the same whatever time you live in and that real friendship lasts forever – even when you're apart. This is an exciting story about time-travel, family, friendship and love.

The global economy, led by the Asia Pacific region, has undergone immense change and growth. Have the existing institutions and arrangements been able to keep pace with those changes in the global economy? International Institutions and Asian Development tackles these questions and is an essential book for the assessment of regional and international institutions, as well as policy prescriptions for reforming them to ensure they deliver on sustainable, peaceful growth and development in the region. Drawing from papers presented to the 32nd Pacific Trade and Development conference in Hanoi in 2007, the contributions by distinguished authors add to the understanding of the purpose, evolution, relevance and gaps in regional and global institutions and their arrangements. Book excerpt: Instrumentation, Control and Automation of Water and Wastewater Treatment and Transport Systems 1993 comprises a selection of manuscripts on the development of control strategies and their applications and on the status and future directions of Instrumentation, Control, and Automation (ICA) in the water and wastewater industry. The book starts by providing an overview of the status, the constraints and the future prospects for ICA in water and wastewater treatment and transport based on the survey responses of experts from 16 different countries. The text continues by presenting the need for dynamic modeling and simulation software to assist operations staff in developing effective instrumentation control strategies and to provide a training environment for the evaluation of such strategies. The book also covers the critical variables in system success; the use of an enterprise-wide computing that emphasizes the importance of strategic planning, performance measures, and human factors associated with the suggested implementation of applied technology; and the use of part-time unmanned operation at a large wastewater treatment plant. A functional approach based on the utility’s water and wastewater functional requirements; the collection system monitoring and control; water distribution and control systems; dynamic modeling and simulation; and process control strategy and development are also considered. This book will be beneficial to biochemists, wastewater technologists, and public health authorities.

Book excerpt: Part memoir, part testimonial, and part life guide, Stand by Your Truth mixes Rickey Smiley’s down-home humor with the values he learned from being raised by three generations of elders, steeped in the Baptist church, and mentored by some of the most celebrated comics in the entertainment industry today. “I’m very passionate about everything that I do and I don’t play any games. I just keep it honest. I don’t put on airs. That’s the only way you can be. If you tell one lie, you’ve got to tell another lie. I’m cool with who I am. What you see is what you get.” Stand-up comic. Single dad. Radio personality. TV star. Prankster. Producer. Community activist. Man of faith. Visit a church, comedy club, college campus, or barber shop, and you’ll find few people who aren’t familiar with, or fans of, Rickey Smiley. At least four million listeners in more than seventy markets tune in every weekday morning to hear him banter with his radio show crew, hilariously prank call an unsuspecting listener, and perform skits featuring his one-man cast of characters, including “Lil Darryl,” “Beauford,” and “Joe Willie.” But in between the rapid-fire jokes and celebrity dish are flashes of how Rickey views the world, from the challenges of raising children, to the importance of education, to the need to always stand by your own truth. After more than two decades in the spotlight, Rickey is finally ready to delve more deeply into the opinions he voices on the air, riffing on those issues that his listeners, viewers, and fans find most important. This collection of personal and powerful essays will speak to readers from all walks of life, and is sure to inspire you to Stand by Your Truth.
